To call this an assault?

I was shopping in one of those supermarkets, that isn’t actually a supermarket but sells all the stuff that you know that you don’t know you need until you walk in today. When I finished, I approached the till area. There were a few tills with one woman on one till. the other tills were empty. I joined the queue for the till and there were three or four people ahead of me.

I had a trolley with two items in it, and I was holding the trolley with both hands. At some point the cashier left her position at the till to walk towards the customer services desk and look at two ladies working there. I didn’t realise she had done this until she yelled over aggressively to them “I’m sending some customers down to you because I’ve got plenty of them here” or words to that effect.

Without me expecting it she then aggressively physically pushed my trolley while I still had hold of it with both hands so that it spun 45° to the right in the direction of the customer services desk. My arms were pulled and my body was spun around as it went. She then turned around and went back to her till.

I think this was an assault.

I was shocked and upset… A few people that I know agree with me, and a few don’t

I had somebody haul me round by the trolley in Aldi the first time I used it. I had failed to park my trolly into the little bay correctly so the assistant hauled me into position then threw my shopping at me... it left me terrified to shop in Aldi for a while. I did survive the experience and even managed to successfully shop in Aldi. Hang in there op!

Waiting for this one to disappear.

Do you think OP is spinning a yarn 😂

Howdoesitworkagain · 27/06/2023 22:37

Sorry, @PrincessofWellies , you’re comparing spitting at someone with moving their trolley? Is that the basis of your legal argument? Not sure about that 😂

You have spectacularly missed the point. It's the apprehension of violence that constitutes assault.

trustyrustie · 27/06/2023 23:19

@Confusion101 they were deciding that on wrong information though which was my fault but yes I was spun 90 degrees

Was the till person called Aiden by any chance?

Must admit I also wondered!

If there’s blame, there’s a claim 😂

If there's blame
there's a claim
if not outright fame
and the opportunity to frame
a grumpy Poundstretcher's dame
whose trolley shoving left me lame
Anyone saying they wouldn't do the same
needs to start playing the game
Abandon your shame
Make compo your aim

I just sang this out loud. Much appreciated

Yes, somebody else said to me, it can’t be assault because she didn’t physically put her hands on you which made me think if she’d hit me with a stick would that be any different? Because she hadn’t actually put her hands on me. I was holding a trolley which she spun extremely quickly, and I had no time to react or loosen my grip

She didn’t hit you over the head with the trolley though did she? She spun your trolley with the force of a thousand suns which sent you flying all round B&M’s and you’re now wondering if there could be an assault charge or a whiplash claim in it?

Probably 😂😂 that was classic!

changeyerheadworzel · 27/06/2023 23:29

Did she spin you right 'round, baby, right 'round
Like a record, baby, right 'round, 'round, 'round

GodisaBC · 27/06/2023 23:31

I reckon Costco.

GodisaBC · 27/06/2023 23:31

although I don’t think you could leave Costco with only 2 things.

ToxicBiennial · 27/06/2023 23:31

Like a trolly baby right round, round round.

Those fuckers won't let me over the threshold. Angry

If it's Costco, I have no sympathy, @trustyrustie . They should have spun you all the way to Krypton.

Arrrgh, no one’s opinion is going to change because you keep repeatedly correcting it was 90 degrees not 45.

SquirrelySponges · 27/06/2023 23:36

I do work in this area.... for the police in fact 🙄 I didn't say there was criminal intent, and yes I wouldn't personally report it, but people do and it is an offence!

trustyrustie · 27/06/2023 23:38

@Confusion101 im just trying to explain because 45 degrees does seem
a bit dramatic but I was shifted from north to east very quickly!

I think OPs just trying a different angle!

Mumtothreegirlies · 27/06/2023 23:38

It was very aggressive of her and perhaps could be considered assault. I wouldn’t personally call the police but I would be putting in a formal complaint. I’ve worked in retail and no matter how tired, underpaid and overworked I was I never once took it out on the customers, so I get really mad when shop assistants do things like this.

But if it was 90 degree wouldn't it be North to South, not North to East.

I don’t think B&M sell compasses? Hence the confusion.

supersonicginandtonic · 27/06/2023 23:43

How on earth were you injured from a trolley moving 45 degrees. She can't have pushed it that hard it it only moved 45 degrees 🤦🏼‍♀️
