Does drinking a bottle of wine, alone and at home on a school night, indicate a drinking problem?

Or am I over-reacting? I'm just concerned about a friend who causally told me this earlier...

Since when is a bottle of wine 3 glasses😮? That’s almost half a pint for one glass. Traditionally, a bottle is 6 standard glasses-and each glass is about 1.5 units. Is it the trend in drinking wine out of enormous balloons to blame?

A large glass of wine in a pub is a 250ml measure. A bottle is 750ml. Pretty easy maths there!

What if she needed to take the kids to A and E?

What if she did? Do you seriously live your life as a series of ‘what ifs’?

Depends on the frequency.

I once told colleagues that I had a few glass of this wine, while in a shop, as it’s so light and refreshing. Older colleague said “oh I never drink in secret” I told her it’s not a secret because I’ve told you.

I lived alone so she thought I was never allowed to drink at home, only in a pub with friends.

I love the taste and we love a glass with a nice meal. Nothing wrong with that and most adults appreciate a nice glass of wine (and its also ok if you dont).

I also know I wouldn’t do it every night as its not good for your health. So like everything in life, having everything in moderation is the key.

MaryJean87 · 07/06/2023 17:27

I do it sometimes, but I never have more than about 2 bottles a week. I don't think it's a problem unless it's every day or most days out the week.

Usually a bottle of wine is 750ml, and a large glass is 250ml (pub measure) so that makes three glasses

What?
What if the house caught fire?
What if the house sprung a leak?
What if she cut her hand off?

Alcohol dramatically increases a woman’s risk of breast cancer. Wine is to breast cancer as cigarette smoking is to lung or bladder cancer. There’s no safe amount.

Large glass in a pub is usually 250ml - 1/3 of a bottle and small is 175ml
Glasses did used to be 125ml at one time

Source - years of working in pubs and a brain that retains only useless information

Yes and legally you can ask to have a 125ml glass and the pub has to serve it. Why have the volumes become so large-not so long ago a ‘large’ was 175ml. No wonder we have a problem with alcohol in this country. When I visit France or Italy you don’t get 250ml unless it’s a carafe-no way would you be served it in a glass. I’m just a ruddy daddy-my daughter laughs at me when I tell her a bottle of wine is excessive.

Depends, is she doing it for enjoyment and can easily miss several days without issue, or is there a dependence? Does it impact her parenting? Is she still meeting her children’s needs, running a household etc?

This. And fatty liver. A bottle of wine in a night is a massive amount and a lot of ethanol for someone to metabolize, even if you don’t feel it the next day.

The obsession with wine drives me absolutely up the wall

Why? Surely what I choose to drink has no impact on your life!

I enjoy drinking wine - I buy decent wine by the case. I also enjoy gin, cognac, malt whiskey & whisky, and good ale but mainly drink wine at home.

I don’t think I’m cool - I’m a middle aged woman with eclectic taste.

Anyone who drinks every night has a problem.

anonymous98 · 07/06/2023 17:38

Depends on frequency. A one-off treat is fine. Every/most nights indicates a problem.

Not unless it interferes with your life in some way.

I did refrain when I had O Levels to take the next day, so I guess I still had some willpower at 15.

I let my self have 2 bottles of wine (or equivalent if I don't feel like wine) a week.

I don't have a booze problem, I have a self-control problem - if it's in the house I'll drink it (or eat it, I have the same reaction to biscuits), if it isn't, I won't - so it's easy to keep under control, I just don't buy it (I would never do a special trip to go and get some - it's literally an opportunity thing with me)

1 bottle of wine in an evening isn't a problem - I lived in expat locations for so long, that I wouldn't bat an eyelid at that amount, I wouldn't feel it then next day - or TBH feel anything more than a bit sleepy over the evening I drank it.

Mind you - I baulk at the idea of a 250ml glass - that is a LARGE glass. I do at least get up and down to pour myself smaller measures :D

Chypre · 07/06/2023 17:48

Does inhaling a "sharing" size bag of crisps, alone and at home on a school night, indicate a binge eating problem? Asking for a friend... Obviously laughing. Clear problem if it is done every night, not a problem if once a month.

If it's Blossom Hill - even if it's just once a year - that's criminal
