To not boil another egg?

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 08:59

DC2 is 7 and going through both a growth spurt and a very fussy stage.

DC was offered poached or scrambled egg for breakfast. ( which I can reliably make) but I was persuaded to do boiled instead. Then I made it a bit runny… and had the audacity to serve with soldiers made of GRANARY bread! ‘It has bits in it’

DC refused to eat it and wanted something else. I asked DC to eat what I had made… they have left breakfast with nothing and are being extremely grumpy.

I have declined to make another egg… AIBU to think when they are properly hungry they will eat what is on offer…

photo attached of the offending plate…(DC insisted that I take the boiled egg out of the shell - but now doesn’t want it!

The level of compression here is shocking.

Op boiled the egg in the shell. The DC then announced that they wanted the shell removed. OP did this but as the egg was underdone it turned into a splodgy mess. To try and cook the underdone egg which was now no longer egg shaped she put it in the microwave. This caused the egg to bubble slightly.

yeah, she messed up and I wouldn't eat a reheated microwaved egg when I wanted a boiled egg she doesn't know how to cook eggs well.

I always take boiled eggs out of the shell and they stay the same shape, that's sort of the whole point of a boiled egg???

They look like this when peeled.

That’s a hard boiled egg not a boiled egg

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 03/08/2023 10:48

The bread looks fine to me. I wouldn't eat the egg but then I refuse to eat anything remotely snotty looking!

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 10:49

@ScribblingPixie where did you get this from?

where did I say dry bread with no butter. Bread was fresh loaf yesterday. Buttered ( well non dairy spread - due to allergies) apologies if it is not slathered on thick enough for the photos!

@PriamFarrl thank you for the clarity - and an accurate synopsis of the cooking method.

It's The Law that toast soldiers for dippy eggs must be made with thick sliced white bread, so YABU!

ActDottie · 03/08/2023 10:48

A hard boiled egg is a boiled egg Confused
Admittedly not one you can dip soldiers into (that would be soft boiled), but it is a boiled egg.

Boomboom22 · 03/08/2023 10:52

That is an abomination. Forboilrd eggs you need to do from room temp and carefully lower into boiling but not roaring water then time carefully, add one to two mins if the egg is large.

Swoonworthy · 03/08/2023 10:52

DC2 is 7 and going through both a growth spurt and a very fussy stage.

It looks revolting. I wouldn’t call someone fussy for not wanting to eat a boiled egg that looked like that. 😬

NanFlanders · 03/08/2023 10:54

Haven't read the full thread, but, even though I had a big bowl of porridge with maple syrup, I really want a soft-boiled egg with wholemeal toast soliders with real butter and Marmite now.

discpain · 03/08/2023 10:54

I don't keep my eggs in the fridge, boil a pan of water until big bubbles, stir the water around, egg goes in gently, let it get going again for 10-20 seconds then put the timer on for 5 -6 mins depending on the size of the egg.
Like a pp I have an autistic child who would only eat egg and soldiers for breakfast for years, I've become rather skilled !!

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 10:55

@Swoonworthy the fussiness referred to the refusal to eat a poached or scrambled egg. And the refusal to eat the same bread he ate yesterday. Not the egg itself

Beelezebub · 03/08/2023 10:57

I wouldn’t eat that egg.

I would make another using the method I was comfortable with, and make it clear that it’s this new egg or nothing at all.

Alargeoneplease89 · 03/08/2023 10:59

Seriously made me laugh 😂definitely not a boiled egg but no way would I redo especially if they are going through a fussy stage because you just know it isn't going to be right even if Brooklyn Beckham had laid it himself and boiled it to perfection in his rectum😂

I’m not quite sure how it went so wrong either. I large egg, water at just below boiling point. Then simmered for 4 and a half minutes. Not sure why it turned out so undercooked. Was trying to not make it hard boiled.

I like doing poached as I can see when they are ready.

🤮You didn’t boil it for long enough. Who told you 4.5 mins for a large egg? And did it start at room temp, or do you keep your eggs in the fridge? Soft boiled eggs with runny yolks are yummy, but ones so softly “boiled” that some of the white is still runny and translucent are pretty gross, and if you then microwave the mess, it’s utterly vile. I would try it for 6 mins next time - better a bit overdone than practically raw - or for at least 5 mins. 4.5 mins is definitely too little time for anything pleasant-looking and tasting. Few people like semi-raw egg subsequently removed from its shell and microwaved to rubber.

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 03/08/2023 09:26

Are you the poster who boils steak?

WTF? Surely no-one is that daft. 😱🤣🤣

PinkIcedCream · 03/08/2023 11:09

OP I feel for you. My 14yr old won’t eat eggs full stop, whatever way they’re cooked.

This is especially annoying as we have fresh eggs daily from our own chickens.

I think when he’s older, he’ll regret that he missed all those years of lovely fresh organic eggs. 😂

Also, I tend to ‘boil’ mine in the air fryer now as there’s no water to pre boil or extra pans to wash. Soft boiled usually take around 8 mins in the air fryer depending on size. I don’t keep our eggs on the fridge either as they’re better being cooked from room temperature.

ScribblingPixie · 03/08/2023 11:12

Oh wait, what, it went in the microwave?😫I wonder how many of us were dubbed 'difficult' as children because we wouldn't eat failed meals?
Six minutes boiling for a large egg/properly toasted bread with a decent amount of butter (alternative if you have to)/salt on the plate.

JulieHoney · 03/08/2023 11:28

DarkForces · 03/08/2023 09:41

Please don't buy large eggs. They're so bad for chickens... I know that's not the point of the thread but poor chickens

Nonsense. It’s the breed and the age of the hen.

My elderly hens lay enormous eggs. The older the bird, the more likely to lay double yolkers. The only way to prevent laying large eggs would be to kill them.

Balloonhearts · 03/08/2023 11:30

Yeah no I wouldn't eat that either, I'd make them another one. The white shouldn't be runny, that alone would make me gag and I hate granary bread. Bread shouldn't have bits in.

Balloonhearts · 03/08/2023 11:33

That'll be why then. You don't simmer it, you boil it and timer doesn't start until it starts boiling.

SheRaaaaa · 03/08/2023 11:34

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 10:16

DC1 has appeared looked at the photo and asked if she can have ‘one like that please’ -apparently it looked really nice!

Yeah, right.

YABU expecting the poor kid to eat that shit, I don't blame them, it looks fucking disgusting. I wouldn't eat that either.

McPie · 03/08/2023 12:09

Cold water covering the eggs, pan on high heat, 10-11 mins for soft and 14-15 for hard boiled! Never fails and I eat boiled eggs every morning.

Willmafrockfit · 03/08/2023 12:15

Sahara123 · 03/08/2023 10:02

Oh thank goodness someone who actually read what OP did. Boiled egg, took off shell, too soft so put it in the microwave.
Eggsasperating ….

eggstrodinary

i am the queen on boiled eggs,
i need a particular saucepan. cold water, lid on
bring to the boil,
turn down, time for 3 and a half or 4 minutes, thereabouts, run under cold water, smash,
dip in your soldiers - white toast

Willmafrockfit · 03/08/2023 12:16

it is better to buy a box of mixed eggs

NewCracker · 03/08/2023 12:59

Maybe you DC just doesn't like egg.
