Exactly that.

I'm sure 80% of these people wouldn't dare say half the things they post to someone's face. So why online?

I don't mean the brutal honesty; I mean the unnecessary nastiness.

A few of the old-timers have said this has only become a proper issue in recent years on MN. Interesting...

This is about the third thread I’ve seen on the same issue today! Why the outrage today? I’ve been here since 2011 and it doesn’t seem particularly different.

It was just the same 20 years ago trust me. Many of the posters were very erudite in their vicious appraisals back then too. Truth hurts I guess. When people are real dicks, they get called out ime. I’ve had my arse handed to me more than once. Fair enough. It’s a public forum and everyone is entitled to an opinion.

I joined in 2003. I promise you it's far nastier now in that 95% of all replies are rude. But there was always rude posters. People getting outraged that your talking about kids problems for example. Why read a thread saying "my child..." then some twat posts they are fed up talking about kids. I'm dorry but they come across as gagging for a fight. Must be trolls. No one is really that thick

I think people feel bold as they’re behind as a screen, under a pseudonym and could be absolutely anybody or nobody… and no one will ever know. So they can say the things they wouldn’t say in real life

I think it's cause they get to spew out the venom that they secretly harbour towards certain sectors of society (mostly benefits claimants).

In real life they'd not like to be seen as nasty.

I agree, people are horrible on here, very unnecessarily.
A lot of the time people post because they need help or reassurance. Then they get the wrath of nasty people- it's awful!

I joined in 2008 - it's not got any worse in that time, although most weeks there has been a thread complaining that it has and making the stunningly original observation that people type things on here they wouldn't say to your face - who knew?

If you find 95% of replies are rude, you are reading a very tiny, carefully selected portion of AIBU threads, and nothing else.

Of course people are more honest on here than they would be in real life. In real life you have to worry about the ongoing relationship, on here you can be honest.
