Sick of being lectured about the climate crisis

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:12

I try my best to leave as little carbon footprint as possible.
Married with no kids and annual dual fuel bills are under£700
1 small car, holiday overseas once every 5 years.
So why do those wealthy families with 3,4, 5 plus kids who drive SUV tanks and holiday every year multiple times.,who consume £300 plus in energy bills monthly, have the audacity and blatant cheek to lecture others on the climate crisis.

It's like they have only just twigged their excessive greed and consumption just might now mean your kids futures are ruined.
It's making me so angry.

I can name at least three influencers I stopped following because they’re were all about the environment but went on multiple unnecessary flights each year.

Bloody David Attenborough winds me up. Who has got a bigger carbon footprint than him? He has been everywhere and seen everything but lectures the general public about climate change?? Leonardo DiCaprio- another fucking hypocrite. The poorest people have the smallest carbon footprint.

Poor people tend to have a lot of pets and kids

I don't understand how your dual fuel is £700 a YEAR Confused

Our 2 bedroom flat is £430 a MONTH - it's mostly electricity, we hardly ever have the heating on

My 3 bedroom house dual fuel bill is £80 a month. I do live alone though.

Missingmyusername · 28/07/2023 19:49

Yeah- bit like the vegan bashing posts on here.

ā€œeating over processed vegan foodā€šŸ™„meat can be over processed too and often is!

ā€œPoor people have more kids and petsā€.

And yes OP, I think people are talking about it now because it’s evident and people are dying, fires are raging. It’s headline news! People talk about the news and what’s happening.

So if the earth was getting warmer then how could new ice form over this to bury it?

??

Where did you read that ice had formed over him? I'd assumed he would have fallen down a crevasse

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 20:41

@Missingmyusername people can talk about it all they want but if they have kids and live a middle class lifestyle with numorous overseas holidays they just make themselves look like the hypocritical fuckwits they are.

@kitsuneghost poor people have more kids and pets? Is that a fact or an observation your part?

Drenchend · 28/07/2023 20:55

One has broken free in our office.
The last one was an absolute harridan over the bin and humiliated the loveliest lady over what she accidentally put in the wrong one.
Yet when i asked her if she was part of the local movement's to stop a development on green belt she blushed and it slipped out later her dh was working on green home's on it.

Goodness knows what she's got in her "Green closest"

People with kids (!) should not and have no place on lecturing about climate change.
They are the worst criminal themselves.

'criminals'?? even with 2 DC I would hazard a guess my family has a greater impact on reducing carbon emissions, than many seen as my DH is an Architect that designs sustainable large buildings. You know things that actually make some difference (huge difference) rather than just peddling out this line again and again!

SingingNettles · 28/07/2023 21:02

Honestly I’m just sick to death of climate change deniers and inactive governments.

Luckily, deniers (while loud) are a relatively small segment of the population in the UK at least but I fear that may change if climate change gets successfully turned into a ā€˜culture war’ issue. You’re already starting to see people attribute it to ā€˜the woke agenda’. šŸ™„

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 21:39

@SingingNettles can you show me where I have once illustrated I'm a climate change denier? I'm well aware it's happening but I refuse to do amymore to reduce my already miniscule carbon footprint. I don't have kids and if we are all dead in 60years how will that impact me.... It won't unless I live to 105.

I wasn’t referring to you, rather other comments on this thread and similar recent ones.

I’m in a similar boat to you (childless and won’t see the worst of climate change, so my personal stakes are low) but I imagine we’d hear a lot less about it if governments took needed action and certain huge multinational industries stopped pumping out misinformation.

eurochick · 28/07/2023 21:46

The poster with the £430 a month fuel bill should check to see if any of her neighbours are running a cannabis farm from her supply. That's an extraordinary amount.

Outliers · 28/07/2023 22:00

Limousine liberals.

MargaretThursday · 28/07/2023 22:07

I think one of the things is that people see the bit they are consciously doing as a sacrifice, but the bits they aren't doing they don't notice, or think are too small to matter.

I remember as a young mothers' group (we all had at least 2 dc) someone offered to come and talk to us about "little things we all could easily do." It kind of fell apart at the point when they said "don't use the tumble drier. What I do is hang it up in the spare room and close the door and then it doesn't bother anyone."
When someone suggested that she (dc had left home and was just her and her husband) could downsize and reduce the energy she was using on her 5 bed house, she said that was insignificant-and anyway she was saving energy because this winter they weren't leaving the conservatory door open all the time so the dog could go in and out when it wanted...
I think most people walked out at this point.

AvengedQuince · 28/07/2023 22:07

YANBU. Change should start at the top. Introduce measures to bring everyone down to x amount of carbon, then lower x. No paying for environmental offsets elsewhere or paying the poor to buy yourself a bigger allowance.

If this government cared they would have given a bigger £ amount towards household energy bills plus extra for elderly people or those with disabilities who need to use more energy. Instead they subsidised everyone by capping the unit prices so higher users got more than lower users.

Mine is £850 a year for a semi detached house, so £700 doesn't seem crazy low, though the lower you go the harder it is to reduce bills because of the sky high standing charges.

LaurieFairyCake · 28/07/2023 22:16

Yes my standing charges are about Ā£400 a year I think šŸ¤”

Everyone should be doing everything possible to stop climate change including communicating the risks to others. Interpreting that as 'lecturing' sounds childish and defensive. It's not about you as an individual, it's the future.

This!

Anyone who has any concerns about anything that is in the public interest, like climate change or public health is accused of lecturing. It's so irritating. We should be concerned about things that will ultimately affect us all.

It was with the headline that the ice was melting which I interpreted as new ice or snow had formed.

Mine are 80p a day or Ā£292 a year, more than a third of my bill! It doesn't offer much incentive to cut usage.. šŸ¤”

Ah, Communism alive and well, just like it was during covid.

Lazyusername · 28/07/2023 22:31

@Soulesssummer I am 100% in agreement with you on this. There was one of these middle class numpties on here the other night who I took to task. Saying they "despaired" of people not halving their consumption of resources but when pressed admitted they still flew abroad on holiday because their husband apparently made them. šŸ˜† Like they were not capable of saying no. They also drove a car, ate meat and lived in a large house. Yet apparently they were climate activist of the year and someone who had to drive a petrol van to work as a tradesperson was evil. šŸ˜‚
I am all for making the world a cleaner and less polluted place but as the top 1% have more wealth than the bottom 50% combined, let's address inequality first shall we? Let's ban private jets, superyachts, private heated swimming pools and second homes. This won't cause people to be cold, hungry or trapped in their homes as they are unable to get about without a car. I've asked before for the people who disagree with this idea to get back and tell me why but have had no reply so far.
The earth's resources are finite so instead of taking everything from the poor let's level things out so nobody is consuming obscene amounts. It's just common sense. If the elite are not going to change their ways, why on earth should working class people go without heat or a cooked meal? I am willing to stand up and do what it takes to stop this happening.
