Sick of being lectured about the climate crisis

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:12

I try my best to leave as little carbon footprint as possible.
Married with no kids and annual dual fuel bills are under£700
1 small car, holiday overseas once every 5 years.
So why do those wealthy families with 3,4, 5 plus kids who drive SUV tanks and holiday every year multiple times.,who consume £300 plus in energy bills monthly, have the audacity and blatant cheek to lecture others on the climate crisis.

It's like they have only just twigged their excessive greed and consumption just might now mean your kids futures are ruined.
It's making me so angry.

We should all be trying to do our bit for climate change, but let's at least acknowledge that the hyper focus on individual responsibility is largely because it takes the pressure off industry to make changes.

What would make more difference- everyone who cares recycling the plastic packaging their tomatoes come in, or tesco switching to cardboard only on tomatoes overnight? Convincing a whole street to go without their LED nightlight, or the local high street shops turning off their halogens overnight?

Hell, imagine the difference if it became legislation that supermarkets had to have doors on all refrigerators? They don't because they worry opening a door might interrupt the "impulse purchasing journey" I.e. impact on profits. And meanwhile the general public are being guilted about overfilling a kettle when boiling a cup of tea.

I agree. Only the other day someone on here was berating someone who was flying off for her first overseas holiday in 9 years.
I bet most of them harping on about carbon footprints are the worst culprits.

Quite possibly.

Although it's puzzling how some say your a hypocrite for eg using planes but then professing their care for the environment, but until better technology is available then people still need to use planes etc

How can most be made up if it was the main steam media narrative at the time.

Shall we pick some ?

What is the significance of ā€œPM says
50 days to save the planetā€ item in this list ? Why is it in the list and what do you think boomers people understand when they read that ?

I've lived through all of this ⬇

All of it.

Me too @EmilyBrontesGhost, me too! I didn’t expect to be here now to be honest, what with the hole in the Ozone, dodging AIDS, hiding under the stairs from the inevitable nuclear bomb, eating ā€˜Mad cow’ beef and salmonella eggs. Climate change was well down on my the list of worries.

don’t buy the plastic pack tomatoes, make them impossible for Tesco to sell. They do whatever we demand, use your consumer powers wisely !

Me, I've not a clue, it seems the public chase their tales as the media keeps them spinning with this scientist or that scientist etc

Hawkins0001 · 28/07/2023 22:47

Basically anyone that has a different perspective than the original mainstream narrative.

These same hysterical morally pure always end up with egg with on their face like they did after Covid. They were shrieking and screaming people to put masks on, calling for harder lockdowns, reporting their neighbours for the taking the second walk of the day.

And now you don’t hear a peep out of them because they very scientists who told us lockdowns saved grannies’ lives now say lockdowns were a mistake.

These morons never learn from history. Even as recent as 3 years ago.

But then that creates the story of the person who cried wolf. That's the pickle of it all.

The media hasn’t the first clue how science works.

That item in the list refers to Gordon Brown who was trying to get some consensus on government level climate action 50 days prior to a climate summit in Copenhagen.

In the context of this list though it is made to appear that the PM said a climate catastrophe would occur in 50 days which is a deliberate misrepresentation.

Ozone, AIDS, acid rain were all real issues and were solved by humans understanding the causes, doing the research and science and then making appropriate changes and mitigating the situation. Peak oil predictions were appropriate but as technology improved new wells were discovered / fracking was perfected we unlocked previously unobtainable oil reserves.

The boomer facebook list is deliberately misleading and is a prop to help people who for some insane reason do not accept the scientific consensus that AGW is real and dangerous to cope.

Weren’t you also told that you would die of Covid if you so much as considered stepping outside your house without a mask. Unfortunately some idiots fall for this nonsense every time.

LodiDodi · 28/07/2023 23:19

Generally, the ones being lectured are the mildest offenders in any case. See poor people being lectured about climate change, impoverished and uneducated white people being lectured about xenophobia, women being lectured about violence towards trans people when women are the least violent demographic, young people being lectured about the state of society when they've spent the least time in it, single mothers being lectured about, well, everything, etc etc etc. The most oppressed/ least powerful group are easiest to lecture, always. Because they don't have a voice to argue back.

Nobody was told they would die if they went outside during covid. Get a grip.

We were encouraged to change our behaviour so as not to spread an unknown virus. Later, scientists created vaccines which gave us the means to treat the situation.

Based on your analysis, does then that it follows the who issue of climate change will be solved by better tech rather than the public ?

Few really bad examples there.

There was massive change in manufacturing and behaviour around CFCs to protect the ozone layer. The awareness campaigns around AIDS and condom use etc. saved countless peoples lives - so actually both examples of science and public awareness campaigns that brought about positive change.

I don't need people continually 'communicating the risks of climate change' to me. I'm good, thanks. I understand. I get it. I've seen the David Attenborough programmes. I've read the articles. I do my bit. Running around screaming, 'WE'RE IN A CLIMATE EMERGENCY!!!!!' constantly just pisses me off.

I fucking know!!! I am aware! We're all aware! We don't need any more awareness (except the MN idiots who heat their houses to 25 degrees). We need governments and scientists to do something. We're all scratching about doing our little micro-eco-saves (beeswax wrappers for our sandwiches, swapping shower gel for soap bars, walking to the shops with our reusable bags) but what's needed is proper government action and big, significant scientific solutions.

So you are reducing people to nothing but passive consumers, can't possibly be an agent of change. Who do you think votes for the government. The fact is Tories inaction on climate change is going to cost them votes because it is important to many people. I'm unsure how anyone can peddle out the fantasy that their involvement is not needed until X, Y and Z have been achieved!

No salad here. Pick any of the items in the list and read about the issue.

There were lockdowns. Nobody said you would literally die if you go outside, what a reductive and deliberately ignorant way to describe the pandemic.

Scientists: If current trends continue, and we don’t do ABC, then XYZ will happen.

ABC is implemented, in order to prevent XYZ

(Some) People: Scientists said XYZ would happen but it never did! Their prediction was wrong.

This is an excellent post and well articulated.

Fact is, the (so-called) "climate crisis" is for the middle classes, just like covid was, because they can afford it.

The less well off are simply struggling to make ends meet and feed their families, they just have no time for this nonsense.

Do you know what the word fact means?
