To not boil another egg?

DC2 is 7 and going through both a growth spurt and a very fussy stage.

DC was offered poached or scrambled egg for breakfast. ( which I can reliably make) but I was persuaded to do boiled instead. Then I made it a bit runny… and had the audacity to serve with soldiers made of GRANARY bread! ‘It has bits in it’

DC refused to eat it and wanted something else. I asked DC to eat what I had made… they have left breakfast with nothing and are being extremely grumpy.

I have declined to make another egg… AIBU to think when they are properly hungry they will eat what is on offer…

photo attached of the offending plate…(DC insisted that I take the boiled egg out of the shell - but now doesn’t want it!

I love eggs and soldiers but that offering doesn’t look nice at all. I sometimes take the egg out of the shell when yolk is still a bit runny but it doesn’t look like that!!
id have made a new egg and toasted the bread more.

I keep having to repeat myself because clearly people are still posting who haven’t read the whole thread.

the egg was not raw when served. (Although I used proper vaccinated eggs bought in 2023 not 1986 Eggwina) It had been in the microwave for just long enough to firm it up (still not rubbery - I sometimes cook eggs in the microwave and they are fine)

If you are worried about salmonella then you shouldn’t be eating a dippy egg at all. To remove any risk it should be hard boiled through (which I know from past experience DC doesn’t like - hence aiming for a runnier egg.)

The child had breakfast- just not the egg in the way they wanted - for full back story I had already offered him mine… a poached egg - perfectly cooked when he came to the table. He declined and insisted on the now famous boiled egg. I had a go. I failed. I tried to recover the mistake. Yes I can boil an egg but at 7.30 half asleep I messed it up on this occasion.

It wasn’t disgusting. I can say that for certain as I ate the bloody thing rather than waste it. Was a cross between a poached and a coddled egg.

🤣Yes, I’m sure it was safe to eat, but you didn’t even remotely give him what he asked for, nor does the photo make it look palatable. If he’s not going to eat your poached egg, then of course he won’t eat something that looks like someone started to eat and then puked back out again.

Obviously it is fair to refuse to cook another egg if you have already produced the egg requested, but it’s a bit mean to ruin something and then tell someone they have to eat it anyway.

Walkaround · 06/08/2023 10:04

The egg in the picture looks like it was safely solidified in the microwave - no salmonella left there!

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/08/2023 10:10

Mmmm....solidified.

Appetising.

It was a boiled egg before DC insisted I take it out of the shell!

But you said this! So you were going to serve him a raw egg. And then it took you an age to admit you realised it was raw when you dug it out the shell and nuked it in the microwave Grin

I've been reading your posts from the beginning

Walkaround · 06/08/2023 10:14

And there is less risk of salmonella if the white, at least, is solid - the bacteria may not yet have breached the yolk membrane if it’s a fresh egg… runny yolk and white on the other hand is 🤮. Slimy, ugly, yucky. I feel my inner child coming to the fore on this one 😂.

OnionBhajis · 06/08/2023 10:16

Yes reading since the beginning amd all your justifications.

I think you have difficulties seeing things from others point of view. Most people here have said they would find it unappetising and a bit gross. Your child obviously was disappointed it wasn't a boiled egg but a frankenegg.

Yet you keep digging in because you'd eat it. Can you see people are different. Or admit maybe you were wrong?

iamboudicca · 06/08/2023 10:26

I keep coming back because posters keep making stuff up. At no point did I expect the child to eat the raw egg. I did think it was ok once it had been cooked in the microwave.

You were wrong. Your child and most of the thread agree.

iamboudicca · 06/08/2023 10:28

Perhaps my posts were less linear at the start. But I was expressing a bit of silly story - not a safeguarding report!

Sorry but I am with your child.

The egg should be in an eggcup - if it is and its too runny you can put the top back on for a couple of mins.

Also those are not soldiers, they need to be toasted, and buttered.

I don't think you were putting your child at risk! Just you posted a photo of what you were adamant was a boiled egg which had been scooped out the shell when it clearly wasn't!

Nellynoowhoareyou · 06/08/2023 11:41

Guys, salmonella is not even a risk in the U.K. anymore.

Don’t let the goady fuckers win, OP! 😁

Dontworkmondays · 06/08/2023 12:25

I wouldn’t eat that.

Youaretoonoisy · 06/08/2023 12:48

Why can't you just admit that maybe you got it wrong and were being unfair to your child. Your child wanted a boiled egg which really isn't a big ask.

You said yourself in your op that you can't do boiled eggs, you didn't cook it for long enough. Most people have said it looked horrid and nothing like a boiled egg.

No one is saying that they are perfect, we all mess up a meal sometimes, but to expect a child to eat it rather than just doing them another one us very unkind.

Wenfy · 06/08/2023 17:01

I don’t believe you when you say you can poach & scramble when you made such a hash of a boiled egg lol. No wonder he didn’t want your ‘specialities’ when you can’t get the basics right

Did that make you feel good?

OnionBhajis · 06/08/2023 17:48

Just accept it wasnt great and have a go. Experiment a bit with eggs taken out at different times. Follow Delia etc...

Then you will be able to do a boiled egg rather than coming up with gloom that needs microwaving. It's a bit passive not to sort it and learn!

Nellynoowhoareyou · 06/08/2023 19:43

@Walkaround , surely you can see that article is 3 years old?

Nellynoowhoareyou · 06/08/2023 19:44

Almost 4!

Nellynoowhoareyou · 06/08/2023 19:48

Oh 😳 has the guidance actually changed back again already? Actually wouldn’t surprise me thanks to the Brexit gift that keeps on giving.

sashh · 07/08/2023 07:58

For anyone wanting to boil eggs perfect for soldiers, put the egg in a pan with cold water to cover, bring to the boil.To check if the egg is cooked take it out of the pan and look at the shell.

If the shell is wet then the egg isn't cooked, put it back. When you take the egg out if a patch of shell dries emmediately then it is cooked.

I often have eggs boiled for seven minutes. (The yolk is soft but not runny - delicious but not for dipping.) The egg isn’t immediately dry when I take them out of the water. I don’t understand how you would get dippy eggs this way…
