Does drinking a bottle of wine, alone and at home on a school night, indicate a drinking problem?

Or am I over-reacting? I'm just concerned about a friend who causally told me this earlier...

Depends if its every night or a one off.

stargirl1701 · 07/06/2023 16:30

Once a year, no.

Every evening, yes.

As a one off, nothing wrong with it.

Doing it every night would suggest a problem

80skid · 07/06/2023 16:31

It sounds lovely! But as said previously, it's the regularity and "need" which is key

Eh?!

44PumpLane · 07/06/2023 16:31

Every night it's a problem.....as a one off no issue.

Cara671244 · 07/06/2023 16:31

As above depends if its regular or every now and again

Eh?

Azealeasinbloom · 07/06/2023 16:32

do you have other concerns OP? Is your friend showing signs of being unhappy, and alcohol is self medication - or was she celebrating something/ drowning her sorrows for a particular reason ?

What a stupid comment! I have the odd glass of wine, I'm in no way cool

mindutopia · 07/06/2023 16:33

No, definitely not, it’s 3 (albeit large) drinks. Lots of people drink that much or more at a work function on a ‘school night’.

Drinking that much or more every or most nights though isn’t healthy and would be more problematic. As a one off or on occasion sort of thing, completely normal. I say this as a (now sober) alcoholic.

Emmamoo89 · 07/06/2023 16:33

Are one off is fine!

Pennn · 07/06/2023 16:33

The obsession with wine drives me absolutely up the wall

CaloundraBlues · 07/06/2023 16:33

So if it's every school night that's 5 bottles a week, I'd say that was fairly excessive

Who shat in your handbag @Pennn ?

Agree with PP's, totally depends on frequency and 'need'. Totally fine now and again for winding down.

WhatsThatIHear · 07/06/2023 16:34

There will be loads of people who come on and say it’s no big deal, however it is excessive.
If your friend feels the need to drink the whole bottle rather than a glass or two, I.e can’t stop drinking once they have started, then yes, they have a problem.
The recommended units per week are 14, some strong bottles of wine have that many in them.
6 units or more in one go , so a whole bottle, is classed as binge drinking. Binge drinking regularly is a problem.

RedRosette2023 · 07/06/2023 16:34

I do this on occasion. Mostly a weekend.

loobylou10 · 07/06/2023 16:35

@Pennn who's got an obsession with wine? What a strange reaction

MakesMeFeelSad · 07/06/2023 16:36

I usually have a few drinks on a Thursday night to celebrate the end of my working week 🤷‍♀️

CornishGem1975 · 07/06/2023 16:36

I could easily nail a bottle of wine myself watching a film with dinner etc and I don't have a drinking problem. But not every night (well I could but I don't).

I probably drink more than I should, but it's not the same thing.

Mushroo · 07/06/2023 16:37

Like others have said, depends on the reason and the frequency.

A bottle is 3 large glasses, so a large amount but over the course of an evening with dinner not off the chart levels. It’s an amount that could easily be drunk out for dinner with friends or at a pub with no one really batting an eye.

megletthesecond · 07/06/2023 16:37

One off, unwise.
Regularly, she needs some help.

TheMurderousGoose · 07/06/2023 16:38

every night - a problem

once a week - not a problem
