Exactly that.

I'm sure 80% of these people wouldn't dare say half the things they post to someone's face. So why online?

I don't mean the brutal honesty; I mean the unnecessary nastiness.

A few of the old-timers have said this has only become a proper issue in recent years on MN. Interesting...

I don’t have to give you any examples you fucking cunt

@chipsandpeas

my post was originally deleted but it has been reinstated. I was just trying to be ironic and show an example of a shitty post and I definitely did not want you to think it was a personal attack.

I laughed the procrastinati 😂

@baggiesmalls Bloody hell that's awful. Blows my mind that some people can be that motivated to do something like that, and what their actions actually bring to their own life.

It was a small fb group all from here but yes - I couldn't believe it either .

That someone would go to that much trouble to
Have a nosey round my life and actually put me in danger from my abuser . They had found my fb page , found him from it and because he had a very unique unusual name they found his ex wife's place of work and emailed her to ask if he had been abusive to her .

She didn't answer but she did immediately inform him .

I was stuck - I was 4 days into a 28 day cruise . Stuck on a boat with him raging at me for calling him abusive and his ex who was infertile found out I'd been pregnant .

God I'm surprised I came back alive . He could have just pushed me over board . Let's just say that was a very long and lonely month .

I deleted my fb account and disassociated with this site . I de - regged. That stalker nosey bastard took away every lifeline of support I had .

I find it ironic that people are bemoaning the lack of humour when the humour on this thread was only appreciated by a couple of people and thanks to @StayAnonn for copying the post or I would have missed it

You have to hand it to this thread for unintended entertainment value. PPs decrying the site's lack of humour (of course expecting others to provide the sparkling wit of which they're incapable), then someone does and it's greeted with puckered-up cats bum faces of disapproval. Far funnier than the Glory Days of the puerile penis beaker or snapped and farted threads, which site members deemed so replete with wit that Tommy Cooper must have been shitting himself.

I haven't seen such great unintentional hilarity since Derek Acorah's Michael Jackson seance. This thread should be nominated for 'Classics!'

CarolinaInTheMorning · 02/07/2023 17:38

Where was the sparkling wit on this thread? I must have missed it.

Just the point.

It can be extremely brutal on here but I genuinely don't think it's any worse now than when I first joined (about 12-13 years ago).

NerrSnerr · 03/07/2023 15:00

I do believe there are a proportion of users on Mumsnet who are deeply unhappy in their own lives and take some sort of relief when they can exert those emotions out on someone online.

I agree with this. I suspect a lot of the unhappy people are not truthful on here and pretend they are size 6, only eat 800 calories a day and are very fashionable and wouldn't dream of wearing outdated floral dresses and skinny jeans and look down on anyone on here who isn't perfect. I suspect the person's reality is very different to what they post.

Yes - or even if they are intake-controlled skinnies who wear only this season's styles, they must be equally unhappy in themselves. Naturally 'gifted' people know they're lucky; they don't harangue others to be more like them. Those who are viciously self-critical, terrified of falling short somehow, are more likely to apply their rigid standards to other people and project their mean inner voices onto them.

We see a lot of that in weight & diet threads! Poor loves need our sympathy (but don't want it).

I'm 11 years in and whilst people are nasty, they were nastier before. There was a lot of hounding posters from one thread to another - I think it still happens but nowhere as much.
