To think public nudity during the heatwave is an example of male entitlement

Yesterday I went in to a kebab shop to get a pizza. I should preface this by saying I am aware of the heat and how uncomfortable it is for those working within kitchen environments. There were two people, a boy and a girl, who both looked about 16 working on the till. The girl was fully dressed (although in summer clothes) in short shorts and a crop top. However, the lad was wearing an apron but when he turned around I could see he just had his boxers on underneath the apron. This isn’t a one off either over the last few days I’ve seen scores of mainly teenage boys walking around topless in the heat when teenage girls seem capable of keeping fully clothed. I didn’t say anything at the time and I appreciate how warm it is. However, Aibu to think that this is an example of male entitlement that: 1) he didn’t worry whether it would make his female colleague feel uncomfortable and 2) the girl wouldn’t have been able to do that due to the risk of sexual harassment and the fact pubic nudity seems more acceptable from men than women. Aibu?

If he was wearing an apron... and his shorts, then he seems to have more clothing on than a woman wearing a crop top and shorts.

Hold on, are you seriously trying to claim no woman has ever been arrested for being in public topless? Are you really, really sure about that?!

No, not absolutely. She could possibly arrested for a public order offence rather than indecent exposure.

Well there you go then 🙄

@gannett

the performative recoiling in this thread.

🙄

I don't think it's 'performative' (unpleasant judgy word IMHO) to be repulsed by sweaty flesh when you are buying food.

This is indeed performative, because it's deliberately exaggerated and not especially logical. You see sweaty flesh in shops as a matter of course - sweaty foreheads, sweaty shoulders, sweaty arms. People sweat and those bits don't have to be covered up by anyone. I fail to see how sweat from a slightly different part of the human body is so much worse.

Also you don't usually get to see inside restaurant kitchens but best believe the chefs are sweating in there with how hot it gets.

A Daily Fail/ red top story if ever there was one !

As one who had to sweat in the City in the 70s in a jacket, collar and tie while female staff were in summer dresses or similar, bloody good luck to him say I!

Is that what you say to everybody who is offended by something?

Pretty much. Okay, she’s offended. So what? Confused

No different to how in many workplaces women can wear skirts and strappy tops but men have to wear short and trousers though is it. Obviously boxers is a touch more extreme but you know what I mean.

Men (and women) are allowed to wear shorts where I work, as long as they are "proper" shorts and not beach shorts, cycling shorts, cut-off jeans, football shorts etc and a respectable length.

I was in the office yesterday, and one of the directors was wearing a very nice pair of chino shorts and a short-sleeved seersucker shirt. He looked perfectly smart, and very comfortable.

And I couldn't help noticing that he had rather nice legs ...

I don't know where you live, but I regularly see girls out in bikini tops and those shorts where you can see their actual bum cheeks and beyond.

I've seen a few girls out in exactly that over the last few days. A couple of them had shorts so short that half their arses were visible.

It really bothered me, but only in the sense that I wished I still had the body I had 40 years ago. I probably would have done the same if it had been a thing then.

I’d argue that’s the exception to the rule but it’s good that that they allow that, sounds like a good employer. I’ve said on other posts DH is a teacher so that’s a good example…female teachers can wear skirts or dresses but a male teacher can’t (unless they’re a PE teacher).
