To call this an assault?

I was shopping in one of those supermarkets, that isn’t actually a supermarket but sells all the stuff that you know that you don’t know you need until you walk in today. When I finished, I approached the till area. There were a few tills with one woman on one till. the other tills were empty. I joined the queue for the till and there were three or four people ahead of me.

I had a trolley with two items in it, and I was holding the trolley with both hands. At some point the cashier left her position at the till to walk towards the customer services desk and look at two ladies working there. I didn’t realise she had done this until she yelled over aggressively to them “I’m sending some customers down to you because I’ve got plenty of them here” or words to that effect.

Without me expecting it she then aggressively physically pushed my trolley while I still had hold of it with both hands so that it spun 45° to the right in the direction of the customer services desk. My arms were pulled and my body was spun around as it went. She then turned around and went back to her till.

I think this was an assault.

I was shocked and upset… A few people that I know agree with me, and a few don’t

I want to understand what a shop “that isn’t actually a supermarket but sells all the stuff that you know that you don’t know you need until you walk in” actually is.
And why the OP is so coy about it.

I guess B and M? I often find things I didn’t know I wanted in there. Also occasionally things I do.

I was in our local one only yesterday and only one till was open with at least 6 people in the queue. The woman on the till yelled for one of her colleagues to come and help. However, she did not resort to sudden and violent trolley reorientation.

If she had I think a rather tetchy "I say, steady on" would have covered the situation

EmmiJay · 27/06/2023 22:54

You should have asked to speak with management as soon as it happened. Tell them their staff are overworked and shoving customer trolleys all over the gaff in their frustration. That's rude what she did, and in my part of London, it would have started an all-out in-store rage fest!😅

Houseplantmad · 27/06/2023 22:58

Not assault but poor behaviour and worthy of a complaint there and then. Goodness knows what could have happened if it was someone elderly or less steady on their feet.

SquirrelySponges · 27/06/2023 23:00

Assault is unwanted touching. She didn't touch you she touched the trolley. She was aggressive and rude, but didn't assault you. You could call it a public order offence if you like because it caused harassment, alarm or distress to members of the public (you!).

trustyrustie · 27/06/2023 21:25

I didn’t have the chance to let go, because she pushed it while I had hold of it, I was already gripping it, and she pushed it really quickly and really hard

Rude, and she is lucky she did not target someone with a rotator cuff injury. A jerk like that (applies to the cashier herself, AND her actions) can easily re-injure the area, resulting in months of recovery.

ThatFraggle · 27/06/2023 23:00

You got some piss poor customer service. You can email with a complaint.

"At around 11.45 on Monday, a staff member with a long blonde ponytail, pushed my trolley, etc."

You'll get a £5 off voucher. The staff member will be told off.

What else do you want?

And the past tense of spin is spun, not span.

Poor OP on her way to the customer services desk.

trustyrustie · 27/06/2023 23:01

@andasthedaysgoby yes by the front and she span me 90 degrees not 45, my mistake

Floating101 · 27/06/2023 23:08

Can I just check, was it 45 degrees or 90 degrees?

I think we’re all being played like fiddles here!

Ffs!! There is no criminal offensive what so ever. People who do not work in this area really need to stop playing police and lawyers.
Her intent was not to cause op harm or disorder it was to move her trolley.
I am not disputing it shocked op, but please remember police deal with criminal matters not moral ones.
Plus have some people on here forgot what trollies are like they don't brake, one slight push in a side ways direction will have that spin effect. Ever gone wayward spinning round a corner when pushing a trolley at a supermarket I know I have!

Just report it to the store management if you feel strongly about it.

MrsO3 · 27/06/2023 23:12

Sorry but why do I find this hilarious 🤣

Gotta get the angles correct Karen! 🤣

Confusion101 · 27/06/2023 23:13

@trustyrustie the degree does not matter..... According to 405 out of the 483 people who have voted, it was not assault. End of!

changeyerheadworzel · 27/06/2023 23:13

Veruk Assault.....get a grip.

Scirocco · 27/06/2023 23:14

It sounds like she was grumpy and rude, but it doesn't sound like assault. If you're upset about it, make a complaint - you might get an apology and some vouchers.

Tessabelle74 · 27/06/2023 23:15

This reply has been hidden until the MNHQ team can have a look at it.

Oooooooooooohhhhhhh someone's had a trolley related incident in the past 😂 (I'm not 12, but I'm also not massively over reacting in shops or on Mumsnet threads I haven't even started either, I think you and the OP need to calm down 🤣)

TimesRwo · 27/06/2023 23:15

Judging by the other thread you just created, you are clearly someone who overreacts and dramatises things.

Did you even turn 45 degrees? Oops, I mean 90!

Fighterofthenightman1 · 27/06/2023 23:15

You're overreacting massively and it's definitely NOT assult

vodkaredbullgirl · 27/06/2023 23:16

Waiting for this one to disappear.

Brightbear · 27/06/2023 23:16

Maybe she has got an interview due working in the waltzer at the fare coming up and was practising?

Remember the spins of those things🤢

ToxicBiennial · 27/06/2023 23:16

and we’re back in the room.

ButImNotOldEnough · 27/06/2023 23:17

No it’s not assault.

Teenagehorrorbag · 27/06/2023 23:17

Not assault, don't be silly. It was rude and aggressive, and I would absolutely be complaining to the management. I imagine you were taken by surprise and jumped a bit as would anyone. She sounds awful and you should definitely take it further.

But not assault, not a police matter if that's what you are thinking. And compensation is only for genuine harm or loss of earnings, not just getting a bit of a shock.
