Today in tesco carpark loading my shopping into the car with my teen daughter a lady n the row of cars behind me exclaimed loudly while helping her elderly mother out of the car "I can't believe everyone using the disabled spaces are actually disabled, look they are leaving now should we move" she continued talking but I couldn't here but didn't stop staring at me.

For clarity I have MS I usually walk with a stick but in tesco I use trolley for balance. I drive my own car and have the audacity to go out in public and do my own shopping. I have had comments before (even one man asking me to show him my blue badge!!) today just hit deep, I don't know why maybe because I was with my daughter and didn't want to make a scene.

It's taken me years to come to terms having MS and I held out for a long time not getting a blue badge. I have been medically Retired from a job I adored and didn't pass probationary period on another due to sick leave. I am currently unemployed and looks like I will be for the foreseeable as I'm so up and down healthwise. Single mum to teens/young adults and never seen myself ever being a benefits claimer, worked from i was 15, further education, married and had kids (before divorce) it gets me down daily my life isn't what I worked so hard for.

People don't realise and or maybe don't care how hurtful a passing comment can be when you are struggling.

Sorry for the post, somehow it's been carthitic letting it go in the ether of MN lol

Well said @Quveas

I was temporarily disabled, (accident). Also I have a bladder problem which means I prefer to use the disabled toilet facilities. I do get some odd looks but no one has ever challenged me. If they do ,however, I plan to offer to describe the three gruesome operations which I needed to get me to my current state of health.

SweetBirdsong · 08/06/2023 21:21

@IamAlso4eels

Except it's exactly what you said, your little apostrophes around the word 'miraculous' are simply you doubling down on your ableism.

Exactly this. ^

Blah blah blah. Read through my post history, I dare you, then tell me how horrible I am. My child isn't physically disabled, so no need for a bb.

It is a long and difficult process applying for a BB. You need lots of supporting evidence from specialists and even then you might get refused first time round and have to get yet more evidence and apply again. I have done 2 applications for family members and they have to be posted, not collected, where I live.

LadyKenya · 08/06/2023 21:25

Why does someone always feel the need to talk about BB fraud on these threads anyway? That is not what the thread is about. It is about some people feeling the need to make unwanted comments to people who they feel somehow should not be in possession of a BB. It is a pity that people feel entitled to make such comments anyway. The BB in the car window should, and for myself is explanation enough.

jannier · 08/06/2023 21:26

I'd have waved my badge at her and flipped the finger assuming you were displaying it.

fiftyandfat · 08/06/2023 21:27

The people I get angry with are the ones who park in disabled spaces when they don't have a BB, meaning that the people who are entitled to use the spaces can't find one.

Why do people do this, do they see themselves as defenders of disabled people when actually they're attacking people with disabilities? YANBU they need to fuck off and mind their own business.

God no, they don’t care anything about the disabled. They’re just pissed off someone is getting something they feel they should be getting - even when they don’t qualify for it either. See also: benefit bashing.

Yeah OK, whatever. I was simply responding to a poster who said that bb fraud happens. And it does, whether you lot believe it or not. And calling me names, well, that says a lot about you. You have no idea who I am or what I've been through. I have some disabilities myself. I was speaking the truth of what I witnessed with my own eyes, and if that makes me a bigot then so be it.

This shows even more that you are lying, because blue badges aren’t just awarded for physical disabilities.

I am not benefit bashing, but are you really that blind (sorry if you are) or daft to realise that benefit fraud does happen???

Sigh. I mean she can get in and out of a car by herself without being parked in a disabled bay.

Trinxsy · 08/06/2023 21:34

My one year old has a blue badge. She has a brain injury and at the moment, has no obvious physical disabilities. She's unlikely to ever walk but we don't know yet.

However, she has bulky medical equipment that we always need to carry with us in case she needs something.

I had to send lots of proof to get her BB. It is never used without her in the car. I have had many comments. She's a baby! Why would I lie to get a BB for my baby? Hmm

FFSFF is getting a lot of comments, rather unfairly, in that it is true you used to be able to fill in the form, TAKE it in to your council offices and either collect your badge in person or have someone collect it for you.

I've had my BB for nearly 20 years and until just before the pandemic my husband collected my badge from Glasgow City Council offices.

My latest badge was sent out by post

Clafoutie · 08/06/2023 21:37

I’m so sorry this happened to you OP. Really, the ignorance and downright nastiness of some people knows no bounds. I hope you will soon be able to put them from your mind, and feel the support of all the people behind you on here. Take care and sending a virtual hug. Flowers

Dobbyismyabsolutefav · 08/06/2023 21:37

It must be so hard OP dealing with these idiots. My friend's DD gets a lot of grieve parking in a BB space. The reason, she is a young female in her early 20's and people assume that she is not disabled. If they actually let her get out of the car they would see that she has cerebral palsy and walks with crutches.
