To think public nudity during the heatwave is an example of male entitlement

Yesterday I went in to a kebab shop to get a pizza. I should preface this by saying I am aware of the heat and how uncomfortable it is for those working within kitchen environments. There were two people, a boy and a girl, who both looked about 16 working on the till. The girl was fully dressed (although in summer clothes) in short shorts and a crop top. However, the lad was wearing an apron but when he turned around I could see he just had his boxers on underneath the apron. This isn’t a one off either over the last few days I’ve seen scores of mainly teenage boys walking around topless in the heat when teenage girls seem capable of keeping fully clothed. I didn’t say anything at the time and I appreciate how warm it is. However, Aibu to think that this is an example of male entitlement that: 1) he didn’t worry whether it would make his female colleague feel uncomfortable and 2) the girl wouldn’t have been able to do that due to the risk of sexual harassment and the fact pubic nudity seems more acceptable from men than women. Aibu?

Sorry must have missed it, who was nude?

AndrexPuppy · 16/06/2023 09:13

Didn’t happen, sorry

ApplesInTheSunshine · 16/06/2023 09:14

YABU. Stop trying to find things to be offended by.

Startwithamimosa · 16/06/2023 09:15

If it's true then probably fair. Usually it's females who are barely clothed compared to males? 🤷‍♀️

YABU. Stop trying to find things to be offended by.

Is that what you say to everybody who is offended by something?

motheroreily · 16/06/2023 09:16

Someone cooking in a kebab shop in their pants sounds very unhygienic

hattyhathat · 16/06/2023 09:19

How are his boxers different to her shorts?

brunettemic · 16/06/2023 09:22

No different to how in many workplaces women can wear skirts and strappy tops but men have to wear short and trousers though is it. Obviously boxers is a touch more extreme but you know what I mean.

HiCandles · 16/06/2023 09:26

I know what you mean OP. I don't think anyone should be partially clothed working in a food environment tbh for hygiene reasons. Disgusting to think if one of his armpit hairs went in the food.
I've had a similar thought seeing topless men walking around outdoors, women can't do that. It's often cooler to have light thin clothing on than bare skin in the sunshine anyway so I think this is just an excuse to show bodies off which is spectacularly entitled to presume we all want to see half nude sweatiness in front of us at the supermarket etc.

OrwellianTimes · 16/06/2023 09:28

Many workplaces women can wear what they like so long as it’s smartish and not mega revealing, whilst the men have to wear formal trousers, long sleeve shirt, and tie.

hattyhathat · 16/06/2023 09:19

If you don’t know that, it’s going to be hard to explain. Here’s a hint though

Bluebells1970 · 16/06/2023 09:30

That's pretty unhygienic to be walking about in a pair of boxers and serving food...

I'd find a better place to eat from, OP. I'd have walked straight back out again.

watcherintherye · 16/06/2023 09:32

That's pretty unhygienic to be walking about in a pair of boxers and serving food...

I think I’d have been a bit put out, tbh, but rationally, why are clean boxers any less hygienic than clean shorts?

MasterBeth · 16/06/2023 09:33
  1. He wasn't nude. There was no public nudity.

  2. You have no idea if he had consulted with the girl or if she felt uncomfortable.

  3. Yes, society considers topless women to be more sexualised/inappropriate for public display than men. This is unfair and sexist but hardly news.

PinkyFlamingo · 16/06/2023 09:33

What a load of rubbish.

FiveShelties · 16/06/2023 09:34

Sorry, only worth 4/10 - must try harder.

LaBefana · 16/06/2023 09:35

hattyhathat · 16/06/2023 09:19

How are his boxers different to her shorts?

His boxers are one cloth layer between his sweaty bollocks and where food is being prepared. Her shorts, probably have panties or what I still call 'knickers' underneath.

I try to avoid kebab shops anyway. Now I have one more reason.

Fabellini · 16/06/2023 09:37

@Allthegoodnamesarechosen
I suspect if it’s a teenage girl then the shorts are going to be more like these than the ones you’ve pictured, and not much different to boxers really.
And to the poster concerned about his armpit hair getting in the food - if she was wearing a strappy top then any armpit hair she might have could just as easily do the same.

MasterBeth · 16/06/2023 09:37

Boxer shorts are not intrinsically more revealing than shorts.

Jifmicroliquid · 16/06/2023 09:39

I felt that the OP was referring to the fact that he was only wearing shorts and no top (perhaps I’ve read that wrong?)

I do get sick of seeing topless men everywhere in the summer to be honest.

LaBefana · 16/06/2023 09:39

Personally, it's not specifically the genital/arse area that bothers me about scantily clad food servers, rather the acreage of bare flesh overall that would put me off.

PizzaPastaWine · 16/06/2023 09:41

I don't think it's male entitlement - there were two 16 year old girls in my supermarket yesterday wearing just bras and those short lycra shorts.

Different folks I guess. Plus I think now its just different and not male entitlement.

Whatkindofuckeryisthis · 16/06/2023 09:50

Male bashing again ffs!
Wearing boxers whilst preparing food is just odd. However out and about I don’t see the issue with a man being topless! Women can wear tiny crop tops and hot pants and no one would batter an eye lid, men can’t exactly wear a little top like us women! Some people make or female dress inappropriate for the location but this isn’t just males!!

onefinemess · 16/06/2023 09:52

Yeah, absolutely sexist OP.

It's fucking ridiculous that teenage girls are prevented from working topless. In every other industry and workplace, we are free to walk around with our tits out, but for some (obviously sexist, misogynistic and oppressive) reason, teenage girls are treated differently.

If I'd been at that staff meeting, where her (assuming it's a male) boss told her she wasn't allowed to take her top off, I tell you what, he'd have had an ear full from me.

She must have been so traumatised, did you ask her if she was OK? Because not challenging sexist behaviour makes you complicit. If you see it, say it.

That poor girl has every right to serve customers with her bare breasts exposed, or to at least show a little side-boob under an apron.

That pig ignorant, sexist arsehole of a MALE (again assuming here) should be named and shamed for not I sitting that girl take her top off too.
