Sick of being lectured about the climate crisis

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 13:12

I try my best to leave as little carbon footprint as possible.
Married with no kids and annual dual fuel bills are under£700
1 small car, holiday overseas once every 5 years.
So why do those wealthy families with 3,4, 5 plus kids who drive SUV tanks and holiday every year multiple times.,who consume £300 plus in energy bills monthly, have the audacity and blatant cheek to lecture others on the climate crisis.

It's like they have only just twigged their excessive greed and consumption just might now mean your kids futures are ruined.
It's making me so angry.

There’s a woman at my work with 5 kids and a diesel van, they go to Disney every year and kids are spoiled rotten with plastic tat toys.

She told me a while back that my being vegetarian wasn’t enough and I should be plant based. She said not enough people were taking the climate crisis seriously and she was scared for her kids’ future.

I have no kids, don’t drive, don’t eat meat, don’t fly, and buy second hand where I can. To say I was flabbergasted was an understatement.

YANBU. People aren’t wrong to be sounding the alarm, but some do it in the most mindboggling hypocritical ways.

SnowyPetals · 28/07/2023 14:35

I think a prevalent feature of the climate debate is hypocrisy and passing the buck, because unfortunately there is no single solution to it. It involves a lot of unpalatable changes that people don't want to make on a personal level. Pretty much everyone could do better, and we all have limits to what we're prepared to do.

CurlewKate · 28/07/2023 14:40

If only people had listened to the lectures we may not have a crisis!

Swrigh1234 · 28/07/2023 14:40

The lecturers simply cannot answer the question about what is the practical point in people in this country sacrificing themselves over this climate zealotry. And it is zealotry. It has nothing to do with practical reality. This country produces less than 1% of global emissions. You driving less, or flying less or eating over processed vegan food is not going to make any difference at all. Not one bit.

But virtues must be signalled, right?

BlossomCloud · 28/07/2023 14:42

I'm assuming the people driving around in hulking grand SUVs and having multiple foreign holidays etc aren't the ones lecturing on here (or elsewhere) about climate change tbh. I'd imagine they are the ones giving the ostrichy type responses that read like they were written by a Brexiteer/oil industry lobbyist.

Soulesssummer · 28/07/2023 14:45

O no I fully believe their are posters on here with 4 + kids living their suburban middle class lifestyles who think being vegan is planet saving and they actually believe their own bullshit.

There is a new global class system. In that class system the old elite have managed to convince the aspiring elites that having ā€˜progressive values’ can help you achieve the societal superiority that you aspire. You don’t need money, you don’t need comforts, you simply need to sign up to the doctrine of climate hysteria, gender ideology and critical race theory.

While the the little people do all of this indulging in their new found values to join the imaginary elite, enlightened class, the traditional elite just get on with doing what they have always done - living comfortable lives without this nonsense getting in their way.

LlynTegid · 28/07/2023 14:46

Agree about those with large cars, or indeed those able to but too bone idle to walk short distances.

Yes. This.

The countries that are contributing most are the ones trying to drag themselves out of poverty.

Surely what should be happening now is to inspire bright young minds to discover newer and cleaner energy solutions, rather than sticking themselves to motorways šŸ™„ and forever lecturing us all how bad humanity is.

midgetastic · 28/07/2023 14:55

I am commonly posting on the relevant threads in an assertive way about climate change

I am a scientist and I work in the field
I in no way fit your character of a climate activist

I am pissed off with climate change deniers , with the shit stirrers trying to downplay the problem with lies , lies and more lies ,

and with people who think they have no role to play

And to be fair also with people with all the talk and no idea no matter what class they are, how many kids they have or what car they drive ; I don't care if you recycle plastic if you are buying shitloads in the first place and I don't care if you are vegan if your overall whole person carbon footprint is clearly not particularly low

And I am pissed of With people who expect activists to have zero carbon footprint or they won't listen to what they have to say

Is don't have a zero footprint
I don't think you should
It's a silly idea at this point in time
I'd like the encourage people to learn about their footprint and think how they could make smaller

clarebear111 · 28/07/2023 14:59

We have had Low Traffic Neighbourhoods imposed on us in our local area. Unfortunately, they aren't working at all, particularly for those on the gridlocked boundary roads, but you wouldn't believe the hypocrisy of those advocating for them. I had someone tell me it was ok for them to have their supermarket shopping delivered, because the emissions were lower than if they all made individual journeys (!). Sadly they're predominantly a bunch of middle class lobbyists with sharp elbows who like living in artifical cul-de-sacs, with their regularly used SUVs parked up outside their houses on their now deserted streets, whilst everyone else suffers. All their benefits are coming at the direct expense of those living on boundary roads and they couldn't give two hoots. The selfishness dressed up as some sort green agenda beggars belief. And of course the council are keen, because they are making a killing in fines.

I don't understand how your dual fuel is £700 a YEAR Confused

Our 2 bedroom flat is £430 a MONTH - it's mostly electricity, we hardly ever have the heating on

£430 a month?!!! My 5 bed detached costs around £290 a month to heat (gas and electricity) - how is yours costing £430?!!!

dutysuite · 28/07/2023 15:15

Lots of money to be made off the back of the climate con. Lots of very wealthy people telling others how to live all the while not cutting back themselves - take London Mayor Sadiq Khan, he bleats on about climate and how important ULEZ is but drives around in a convoy of Range Rovers to take his dogs to the park! All he cares about is furthering his career and filling his coffers. Therefore I’m ignoring it.

People with kids (!) should not and have no place on lecturing about climate change.
They are the worst criminal themselves.

I suppose you're right in an extreme way. If humans stopped having children right now, all of us, then that probably would be the best way to prevent further damage to the earth.

Farmageddon · 28/07/2023 15:34

Clarabe1 · 28/07/2023 13:39

Bloody David Attenborough winds me up. Who has got a bigger carbon footprint than him? He has been everywhere and seen everything but lectures the general public about climate change?? Leonardo DiCaprio- another fucking hypocrite. The poorest people have the smallest carbon footprint.

Yes, this bugs me no end - rich people who own too big houses, have too much stuff, have probably travelled a lot more than most of us, lecturing poorer people on how much we are failing. Just fuck off.

The reality is, until massive corporations and governments get serious about it, individual choices are a drop in the bucket.

That's not to say don't do your best - I don't have a car, I don't have kids, I recycle, I walk most places - but guilting people about every little thing is fucking tedious.

Mutinyonthecrunchie · 28/07/2023 15:35

All these people who supposedly love their kids so much but carry on polluting with oversized cars, x number of holidays etc are going to die at some point and those kids are going to have to live with the shit that their loving parents left behind.

We need an extinction level event and let the planet reset itself.

Arguably we are well in to an extinction event already - lots of species already lost worldwide.

And in UK, there has been a distinct loss of biodiversity - even compared to as recently as the 1950s.

Yes, driving for journeys that can be done by lower impact means is a bad thing to do.

But please remember that ULEZ is not an environmental policy in a climate change sense. It's about reducing harmful particulate matter in London's air

Hawkins0001 · 28/07/2023 18:35

It’s not.

It’s about plugging the financial hole in TFL’s budget which Khan has run into ground. Much like most of the services he is responsible for.

BarelyLiterate · 28/07/2023 19:13

Me too, OP. The level of ridiculous hysteria has now reached such extremes that I simply cannot take it seriously any more. The doomsayers have lost all credibility. I just ignore it now or, better still, turn it off and get on with my life.

Doubt that - it brings in way less than projections

Best way to see it they always say the planets overcrowded so a wee climate change is maybe what's needed šŸ¤·šŸ¼ā€ā™€ļø
What's the point in being scared when over our heads are always threats of nuclear bombs?

So if the earth was getting warmer then how could new ice form over this to bury it?
