Where to live in Blackpool

Hi everyone

Hope that everyone has had a restful weekend Posting here for traffic.

We live in London but My DH has recently gotten a job in one of the hospitals in Blackpool so will be based there 3 days a week and needs a base which we can visit during holidays etc

Where do you suggest? We have 2 pre teen children of the same gender and are a family of ethnic minority so we want somewhere we can feel comfortable

We visited and liked poulton de fyre which was really posh, and were also in central Blackpool near the beach which obviously is very touristy and possibly out of our price range

As this will be a 2nd property, our max budget is £120,000, though not sure of where to settle, children's school will remain in London but want a place that we can spend all school holidays etc the property will be a bit of an investment so also need somewhere that will hold it's value etc

I have looked at Layton which seems more affordable but not sure of what the area will be like eg is it diverse, nice, quiet etc?

If anyone knows the area please advise

Don't do it. Blackpool, aside from the deprivation, racism and violence, is one of the wettest, windiest, coldest places in the UK. You will end up spending a fortune keeping the children occupied if it rains because its not just rain. Its awful. Even in summer.

We went for the day as DC was desperate to go to the Sandcastle. We were home by 3pm as while the rest of the country was dry/sunny, it was torrential rain there. Yuck.

So.based in your one day, out in Blackpool. When it wss wet and windy you have decided it is the wettest place in the uk🤔
I live about 40 miles from,Blackpool.and have Been many ,many time, sometimes its been, wet and windy sometimes its been warm ,sometimes its Been hot even just like the rest of the UK really🙄
I have Been to Brighton once in 1994 it was January and icy cold ,should I assume its always like that?

Best place to stay in Blackpool? As far out of its borders as possible. It’s a shit hole.

Brighton always feel a bit wanky whenever I go and now only 1 pier where Blackpool has 3 , Winter Gardens and the Tower and the Pleasure Beach plus the Illuminations in the autumn (tbh they look a bit old hat these days but loved them every year as kid. Oh and the Tower Circus which really is world-class in a beautiful venue.

As in any built up area in the world, you have deprivation and areas of affluence. Blackpool is no different. Morecambe again areas of deprivation but more affluent areas, it’s also on the up with many people investing in property because of the Eden project. The views across Morecambe Bay are breathtaking and you can watch people swimming, paddle boarding and kite boarding sitting on the beautiful prom surrounded by families enjoying themselves. Yes it’s rubbish if the weathers not great but that’s the same at any seaside resort.
my only reservation about moving to these areas is I don’t think they are very diverse, I’d advise visiting to see how you feel, I’ve friends from multi cultural backgrounds and they’ve never had any direct racism but they did say going through primary school they did feel different but once they went to the Grammars it wasn’t a problem as it was much more multi cultural.

Take no notice OP. Blackpool is no worse
than many other towns. There are e obviously places to avoid, ie: closer to the town centre, but South shore (near the airport) Starr Gate, right near the beach, Stanley Park area, parts of Bispham, Cleveleys, St Anne's is nice in parts.
Lytham is a bit up itself but not bad. Do your own research and don't allow others to put you off.
Good luck!!

Except it IS worse though! I’ve already shown actual proof that it’s officially the most deprived area of the UK!

QueenOfHiraeth · 17/07/2023 23:11

@AlfietheSchnauzer What's your axe to grind here? There seems to be lots of people with local experience giving pictures of the good and the bad of different areas. You seem to be popping up regularly to post damning statistics with no personal experience.
I'm just wondering why you are so focused on the negatives of the area?

Lake District
Peak District
Leeds
Liverpool
Chester
York
Yorkshire dales

All within 100 miles of Blackpool, I think the OP will be just fine

Hahahaha exactly what I was thinking!

I grew up in Blackpool (I’m 21 and moved to Yorkshire now) and I really didn’t like living there very much. Was very deprived and unsafe town. I lived in Marton, which was actually quite a nice area, but I’d have preferred Lytham, St Anne’s, or Poulton. Living in the outskirts, in the slightly nicer areas, is essential. I wouldn’t touch the town centre with a ten foot pole. Good luck! Xx
