To not boil another egg?

DC2 is 7 and going through both a growth spurt and a very fussy stage.

DC was offered poached or scrambled egg for breakfast. ( which I can reliably make) but I was persuaded to do boiled instead. Then I made it a bit runny… and had the audacity to serve with soldiers made of GRANARY bread! ‘It has bits in it’

DC refused to eat it and wanted something else. I asked DC to eat what I had made… they have left breakfast with nothing and are being extremely grumpy.

I have declined to make another egg… AIBU to think when they are properly hungry they will eat what is on offer…

photo attached of the offending plate…(DC insisted that I take the boiled egg out of the shell - but now doesn’t want it!

I get fed up reading about fussy eaters. That breakfast is fine. I’d just say, ok go hungry but there is nothing else till lunchtime, otherwise you make a rod for your own back. And believe me, come adolescence he will be eating the whole contents of the egg box!

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 09:16

Sorry the soldiers are not toast. DC is adamant that they want bread not toast…

Sorry, but that looks like shit. Let your kid have something else

Yes I am not good at boiled eggs… hence offering other kinds.

Why not learn together and help teach the 7 year old how to make one? You can buy timers you put in the water which show you when the egg is ready.

LetsPutTheKettleOn · 03/08/2023 09:17

Did you boil the egg in water without the shell? That is not a boiled egg

ZeroFuchsGiven · 03/08/2023 09:17

That is not even close to being a boiled egg.

So you attempted to cook a boiled egg, undercooked it, and then put it in the microwave?! I love eggs but if I was expecting a boiled egg and soldiers and was served that I wouldn’t be happy either! I would make another one. Google how long it needs to be cooked for and set a timer to make sure you get it right. It’s really not difficult.

warblingwater · 03/08/2023 09:19

I'm just stunned you can POACH an egg but struggle to boil one?!

swimminginthesun · 03/08/2023 09:20

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 09:13

@YourNameGoesHere yes that is what a hard boiled egg is like out of the shell. DC wanted a soft boiled egg. (But not in a shell and not a poached egg…)
there is a reason I offered scrambled or poached!

A soft boiled egg still keeps its shape out of the shell. Only the yolk should be runny.

KrisAkabusi · 03/08/2023 09:20

There's a reason that the measure of a bad cook is "He couldn't even boil an egg!" I never thought that was actually possible until I saw your photo! 😄

Now's the opportunity to get your daughter and boil an egg together.

Bells3032 · 03/08/2023 09:21

that does not look like a boiled egg and why would you stick it in the microwave. for future buy one of these. shows you how cooked the egg is. And always cook from cold too: Egg Timers,Colour Changing Egg Timer,Reusable Safe Boiled Eggs Cooking Tool,Gift and Home Use : Amazon.co.uk: Home & Kitchen

As for if she's hungry she'll eat anything, no. even as an adult and i'm starving if it's something i don't like or doesn't look right i won't eat it. why would i expect a kid to? I wouldn't have made another egg but would have given her cereal or some fruit etc?

YourNameGoesHere · 03/08/2023 09:08

I always take boiled eggs out of the shell and they stay the same shape, that's sort of the whole point of a boiled egg???

They look like this when peeled.

That's a hard boiled egg.

You need a soft boiled egg, cooked white, runny yolk, to dip toast in.

iamboudicca · 03/08/2023 09:22

I’m not quite sure how it went so wrong either. I large egg, water at just below boiling point. Then simmered for 4 and a half minutes. Not sure why it turned out so undercooked. Was trying to not make it hard boiled.

I like doing poached as I can see when they are ready.

Untoasted soldiers are too floppy - not fit for purpose!

VeridicalVagabond · 03/08/2023 09:22

If it's come out of the shell looking like that it's undercooked, even a soft boiled egg would hold its shape and not collapse into a jelloid pile.

Sorry OP, I'm the opposite of a picky eater and I'd probably turn my nose up at that too. Annoying of your child to ask for something and then not eat it but you didn't exactly produce what was asked for so... Maybe take it as an opportunity to practice your boiled eggs and have another go? Doesn't seem worth having a hungry grumpy child over this.

😂

I'm sorry OP, I don't know what you have done to that egg but it isn't boiled. Also as PP said how can someone poach an egg but not be able to boil one 🙈

CFornot · 03/08/2023 09:22

One egg and one slice of toast for a 7 year old who is going through a growth spurt? What do they normally eat when not extra hungry?

Annaishere · 03/08/2023 09:23

YourNameGoesHere · 03/08/2023 09:17

That could be the plot for a children’s story. ‘Mum can’t boil eggs’

SocksAndTheCity · 03/08/2023 09:24

Four and a half minutes' boiling is not long enough for a large egg, especially if it's very fresh. Microwaving it is just beyond the pale 😂

ZeroFuchsGiven · 03/08/2023 09:25

I keep coming back to this thread just to look at the egg, even with your explanation I can not see in any possible way how a boiled egg could end up looking like that. To my mind it is scientifically impossible

WhamBamThankU · 03/08/2023 09:25

Sorry but it doesn't look appetising and as an adult I probably wouldn't eat that either.

Clymene · 03/08/2023 09:26

Boiled eggs don't have bubbles in the white. That egg was cooked out of its shell.

If you don't know how to boil an egg, Delia has a very good book which teaches the basics. It's called How to Cook

MavisChunch29 · 03/08/2023 09:26

Boil the kettle, fill pan with boiling water, bring back to the boil, place egg in using a slotted spoon or similar, when it is bubbling steadily again you want to time 4 minutes (about) for a soft boiled egg, up to six minutes if it's a large egg, 8-10 for hard boiled. If you need to get it out of the shell quickly, drain the pan and run lots of cold water on the eggs then peel.

Some eggs do crack a bit this way but IMO it's much more reliable than the "put them in cold water and bring to the boil" method. Eggs are something you do need to time fairly accurately.

Multipleexclamationmarks · 03/08/2023 09:26

Yea, I wouldn't eat that either.
