With Sturgeon being arrested this afternoon, my friends were discussing this and surprised that some had been arrested. Included for protesting and also driving offences, but one also for fraud (acquitted) and one for shoplifting (dropped).

Anyone else?

Nope. I did go to London and protest against the poll tax when I was a student and a police officer pushed me off the pavement and called me ‘a piece of labour scum’ - an MP saw it and I twisted my ankle - he complained on my behalf and the police officer was made to apologise in writing 😂

Betsybee88 · 11/06/2023 19:25

No I haven't but my mum has, she broke the glass panel of a ex boyfriends back door through continuous knocking after she'd discovered that he'd been cheating. I think she was around 18 and charges were dropped.
I actually love telling my older kids this cautionary tale, you'd never presume she'd of ever been arrested to look at her.

Mygrandadwasmywingman · 11/06/2023 19:41

My fil-for handing stolen goods (he was guilty-also young and stupid)
He ended up doing 6 months after being married to mil for less than a year

Dd and ds-they went on a shoplifting spree as young teens
Got caught stealing in whsmiths with a load of kids books and sweets
8 hours in a police cell, charged, out on bail and a warning
Both have never done it since and both are now law abiding adults

Dp-he had a bad break up with his ex wife-shes pulled every trick in the book to try and break us up
We hadn't been together long, when he went round with a card and money for his dds birthday
She went looney, attacked him, ripped the card apart and hit him, before phoning the police to say he'd hit her-I then got a string of gloating messages on sm,bragging about what she'd done
She was very lucky not to be arrested herself as a neighbours cctv had caught everything
Charges dropped

My ds-he told his then girlfriend he didn't want to be with her anymore
She hit the roof and rang the police to say he'd hit her
The police where running a campaign against dv at the time so arrested him
She went mental-phoning me and my family (im nc with them) endlessly and spreading tales claiming we'd all said this and that, then running back to the other party telling more tales and had herself admitted to hospital with a 'breakdown' (complete with selfies on sm)
She also walked out after 4 days when it came to light he'd been at work and then went drinking with his friend afterwards at the time she claimed he'd thumped her (if he had,he would have killed her-shes tiny and he's built like a brick shithouse)
All their mutual friends stood by him (they didn't like her-i never met her-every single one has told me she was a liar and very controlling) and she was frozen out-she fucked off to Turkey a fortnight later and married some bloke there before coming back to the UK pregnant and now her husband refuses to speak to her (I've had the sm messages from her mother blaming me for all this)
He's best off out of that one!

A friend of mine (she's now dead) was arrested more than once for standing up for women's rights in the 60's
She also stood up for gay rights and against wars around that time
She regretted nothing

Never been arrested myself, even when I fell in with a bad crowd as a teen

dropthevipers · 11/06/2023 19:57

Yes, once when me and my mate accidentally broke into a Ministry of Defence research and development base for weapons and explosives (come on, we've all done that once? Right?) Spent about five hours being questioned by some charming fellows from special branch (and they really were-couldst have been nicer) until released without charge. won't be doing that again though.

FatalKittehCharms · 11/06/2023 19:58

Does British Transport Police count? 🤣

It was when I was very young. I was mortified and never did anything wrong again.

I also set off some alarms in a clothing shop once, turns out I’d mixed up a shop item that I hadn’t purchased with my own clothes by mistake and it set the alarm off. That would have been mortifying too.

Lieslies · 11/06/2023 20:10

I've known a few people.

1 was arrested and bound over during the 80s miner's strike.
An in-law arrested and sent to prison for 3 months for a driving offence.
Got introduced to a friend's husband's brother when he'd just got out of prison for manslaughter (that was a bit of a shocker!)

Completely understand the OW ones. If my job didn't depend on a clear DBS, I'd have been round there raising hell last year. And as ex was packing up his stuff I handed him his cricket bat and paused for a long moment as I weighed up the chances of him reporting me if I gave him a good crack in the shins with it. Decided better.

drstranger · 11/06/2023 20:31

17, writ off my moms bfs car at the time, in my defence I did call the police myself, I was more scared to be at home when my mom came back and saw what i had done 😂

drstranger · 11/06/2023 20:34

Oh I also got drove home the next day by a policeman who was asking me if I go out to the pubs, when I said no because I'm too young he told me I should get a fake id 😐

Plipplopdrop · 11/06/2023 17:29

I stole a cadbury's creme egg when I was 15, from a superdrug shop. Shop assistant called the police who came very quickly and cornered me in the shop, took me into the backroom to go through my bag and then carted me off to the police station where my very pregnant mother had to drive to collect me.

I ended up with a police warning on my record, which prevented me age 18 to work with Camp America which had been my dream and instead I did an entirely different gap year before uni, and actually completely changed the course of my life Grin

Wow! What did you end up doing? What a sliding doors moment!

tonystarksrighthand · 11/06/2023 20:50

Yes. Drunk

Sigh ....

LaDamaDeElche · 11/06/2023 20:57

Yes, for smoking weed in Hyde Park with my ex husband. I got de arrested later though and let off with no caution or anything.

Poppasocks · 11/06/2023 21:02

I haven't but DH was arrested in Germany during his gap year for pissing on a police car... (he was drunk I should add!)

Tealknittedjumpers · 11/06/2023 21:14

Yes, age 17, but I don't want to say what for, because knowing my luck the troll hunters will use it against me when I forget to name change asking for advice on something more wholesome, at a later date. Got a caution and it was wiped when I was 18 so I was still able to get into America years later. Luckily I did it at 17 and not a year later. The afternoon in the cell was enough to put me off any kind of illegal activity for life.

SomersetDreams · 11/06/2023 21:41

A company demolished our home, made us homeless, and were 100 per cent liable.

I visited them to ask for politely help numerous times, the last time they called the police and said I was 'tresspassing'!! GoT taken away in the van and talked to. Police agreed that the company were 'bastards' though - their words not mine :)

rainbowsandrainclouds · 11/06/2023 21:43

Name changed for this because...obviously haha.

Yes, I've been arrested. It's actually been several years since it happened. They came to my house and I was arrested and taken to the police station to a cell, was questioned for a while then charged and taken back to the cell to spend the night. Went to court the next day, pled not guilty, went home, and it has been a complete shit show since then. Multiple trips to court. Delays, delays, delays and other stuff. The actual experience of being arrested and spending the night in a cell then the trip to court the next day was all deeply distressing. The whole situation has had a massive impact on my mental health and wellbeing.

There still hasn't been a trial and nobody I know has ever asked me about it although I know some of them will know.

Curlyshabtree · 11/06/2023 21:43

Yes. Spent the night in the cells after being nicked for kiting (using stolen cheques). Ironically arrested in a police station as I went to get info on then BF who’d been nicked for burglary. Luckily I’d left my weed at home. Got off with caution. I am now very law abiding. BF’s case was thrown out of court. We split and he died of an OD years later.

Being in a cell is horrible.

AngeloMysterioso · 11/06/2023 21:52

Never been arrested, but was very kindly given a lift home by the police a few times as a teenager when I decided I’d rather spend my cab fare on a few more drinks and walk 5 miles home… had a great time explaining that to my Mum!

Shallwesay2pm · 11/06/2023 21:54

I've been arrested twice for aggravated tresspass in the 1990's at 2 different road protests, one the charges got dropped the other I went to magistrates court and got a £150 fine .

Billyhargrovesmullet · 11/06/2023 22:03

Shoplifting, twoc, burglary. Only guilty of shoplifting. I’m an addict now in recovery for nearly 25 years

Laiste · 11/06/2023 22:35

I haven't, but DH has.

Back when we first got to know each other he told me he'd been arrested, the 'share your murky past' stage around date 8 or 9, like you do. He'd been found with cannabis in his car at 18 ish.

A couple of years ago we were chatting about something police station related and i casually wondered how many times he'd been arrested. I thought the one or maybe two.

He said, and i quote: ''Erm - i can't really remember''

Me - 😳You can't remember ... ?
Him - yes well, you know how it is ...
Me - No! Not really! Take a rough guess then ...
Him - Ooooh, er, 10 or 11.
Me - <spits out coffee> 😵Ten or eleven !!!?
Him - uh huh.

The up and down of it is as a teen he was known by the police for weed ect. and they liked to stop his car whenever they spotted it and search it. And find stuff. There was a raid in a squat he was sleeping in, there was a few kufuffles outside clubs and one big misunderstanding outside his house ...

He's a lovely unassuming 40 something, you'd never guess!
Blush

Once for attempting to pervert the course of justice. Long story but basically I was just an idiot and didn't think through the implications of the text I sent to someone. CID arrived at my student halls and I offered them tea and coffee. They then said they were there to arrest me. I was 😲 The police in the custody suite were lovely, we were all chatting away, then they asked me to empty my pockets. I laughed thinking they were joking. Umm..no. on the booking board thing they wrote my name and then just "pervert" which we joked about (I had a mini set of handcuffs on the keys in my pocket)

Cells were the worst, I tried not to think about what bodily fluids some of the graffiti was written in! I smoked continuously as I could keep my cigarettes but no lighter.

Eventually it all got dropped as they realised I was just an idiot who got involved in something that was more serious than I realised. Thank goodness! I've behaved well (mostly) since then as I never want to be in a cell again.

Notxyourxaveragexmum · 11/06/2023 23:31

Well done 👍

RightOnTheEdge · 11/06/2023 23:50

I've never been arrested.

I asked everyone at work this question once because I was having a conversation with someone and was really shocked when they said they'd been arrested. So I did a survey 😂

It turned out quite a lot of them had and not ones I would ever have imagined! It was eye opening.
Mostly it seemed to be for being drunk when younger.
