To ask if you've ever been arrested, and what for?

With Sturgeon being arrested this afternoon, my friends were discussing this and surprised that some had been arrested. Included for protesting and also driving offences, but one also for fraud (acquitted) and one for shoplifting (dropped).

Anyone else?

I've never been arrested and assumed most haven't been!

No I haven’t. None of my family or friends have either.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/06/2023 17:28

Not so far.

I have spent a lot of time in prisons (working and volunteering)! And I need a clean record for work.

Newusernameaug · 11/06/2023 17:29

I haven’t but I’ve always wanted to be, but equally not something I’m going to try and make happen! It would need to be for something justified, like womens rights or something 😂

Plipplopdrop · 11/06/2023 17:29

I stole a cadbury's creme egg when I was 15, from a superdrug shop. Shop assistant called the police who came very quickly and cornered me in the shop, took me into the backroom to go through my bag and then carted me off to the police station where my very pregnant mother had to drive to collect me.

I ended up with a police warning on my record, which prevented me age 18 to work with Camp America which had been my dream and instead I did an entirely different gap year before uni, and actually completely changed the course of my life Grin

Googlecotseolk · 11/06/2023 17:29

Yes, taking drugs whilst raving in the 90's, leaving an illegal festival, went to Crown court

Plipplopdrop · 11/06/2023 17:30

I'm the only person I know who has ever been arrested, and look like the least likely out of my friendship group too.
Police record said
Crime: "theft"
Occupation: "schoolgirl"

beethecrackon24995 · 11/06/2023 17:33

Yes. Drug related

TizerorFizz · 11/06/2023 17:33

646,292 arrests between April 20/March 21. Lots of that was in lockdown! The police like arresting people. Met arrests most. Never been arrested. Don’t know anyone who has. We don’t get near anything that might provoke arrest though.

Kazzyhoward · 11/06/2023 17:37

No, and I don't know anyone who has either, neither friends, family, neighbours, etc.

I used to be in the police in the 80s, and I'd say 99% of arrests I knew about were "regulars" who were getting arrested on a habitual basis - always the same people, always wasting vast amounts of police time/resources only to either not get as far as court, or if they did, they'd get let off with probation or stupidly lenient sentences, etc., and we knew we'd see them again shortly, which we did. It was very demotivating to know we were just going through the motions for no reason, other than getting them off the streets for a few hours!

LakieLady · 11/06/2023 17:38

Cultivation of cannabis, in 1976. The plants weren't even mine, they were my flatmate's.

The police asked me if I knew what the plants were and I admitted that I did. It would have been hard to deny, given that there was a fuck-off "legalise cannabis" poster on the staircase, and a book on how to grow your own weed on the dining table.

I got a fine, iirc it was £25, which was less than half a week's wages at the time.

PickledMuffin · 11/06/2023 17:38

@Plipplopdrop 😳 wow! that seems OTT reaction in my opinion but i guess they did what they thought was necessary!

Mybusyday · 11/06/2023 18:25

No but many years ago 2 policemen knocked on the window of my car and asked me to put my clothes back on and to drive off when myself and my DP got a bit carried away after retuning from a party…😬

Lostinplaces · 11/06/2023 18:27

My dad was arrested in the 90’s for handling stolen goods. He bought a camera off a bloke in the pub. The charges were ultimately dropped.

cryinglaughing · 11/06/2023 18:32

No but I would have been had I not voluntarily attended the station.

Bound over to keep the peace.
Lost my shit when I found my longterm boyfriend in bed with another woman 😭

All turned out for the best. Moved up North and never looked back.

Ilovebountybars · 11/06/2023 18:49

No never. The closest contact I have ever had with the police was when I asked an officer for directions. He pulled out google maps on his phone and told me 😁

OneRingToRuleThemAll · 11/06/2023 18:56

I was arrested for "common assault" which was me pushing my way out of a large crowd of people when I felt trapped.

I was aged 20. I was diagnosed with autism at age 32 and looking back on it I was in meltdown.

Its still on my record as cautions are no longer spent.

I'm not sure I'd want to be arrested but being deported is on my bucket list. After my failed attempt in Qatar 15 years ago.

Sandra1984 · 11/06/2023 19:03

I was arrested For prostitution, in the US. I was not a prostitute but was taking pictures in a bordello for a documentary project and the place got raided by anti vice squad police. I was put in a van with the women working there. Spent 3 days in jail. I had to hire an expensive lawyer to proof I was as not a prostitute. My charges got dropped but it was one of the worst experience of my life.

getmyselfarrested · 11/06/2023 19:05

Yes but only actually been in a cell once.
Drunk and disorderly and breach of the peace. It genuinely wasn't my fault.
I've been temporarily detained at protests but not arrested.
I've also been assaulted and kettled by police several times.

You wouldn't think this looking at my current life but when friends get to know me they're less surprised.

I was threatened with it. I cried. It worked.

TBF it was only a paperwork issue and I had every right to be there.

LoonyLois · 11/06/2023 19:09

This is completely outing to anyone who knows me but what the hell!!

My first husband cheated on me, and I attacked the OW. She was an absolute cow to me, told me that it was my own fault he cheated and stuff like that. One day she parked outside my in-laws because she wanted to talk to my then husband. I went out and she looked the other way, I just saw red and couldn’t stop myself. I launched myself at her and literally couldn’t stop.

Even though I had records of all the harassment she’d done to me I was the one who got arrested and charged. She was fine, I’m an absolute weakling who has no upper body strength at all, and my ex pulled me off of her, but I now have a record for it

Whiskyinajar · 11/06/2023 19:13

Not me but a friend of mine was in her teens. She went through a phase (as she calls it) of shoplifting.
Eventually she got caught and she says the police shoved her in the cells "to consider things" a bit.

She stopped and never did it again (approaching 50 now 😁)

familyissues12345 · 11/06/2023 19:18

I got arrested for scratching my ex's car (I didn't). It was the most surreal experience, I got arrested at home, taken off by two lovely police officers who once I'd been let off they then drove me home giving me advice on how to handle my useless nasty ex.

He had me arrested due to jealousy, unfortunately he cocked up so the police knew I was innocent as soon as they started interviewing me
