Does drinking a bottle of wine, alone and at home on a school night, indicate a drinking problem?

Or am I over-reacting? I'm just concerned about a friend who causally told me this earlier...

The issue lies in what happens if the person doesn't get to have that bottle of wine. And does the drinking affect the person's relationships with other people, ability to get up and go to work, overall anxiety levels etc
There are levels of problematic drinker, and the regularity and amount a person is drinking is just one factor.

One off, unwise.
Regularly, she needs some help.

why is it unwise?

Who is your obsessed with wine? You?
I like wine. I like water. I drink more water than I drink wine. Am I obsessed with water?
Anyway… as others have said, as an irregular occurrence, I wouldn’t be too concerned. If it’s happening regularly, or is happening alongside other issues, I would be. And you say ‘school night’, but I assume she’s not actually at school?!

Context is everything.
Every night yes excessive
Once a year not excessive

Maybe you need to lay off the wine?!

OP I would be concerned too. I think a whole bottle is a lot for solo drinking and I’m about as far from puritanical as you can be. A good bottle wine is definitely a social thing for me. Alone I might have a decent sized glass but it’s not the same so I’d stick a stopper in it and save the rest for tomorrow.

Why is drinking a bottle of wine as a one off unwise?

StrugglingWeight · 07/06/2023 16:42

As a one off no
Regularly as a pattern, maybe. If cant be done without yes.

But with that little information itsnimpossible to say if that person has a drinking problem

3luckystars · 07/06/2023 16:43

I’m not sure there is anything you can do about it even if it IS every night.

Whenwillitallmakesense · 07/06/2023 16:46

If you believe anything you watch on TV - whether it's a soap, film, drs series - everyone is in the pub every night having a glass or two. Business(persons), detectives, lawyers will have a few stiff shorts or large wines after a stressful day. Everyome seems to open a bottle when cooking dinner, then another when eating. TV seems to normalise drinking every night. But in reality, it's a slippery slope if you're home alone every night cracking open a bottle. Once or twice a week is ok, in my opinion. Just watch it doesn't creep up to 3, 4, 5 nights, then two bottles because one isn't enough

OneTC · 07/06/2023 16:46

If you can drink a bottle of wine in a night, alone, it suggests it's not that irregular

BaronessEllarawrosaurus · 07/06/2023 16:47

I can drink a bottle of an evening, if for example it's been an early dinner and I've then sat and watched a film or on the phone to a friend for ages but normally a bottle will last 3-4 nights and I rarely open one.

A one off that's been mentioned because she's slightly shell shocked she drank it all is fine, casually mentioning she drinks a bottle every night and is shocked others don't then its an issue.

Grow up. She didn't say her friend was swigging from a bottle sitting on the pier with a cigarette in the other hand ffs. Who sees her at home? She hardly cares about looking cool.

Honestly, any wonder people find it hard to get help (if it is needed, not able to say for your friend OP) with friends like you making silly remarks like that!

qandp · 07/06/2023 16:50

Depends on the number of units in the bottle and when the last sip is finished, along with whether a car is driven in the morning.

A strong wine (14 units) would take 15 hours for the body to process. So if they finished drinking at 11pm potentially they're well over the limit on the 8.30am school run.

Fairislefandango · 07/06/2023 16:51

What are you on about. Some people like wine, some people like beer, some people are into fancy flavoured gin. It's not an obsession (unless you really are an alcoholic with a specific preference).

OP - once a month not a problem. Once a week - not great. Every day or most days - definitely a problem.

Fairislefandango · 07/06/2023 16:51

I can. But I rarely do.

No, definitely not, it’s 3 (albeit large) drinks. Lots of people drink that much or more at a work function on a ‘school night’.

Drinking that much or more every or most nights though isn’t healthy and would be more problematic. As a one off or on occasion sort of thing, completely normal. I say this as a (now sober) alcoholic.

Three large drinks?

It's one large drink, if you put it in a big enough glass!

But it's nine or ten units, and:

  • men and women are advised not to drink more than 14 units a week on a regular basis
  • spread your drinking over 3 or more days if you regularly drink as much as 14 units a week.

Many of us walk the school run.

What if she needed to take the kids to A and E?

Maligascar · 07/06/2023 16:54

I do find it sad that people “need” wine to relax/enjoy the weekend/enjoy a holiday etc

qandp · 07/06/2023 16:56

@DanceMonster not illegal to walk the school run while drunk so no worries from that perspective. However many people don't appreciate how long it takes to process alcohol so important to be aware of if driving.

Mushroo · 07/06/2023 16:56

Chowtime · 07/06/2023 16:54

What if she needed to take the kids to A and E?

This comes up all the time and makes no sense 😂

Firstly, how often does going to A&E happen that it’s even a consideration? I’ve never been to A+E in my life so I certainly don’t plan around it.

Given it would be an emergency (clue in the name) a taxi could be paid for.

What do you think people without cars do? Leave their children to suffer as they can’t possibly get to A+E without driving?
