To hate DH playing video games in bed with me next to him??

PegEggg · 12/06/2023 22:23

Just that really.

DH plays his Switch next to me in bed at bedtime. He turns down the sound if I ask (he does huff about it) and sometimes will put headphones on if I say the weird zapping sounds are keeping me up...but even with no sound on it annoys me so much. I can still hear the buttons and him sighing if he loses or whatever.

I get the ick.

He says I'm being very unreasonable. I like to read and he says its the same and im being unfair. I just find it so irritating.

AIBU?

Why is it worse than reading?

Soproudoflionesses · 12/06/2023 22:24

In what world is you reading the same as him playing computer games?
I would hate this too op.

How is it not?

Because you can hear the button presses, and they're constant. It's not like turning a page. The Switch in particular has extremely clicky buttons.

I'm a gamer too and this would drive me insane. He needs to keep the games out of the bedroom.

If your reading keeps him awake, I'd take that out of the bedroom too.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 12/06/2023 22:28

Nightmare. Would hate that. YANBU OP

Chasingadvice · 12/06/2023 22:28

I'd cause a war over this

Orchidgal · 12/06/2023 22:28

YANBU. I find gaming ick full stop, but even if I didn’t, gaming in bed with all the clicky buttons would be infuriating.

Sunnydaysareuponus · 12/06/2023 22:29

Is he a teenager?

cultkid · 12/06/2023 22:29

Urgh that's so annoying and childish

I hate screens and especially the sound of the reels etc in bed

Tell him to go sit on the sofa he is disturbing you

GoldDuster · 12/06/2023 22:29

Tell him his foreplay needs work.

Groutyonehereagain · 12/06/2023 22:30

It would drive me NUTS.

Hoolihan · 12/06/2023 22:30

My son sometimes plays his Xbox in the same room as me when I'm working - he has headphones but the noise of the controller click clacking grates on my every last nerve. I would HATE this OP, sympathies.

QueSyrahSyrah · 12/06/2023 22:31

Unless he's really thrashing about and huffing and puffing I don't see the big issue.

DH sometimes plays on the switch in bed (with headphones) while I read, and he doesn't disturb me at all, no difference to when he's reading himself.

If he is playing with no physical or verbal self control he can go play elsewhere surely?

Hugasauras · 12/06/2023 22:32

Ha, husband and I would be both playing together on our matching SwitchesGrin. But the fact it's gaming or whatever is irrelevant, whatever it is it's annoying you/keeping you from relaxing because it's disturbing in some way. I do feel a bit sorry for him though, as I really enjoy playing it in bed and would be a bit sad if I wasnt able to! But YANBU to find it annoying. Maybe find a compromise?

KateJohns · 12/06/2023 22:32

He has 2 choices, play it downstairs or sleep alone from now on.

I love games, but there's no way I'd tolerate having the constant click of buttons and shoulder triggers etc
If someone can't imagine what it's like, imagine someone tapping their finger nails on something wooden in a random pattern for an hour.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 12/06/2023 22:34

It’s not a quiet, in bed activity, that you can do when someone is trying to sleep or relax, is it?

QueSyrahSyrah · 12/06/2023 22:34

DH is playing sitting beside me right now in fact, so I deliberately listened for a minute.

If I'm concentrating I can hear the buttons now and then but they're not 'clicking'. Ours is a switch lite, I don't know if the full size is the same.

Globules · 12/06/2023 22:34

XH used to read in bed. Didn't matter if it was the ereader or a book, the noise of him reading kept me awake. He refused to stop, so I got ear plugs.

You can't criticise him if you're conducting an activity in bed too. Either you both pursue your own interests in bed or neither of you do. You can't have it both ways.

Hugasauras · 12/06/2023 22:38

Well, Switches don't have noisy buttons really. But I think once you've got it in your head that it's loud and awful there's no coming back from it!

I've just pressed some buttons on my Switch though and I wouldn't say they were particularly disruptive. Not like mashing a full controller with rumble pack, etc. Kind of like tapping on a phone to type a message level of noise.

romdowa · 12/06/2023 22:40

I'm in bed now playing my switch while my husband reads 🤣 he could be the one playing the switch tomorrow night then. Its not something to get upset about. It's his way of relaxing, what harm is he doing?

AnObserverInThisDarkWorld · 12/06/2023 22:42

You read in bed.

If you want to complain about him gaming in bed then he can complain about that. Pages make a noise as they turn. You might make noises in reaction to what's happening. There's still light on.

Set a time limit, "OK I'll read and you can play for half an hour in bed and then all lights off". Use your own headphones if the noise is really so bad

deepspace9 · 12/06/2023 22:45

Cannot believe people would compare playing a computer game to reading a book. We are doomed 🙈. What is wrong with people!!

OP this would annoy me too!

Hotandverybothered · 12/06/2023 22:48

How old ? My teenagers stopped playing on consoles when they went to Uni apart from youngest during lockdown!!

Well, why not? Both are creative pursuits done as a hobby. Games are a storytelling medium, just like books. There are good games and bad games, good books and bad books. Games can be just as immersive as books. They are both just forms of media.

I happen to work in publishing as an editor and some days have had my absolute fill of books as I've been editing them all day, so I'd rather play my Switch in bed than read!

Possibly my favourite MN comment of the night. Brilliant.
