To think public nudity during the heatwave is an example of male entitlement

Yesterday I went in to a kebab shop to get a pizza. I should preface this by saying I am aware of the heat and how uncomfortable it is for those working within kitchen environments. There were two people, a boy and a girl, who both looked about 16 working on the till. The girl was fully dressed (although in summer clothes) in short shorts and a crop top. However, the lad was wearing an apron but when he turned around I could see he just had his boxers on underneath the apron. This isn’t a one off either over the last few days I’ve seen scores of mainly teenage boys walking around topless in the heat when teenage girls seem capable of keeping fully clothed. I didn’t say anything at the time and I appreciate how warm it is. However, Aibu to think that this is an example of male entitlement that: 1) he didn’t worry whether it would make his female colleague feel uncomfortable and 2) the girl wouldn’t have been able to do that due to the risk of sexual harassment and the fact pubic nudity seems more acceptable from men than women. Aibu?

🙄🙄🙄🙄 male entitlement

What I find far more offensive are the vast scores of women - young and old - wearing shorts where their huge ass cheeks are spilling out the back.

Give me bare male torso any day over that. And I see the first far more often.

Nothing you've mentioned is nudity either. I highly doubt he had boxers on

Pics or it didn't happen 🙄

I find it really annoying when men take their shirts off when it's hot. We do not need to see their beer bellies. But also - why do it? You're actually cooler when your clothes wick sweat away from your body.

Sweat is designed to sit on the skin and then cool you by the process of it being evaporated. Having clothes on is warmer than not.

In this weather..Where there is a topless man there is an equally inappropriately dressed woman...ass cheeks galore.

It's just hot. Let people cool down!

Someone cooking in a kebab shop in their pants sounds very unhygienic

My only objection would be this.
If people don’t mind their food sprayed with sweat from his underarms and upper body that’s their concern. I doubt his clothes met h&s rules in his workplace.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 16/06/2023 10:40

You’d have loved the sight I beheld last Saturday OP - a couple of hundred naked cyclists tootling merrily down Piccadilly (the London one). Nearly all male, though I did glimpse a couple of women. It was roasting hot - I did wonder about sunburnt willies.

lljkk · 16/06/2023 10:40

The main nudity I saw yesterday were gals sunbathing topless with weeny bottom coverings at the local Uni. I don't know why they court sunburns like that.

This is 1st year DC school has ever allowed boys to wear shorts in summer term. The lads were wearing skirts last year in protest, when we had those crazy heat waves. Anyone recall when male bus & train drivers turned up in skirts to try to get some clothing parity? Sweden & UK that one.

Click bait.

OttoGraph · 16/06/2023 10:45

just call EHO and report them, job done

whiskyinthejaro · 16/06/2023 11:00

If I ran a shop or restaurant/cafe I would ensure all staff wore a top and suitable bottoms. I like the fact that McD's have a rule that tops must be worn. To be fair in my experience I think males are often expected to be more 'attired' than females although this may be changing. A lot of educational places and workplaces I attended in the past often had an expectation that men should be in a collar, tie and smart trousers whereas women should be 'smart casual' which can give a lot of leeway! One secondary school I went to the boys could wear smart uniform or their own suit with tie but the girls dress code was simply a plain dark top with plain dark skirt/trousers.

Clarinet1 · 16/06/2023 11:03

Well I don’t think anyone would want to see my sternotomy scar or I might be tempted!

Whatkindofuckeryisthis · 16/06/2023 09:50

Male bashing again ffs!
Wearing boxers whilst preparing food is just odd. However out and about I don’t see the issue with a man being topless! Women can wear tiny crop tops and hot pants and no one would batter an eye lid, men can’t exactly wear a little top like us women! Some people make or female dress inappropriate for the location but this isn’t just males!!

I really would love it if people stopped saying 'batter an eyelid'! It's BAT an eyelid. Something people do all the time is bat their eyelids if something unusual or shocking happens, hence the expression 'Oh I saw someone do XYZ today and didn't bat an eyelid!' (As in, it didn't bother/shock/alarm me).

Nobody in the whole history of mankind has ever 'battered' an eyelid because something shocked them. Unless I am missing some information out regarding some obscure cannibalistic tribe who likes to eat deep-fried eyelids, I suppose.

Flocider · 16/06/2023 11:05

Women have a far greater choice of summer clothes then men, hardly ever see any walking around in just boxers- especially not in fast food shops.

SapphireSeptember · 16/06/2023 11:07

Where I work allows shorts in the summer, I've finally caved and bought some lightweight cotton ones! They must be dark, and either tailored, denim or the type workman wear, and of appropriate length. There was some sexism, because women had to wear ones that covered their knees at one point (why women's knees were considered more inappropriate than men's is beyond me.)

But yes, I hate sweaty man flesh everywhere! Covering up in the heat is better, because you heat up when the sun hits your skin. Wearing loose clothes made of natural fibers is the best thing.

Freefall212 · 16/06/2023 11:07

If he had an apron on, he might not have just been working the till. He might have also been in the kitchen. Seems odd he was in his boxers. More likely he had shorts on.

Many girls are in tiny strapless or thin strapped tops that really are not trapping heat or adding to any temperature control issue! There aren't many clothes for guys that are similar to crop tops, bandeaus, or triangle bikini tops. Guys usually have the option of a t shirt or a full length wide strap tank top. And they don't relly have booty shorts and tiny short lycra shorts - they are in heay material longer shorts. A lot more material and coverage in the guys clothes than the girls most of the time.

Hobert · 16/06/2023 11:10

You're actually cooler when your clothes wick sweat away from your body

Correct, that's why it's safest to be naked when walking in the snow.

IheartNiles · 16/06/2023 11:16

I wish everyone would cover up a bit more. It’s not nice walking around town and seeing all these moobs, arse cheeks, crusty feet.

gannett · 16/06/2023 11:18

Scattered thoughts about this strange post.

A kebab shop staffed by 16-year-olds - my expectations would be low all round in the first place.

OP noticed the boy was under-dressed when he turned round - so was he topless? If so you'd have seen before he turned round.

I highly doubt he was wearing his boxers. Some short sports shorts can look a bit like boxers from a glance, which is presumably all the OP had.

Even if he was, apron + boxers is a perfectly acceptable double layer for a kitchen.

DP sometimes cooks in apron + boxers, I greatly appreciate every aspect of that. No chest or underarm hair goes where it shouldn't because men don't actually constantly moult.

OP has no idea whether the girl was uncomfortable or what discussions they had beforehand.

I have no issue either with women in booty shorts or men topless in the summer. I've been running this week in sports bra + short shorts, much more functional. People don't exist for my viewing pleasure - if I don't like the look of their bodies, I'm free to look away (silently, no tutting or signs of disapproval). I'm not above admiring them discreetly if I do like what I see.

LillyoftheMountain · 16/06/2023 11:19

Why are you policing what women wear? We don’t need shamed for choosing to cover up!

Megifer · 16/06/2023 11:23

I think its about the same. I've seen loads of young girls with their camel toes flapping about in those skin tight all in one things that they are all wearing now 😂😂

(I'm jealous that I can't get away with wearing stuff like that now)

listsandbudgets · 16/06/2023 11:27

YANBU

There was man doing yoga in the park the other day. Admittedly he was not entirely nude but watching a man do yoga in just a thong was not what I wanted to see when I was walking my dog at 8am - it didn't leave much to the imagination when he bent down with his legs wide open. That said I suppose he did have a well toned body and his exhibitionist streak was being fuelled by an audience of shocked middle age women and their dogs Grin

RoyalGala · 16/06/2023 11:27

I’ve seen more women in little clothing than I have men this summer. I haven’t seen a single man yet with his t shirt off but plenty of girls/women in crops tops and small shorts. I saw 3 young ladies at the beach wearing thongs for swim wear. The title is misleading, the young lad wasn’t nude.

oldwhyno · 16/06/2023 11:30

Maybe just shorts, not boxer shorts. If you couldn't see the fly at the front because of the apron, it'd be easy to make a false assumption.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/06/2023 11:32

I don’t generally get take out anyway so not something that would bother me but in general I really don’t see this as a man/woman issue. I see lots of young girls out and about every day in very small shorts and crop tops. It’s hot, what’s the problem?
saw the first topless woman on our local beach the other day, too. With climate change, I think we’re all going to have to get a bit more comfortable with exposed skin.

Do you feel the same when you see an overweight woman in a crop top or bikini? Or is it just men you fat shame?

LlynTegid · 16/06/2023 11:40

It's not nudity, however, I think that there should be equality on this, in that where it is acceptable for a man to be without a top on, it should be acceptable for a woman. Which means men covering up more.
