Where to live in Blackpool

Hi everyone

Hope that everyone has had a restful weekend Posting here for traffic.

We live in London but My DH has recently gotten a job in one of the hospitals in Blackpool so will be based there 3 days a week and needs a base which we can visit during holidays etc

Where do you suggest? We have 2 pre teen children of the same gender and are a family of ethnic minority so we want somewhere we can feel comfortable

We visited and liked poulton de fyre which was really posh, and were also in central Blackpool near the beach which obviously is very touristy and possibly out of our price range

As this will be a 2nd property, our max budget is £120,000, though not sure of where to settle, children's school will remain in London but want a place that we can spend all school holidays etc the property will be a bit of an investment so also need somewhere that will hold it's value etc

I have looked at Layton which seems more affordable but not sure of what the area will be like eg is it diverse, nice, quiet etc?

If anyone knows the area please advise

Google maps says that Whitehaven is 2 hours 20 mins from Blackpool. That's nearly 5 hours a day commuting on top of long hospital shifts, do you really think that's a workable suggestion? Plus it will likely take longer in the daytime or during holiday season.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 16/07/2023 23:07

I think a lot of you have skim-read the OP and missed the part where she said they're wanting wherever they buy to be somewhere they spend all their holidays also! It's not just for her DH's job! That's why I said Whitehaven as tbh, it's the closest DECENT place to Blackpool which you can consider a holiday destination 🙄

AlfietheSchnauzer · 16/07/2023 23:10

@vera99 Morecambe is horrible! I took my child there once - never again. Not a holiday destination at all which is what OP is also wanting this place to be.

Plenty of people commute 2+ hours each way! In my previous job it was the norm to travel up to 3.5 hours away each way every day for 12 months at a time.

Rubbish as Eric Morecambe would say have you been on the sherberts 😁?

It’s over 100 miles away! You can’t seriously believe that there is nowhere else within 100miles of Blackpool hospital that is ‘decent’.

The Eden project is coming there and you have the Midland Hotel and some artists starting to come for the cheap properties and beautiful views of the Lakes.

Morecambe is probably worse than Blackpool (and that's saying something!) I honestly felt suicidal in Morecambe - very depressing place.

Blackpool - just avoid. Drive in from Garstang is probably your only option.

Toohardtofindaproperusername · 16/07/2023 23:15

Uhm....Blackpool is the a place to move ro, more a place to move from. Lots of jobs in a lot of hospitals so unless there is a big reason to be in,Blackpool .... ?

I agree, it is very depressing. It's like a Ghost of its former life as a seaside town. Same with Bridlington - awful

Some of the hysterical comments are hilarious. I've lived in Blackpool for ten years, having previously lived in many cities across England including Chester, London, Manchester, York Nd others

It's not a dump full of violent Albanian mafia and it even gets lovely weather 😂

My children go to an Ofsted outstanding school and we live just near the best award winning park in the UK. The town continues to undergo huge investment and over the last few years many quality places to eat have opened up as well as a more modern central market.

The beaches are free to enjoy, there is the Winter Gardens and the Grand Theatre for live shows and music. There are events on all the time on the promenade...air shows, music, comedy. Many of which are free to pop along and watch. You can jump on a bus for £2 and go through all the picturesque villages on the way to Lancaster and get off wherever you fancy for a country pub lunch.

Of course some areas have high levels of deprivation as does any major town or city. I've never been a victim of crime here or had any issues. Marton, Stanley park, Bispham, some parts of Layton and Squire's Gate wards are all decent.

I live in one of the most deprived wards in the country and have not experienced anything like what's been put in the comments here !

There absolutely isn't! I'm entitled to share my opinion with OP, just as you are. Only I don't attack you for sharing yours...

Here he is. I once saw Les Dawson in the basement of the Blackpool Coop - looking daggers at everybody as if to say keep away. He lived on millionaires row in Lytham. Also met Bobby Ball a lovely bloke on a wine bar in Lytham as well, friendly to everybody.

Spot on - never mind the knockers - oo er - feel the width. We had a very funny gay tram attendant on my last visit who had everybody laughing with a running commentary when taking the fare. My favourite caf is the 'secret' one in the old Regent’s cinema - always visit when I go there and chat with everybody - it’s like a group discussion and a laugh !

Er...
Eric Morecambe's name was actually John Eric Bartholomew, he took his stage name from his home town.
I think you just blew the non-existent credibility you had there! 😂

Ok, realise you are either drunk or on a wind up. 3.5 hour commute each way is ‘the norm’? 7 hours commuting per day, every day? Do you live in the Australian Outback?

AlfietheSchnauzer · 16/07/2023 23:32

@ErrolTheDragon I'm not looking for credibility love and OP is not looking for dead comedian's birth certificates (how sad to actually go googling a dead comedian! My God! 🤣)

I have just as much right to say that MORECAMBE IS SHIT as anyone else! I don't go attacking people & attempting to bully them, just because they have a differing opinion! That removed any & all of your credibility! 🤣

ZenNudist · 16/07/2023 23:35

@Tjit I'm from near Blackpool. My family mainly live in Fleetwood and Thornton Cleveleys. The hospital is Victoria hospital (where I was born). I don't live there now but it's not all awful.

Lytham and St Anne are posh end of town. I'm from Manchester now and we have friends who hire chi chi flats not so far from the beach for long weekends with the kids.

Bispham is also near the beach and very close to the hospital and would be good as a cheaper beach holiday let. There are restaurants, ice creams and amusements. It's like mini Blackpool. Hop on the tram to the centre for british sea side tacky.

Fleetwood a bit further away and whilst not the posh end of town has got a lot of lovely houses arranged around "the mount" with walking distance to the leisure centre pool and lovely parks and the beaches. Not bad for a place to holiday. My kids have lots of happy times with their grandparents. Also can look near rossall school (rossall area of Fleetwood is right next to the sea and 20 to 30 mins walk into Cleveleys

Victoria hospital is near Stanley park and there are many lovely homes near the psrk probably out of your price range and i cant see its great to holiday in. I know retired couples with lovely homes , fabulous well tended gardens and great lifestyles living there. Its not all deprivation.

People clearly don't know what they are talking about in terms of house price growth. The area has experienced growth. My grandma's house in Cleveleys was sold after her death, renovated, then sold on, going for way more money than the renovation cost.

Thornton is a nice little town not too far from the hospital but not so great for a holiday let.

If you don't want to be coastal Singleton is father away from hospital the other side of Poulton and quite rural close to m55. There's lots of nice big houses that way. Area include Hambleton, Elswick. I want to private school and lots of my friends lived around there. Along with Kirkham, Wesham, and Wrea Green. At that point you are closer to Preston which is nearest big town to Blackpool and better for shopping etc.

For a holiday my kids loved Blackpool zoo and the sandcastle waterpark. We've had fun at the Tower and to be honest they love the arcades and fish and chips in Fleetwood or Bispham. The centre is seedy but if you are a local you know where to find the nice bits. It gets very windy on the front.

ErrolTheDragon · 16/07/2023 23:37

I'm not looking for credibility

Just as well, really!

(I didn't need to google that well known fact. Well known by anyone who vaguely knows the area, anyway.)

Parts - maybe even large parts - morecambe and Blackpool undeniably are pretty shit, but there are plenty of perfectly acceptable places in and around them.
