So FUCKING sick of printers

Why the fuck do they never work? I'm so sick of this shit. We can find a covid vaccine but nobody has been able to create a printer that actually, you know, fucking works?

I'm especially really sick to the bloody back teeth of "HP Smart". Why does this app exist and why does it force me to sign in when I just qant to do some basic bitch task like photocopy something. And now my printer isn't working again so clearly not that Smart are you?

Just seriously sick of printers, every time there's some "Issue", companies need to get their shit together. Latest one has WiFi apparently, but does it work? No, it fucking doesn't. That's fine I guess I'll just a cable like its the 80s

Why are you still using a printer, are you MN from the 90s?

Cheesusisgrate · 29/07/2023 15:50

HP can smell your fear and stress. They feed on it.

I got brother laser, non wireless (!) and all my problems disappeared.

CatsLikeBoxes · 29/07/2023 15:55

I feel your pain! I dread having to print something out - my printer's trick is to pretend the paper has run out... it will whirr away busily making out it is doing its job, then stop, and state that it has no paper. Sometimes it sadistically forces me to reload the paper 3 or 4 times before deciding to cooperate

Ohmylovejune · 29/07/2023 15:56

Haha I call my printer my stroppy teenager!

But having said that, it's really not too bad until it gets a paper jam.

It's a Brother MFC something and came from my previous job. We dug it out of the spare stationary cupboard and installed at home for working during lockdown. I set up the brother app on my phone and eventually managed to get it to WiFi link. Once that was done - which wasn't easy - it's been a pretty good printer. It only drives me mad when the paper jams because its soo heavy and takes ages to get the stuck paper removed.

In the end when I left the job I offered to buy it from them for a reasonable sum, simply so they would say yes! I couldn't be bothered to waste hours taking it back, wasting the spares I had in stock and buying/resetting up a new one.

SmartHome · 29/07/2023 15:56

I use a printer a lot in my home office, mainly for kids homework tasks which are still extraordinarily paper based, and also for the endless consent forms you have to print out, sign and scan (too tight to pay for the software that lets you sign online and theres no free ones as far as I am aware?). Also for boarding passes etc. I find it too stressful hoping battery/signal will last to passport control.

I agree with you though, they are reamarkable shit and badly designed despite being around for decades. I've had 3 or 4 from different manufacturers over the years. My top tip is that if it is a WiFi printer, it WILL NOT work consistently or reliably just over WiFi, even if the manufacturers claim it will. You need a signal booster or power plug WiFi adapters to have any hope. My current office printer works reasonably ok over WiFi powerline adapters down to the router. I still have to reset it every couple of weeks.

Couldyounot · 29/07/2023 15:56

I hear you. Sweet Jesus Lord, I hear you

mobear · 29/07/2023 15:56

I also recently switched from an HP to a Brother Laser (but wireless) and I love it. So simple and quick. It doesn’t photocopy though. Most places accept photos of documents taken on your phone.

Teapleasebobb · 29/07/2023 15:57

Ah I know the feeling op, we were given a printer recently and it took an age to set up, it really should not take that long! Dd insisted on having her ticket printed for a festival she went to, no idea why!!

I quite often have to print things for a children's group that I volunteer for, thought I'd try Rymans to get it printed instead of faffing with our printer, but they wanted £3 before I even printed out the pages, shocking!!

Madmother63 · 29/07/2023 15:58

I email myself at work and print it at work! I don't own a printer

RightOnTheEdge · 29/07/2023 15:58

I've had my printer a while and sometimes I think I've finally worked the thing out, but then I'll do it exactly the same way next time and it won't work 😠

Now it's decided it won't connect to the WiFi no matter what I try, even though its always connected with no problem before 😡

TheBitterBoy · 29/07/2023 16:01

We got rid of our HP years ago, dreadful overpriced rubbish. We had a Canon for a few years which was okay, mostly worked but tricky to print from my phone, and died completely with no warning. Now we have an Epson, which is brilliant. WiFi works every time, the ink is cheaper than all the others and prints from my phone first time every time. I love it.

SmartHome · 29/07/2023 16:05

My reasonably well behaved current one is also a wireless Epson. It's not bad tbh and I really like the refillable ink system, way cheaper and they last ages.

It still knows when I'm in a huge hurry to print something though and will go into an inexplicable 'error.status' if it knows I have no spare time to turn it off, go downstairs, reset the plug and reboot my laptop so that it will acknowledge the mystery error has gone. I'd say laptops give printers a run for their money tbh.

CastaniaBlush · 29/07/2023 16:05

I completely empathise. To my shame I have replaced a few.

Our latest one just doesn't want to comply. Decided to stop printing on a whim.

We have done everything according to the manual yet it wont print.

In 2023 I am so frustrated that these bloody things are so difficult to use.

SmartHome · 29/07/2023 16:08

Remember to update the firmware via one of the confusing programs or apps that you install with it. Sometimes that helps. And reset the WiFi router, printer and laptop at the same time. And go into the print q and clear any stuck jobs in error status. If it still won't print, take it to the recycling centre. We have a local computer firm that picks up the naughty ones from there an daprts then out and gives to local schools etc.

OddBoots · 29/07/2023 16:12

I would have agreed with you until we bought a Brother HL-3150CDW Colour Laser Printer in 2014 and while it was a relatively expensive outlay at the time (£140) it takes compatibles so is chap to run and has been solidly reliable since.

MyrtleSmurf · 29/07/2023 16:19

I hate HP Smart. Only had my printer about 18 months and I am increasingly tempted to replace it.

Thereshegoesagain · 29/07/2023 16:19

My HP printer works absolutely fine...
... unless you really, very, extremely urgently need to print something, then it decides to hide from your ipad/computer.
'hp printer not found'

" it's fucking here!!! I'm standing right beside you, you bastard"

Why it isn't smashed into a million pieces just below the office window is testament to my chilled out, happy go lucky nature...
But one fucking day....

CurlewKate · 29/07/2023 16:24

My ds had to go to a party dressed in something beginning with P. He drew a printer on a t shirt and said he was totally unreliable, randomly screwed up routine tasks and sucked the life out of people. (He is none of those things!)

Medsy · 29/07/2023 16:24

Thanks guys I am calming down a bit realising this is a problem everyone has! The thing that pisses me off the most is HP Smart. I hate that I have to log into this shitty app.
Just checked to see if I can connect it with a USB and of course, of COURSE I fucjing can't, it has to be one of those special square cables

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 29/07/2023 16:27

We have that Brother laser printer. It never breaks down.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 29/07/2023 16:29

I gave up on printers, they never work, such a waste of money.

Testina · 29/07/2023 16:30

Preach.

HP 🤬

Paper jams a lot.
Doesn't like to print in colour.
Simply does not print. Then, maybe 30 mins later makes the person in the room jump when it suddenly starts spewing out the 3 attempted. Not exaggerating that 30 mins.
Can’t find the printer.
Disconnects from wifi all the fucking time, meaning every reconnection require me to print the sodding calibration page - I swear I’ve printed that more than anything I’ve actually intentionally printed, added together.
I have NO problems with tech in general, it’s not me.

Medsy · 29/07/2023 16:32

Which is it you useless piece of shit?

So FUCKING sick of printers

I didn't realise with the deal you get for ink cartridge replacements that if you cancelled the subscriber (which I did as I don't use it enough) that the current ink I have stops working. Even it's more or less full. Furious and refuse to spend £20 odd on a new one to print one page of something. I have a printer place round the corner that prints things for 15p so my printer is currently collecting dust.
