Where to live in Blackpool

Hi everyone

Hope that everyone has had a restful weekend Posting here for traffic.

We live in London but My DH has recently gotten a job in one of the hospitals in Blackpool so will be based there 3 days a week and needs a base which we can visit during holidays etc

Where do you suggest? We have 2 pre teen children of the same gender and are a family of ethnic minority so we want somewhere we can feel comfortable

We visited and liked poulton de fyre which was really posh, and were also in central Blackpool near the beach which obviously is very touristy and possibly out of our price range

As this will be a 2nd property, our max budget is £120,000, though not sure of where to settle, children's school will remain in London but want a place that we can spend all school holidays etc the property will be a bit of an investment so also need somewhere that will hold it's value etc

I have looked at Layton which seems more affordable but not sure of what the area will be like eg is it diverse, nice, quiet etc?

If anyone knows the area please advise

Chorley to Blackpool is a shitty commute. 45 mins would be a very good day (middle of the night!!). Bad idea. Not quite as bad as Whitehaven but at that end of the scale.

I worked with a lad from Blackpool, his description: "Las Vegas at the front, Chernobyl at the back"

OP, I grew up close to Blackpool and have lived in Blackpool itself for about 15 years now. We are all good. My children are not delinquents but young people with good manners, hopes, dreams and high aspirations, as are their friends. The area around the hospital - Stanley Park and the Zoo is worth exploring but otherwise, moving out to Poulton, St Anne’s, Lytham, Kirkham, over-Wyre, Thornton, Cleveleys is worth considering. North Shore and Bispham also worth a look. These are all commutable to the hospital but some are nearer than others, obviously.

It is a tough town, high levels of deprivation. But so are parts of London. And everywhere else. You can have fabulous holidays, loads to do, try not to pay any attention to the naysayers.

Blackpool is terrible. The drug and human trafficking/prostitution trades there have been taken over by the Albanian mafia which is as ruthless as it gets. It gets worse and worse as more and more criminal foot soldiers are imported daily with impunity. It's a dreadful place now

I would stay as far away as possible. I don't know what you could buy far enough away in the rural villages - nothing for that budget that I can think of. I would think a long commute is the answer.

@HundredMilesAnHour depends what time of day. I do the route often, if he’s in healthcare he’ll miss all the traffic, shifts start at 7 and finish 7:30

YesterdayO · 16/07/2023 22:01

The former Miners Convalescent Home flats could be lovely, what a good suggestion. No buildings between them and the sea front, and towards the quieter end of Blackpool.

Look at the Admiral’s Point addresses here.

Very convenient for tram rides along the front between Fleetwood and Blackpool South Shore for your family. Get a bus or cycle to Blackpool Vic.

The Miners Home in Bispham has some lovely apartments for sale. It’s a grade 2 listed building with sea views.

Yes, this was my thought. It is also gated which might help with the OP’s fears. Great location in terms of bus, trams and at the hospital in 10 - 20 minutes, depending on time of day.

Sadless · 16/07/2023 22:03

I was told the farther away from the beach the better it is and that's from people that live in Blackpool.
I would rent first then decide

I lived in Chorley for 20 years and all my family still do. I stand by it being a shitty commute. Nor would I want to be based in Chorley as a holiday home. Prices have risen a lot and £120k won't get you much, not even on somewhere like Buckshaw.

Tooshytoshine · 16/07/2023 22:06

Poulton might be a bit out of your price range. You could try over wyre (across the shard bridge) as it is quiet safe, semi rural and about half an hour drive from Blackpool (direct buses to Blackpool Victoria hospital). It's not very diverse but people are very friendly.

Parts of Blackpool are quite nice - near Stanley Park by the hospital is actually alright.

Maybe rent for a bit at first and visit the areas

Glo1988 · 16/07/2023 22:07

If you don’t need to buy somewhere, I’d recommend a holiday home on ribby hall holiday village. Well within budget and a wonderful place to spend weekends and holidays. Wouldn’t necessarily lose its value either!!

Glo1988 · 16/07/2023 22:08

Ps ribby hall is in Wrea green so 2 mins off the m55 so 15 mins less for you than Poulton, and 15 mins commute to the hospital for hubby!

Auite a few doctors and nurses already live there too.

Tooshytoshine · 16/07/2023 22:11

Staining and Norcross are in-between Poulton and Layton and are worth a look as you won't pay the Poulton premium but will have a good chance of nice neighbours

vera99 · 16/07/2023 22:11

JayAlfredPrufrock · 16/07/2023 20:39

Wrea Green.

My sister and niece live there it is lovely. It's a bit pricey I like Bispham and St Annes if you want value without being grotty. Lytham is the gold standard - Poulton wishes it could be Lytham but never will be.

Tooshytoshine · 16/07/2023 22:14

Carleton is also nice and cheaper than Poulton but you can walk into the centre and are on transport links to the hospital/ Blackpool

Tooshytoshine · 16/07/2023 22:15

Ansdell is in-between Lytham and St Anne's, but is not as nice as either but a bit cheaper

Riiiiiiiiiight

RedRobyn2021 · 16/07/2023 22:17

I was visiting Fleetwood a couple of weeks ago which is 20 minutes outside of Blackpool and I thought it was nice. It has a lovely bay there.

Roystonv · 16/07/2023 22:19

Whitehaven😂

vera99 · 16/07/2023 22:20

If you want a real outlier Fleetwood, I rather like the old town which looks like a poor person's Bath ! Fylde villages are nice St Michael's on Wyre is lovely and rural whilst being a pretty easy car commute. If you want cheap but not too grotty Squires Gate ain't bad either. Whatever you do keep away from the sand dunes developments. My BIL was a BT engineer and those houses get filled up with sand so much that you have to keep all the windows closed which is a real pain.

timetochangethename · 16/07/2023 22:23

How old are your children? By the time they reach secondary school they'll be wanting to hang out with friends in the school holidays.

My kids would have hated to spend all school holidays hundreds of miles from where we live. It would also rule them out of doing any kind of team sport.
