Does drinking a bottle of wine, alone and at home on a school night, indicate a drinking problem?

Or am I over-reacting? I'm just concerned about a friend who causally told me this earlier...

Firstly, how often does going to A&E happen that it’s even a consideration? I’ve never been to A+E in my life so I certainly don’t plan around it.

Same.

Why is drinking a bottle of wine as a one off unwise?

It's binge drinking which is bad for you.

Chowtime · 07/06/2023 16:54

What if she needed to take the kids to A and E?

Who says there are kids? Even if she has kids, their dad may be around. She could be a co-parent who has a "night off"

theemmadilemma · 07/06/2023 17:02

Most people couldn't (shouldn't be able to) manage a bottle to themselves without getting pissed.

If you aren't getting pissed it's because you're doing it so often that your tolerance is high.

So yes, to me that's suggestive of an issue.

If you can drink a bottle of wine in a night, alone, it suggests it's not that irregular

I can drink 2 bottles, plus shots on top
Drink about once a year. Always had a high alcohol tolerance

I've done it once at home but wouldn't say it was my best choice. Had a horrific day at work (emergency services) and came home, drank a full bottle of wine out the bottle in the bath

amluuui · 07/06/2023 17:05

Occasionally? Fine.

Every night? Not a great idea. I know the consequences of long-term heavy drinking. Some people seem to get away with it, but others don't. You may not find out until you're 60-ish.

(Personally, I'd be a miserable mess every day if I drank that much. I'd sleep badly, my skin would be awful and I'd be depressed and irritable. And that's just the obvious stuff.)

I do find it sad that people “need” wine to relax/enjoy the weekend/enjoy a holiday etc

Nothing wrong in relaxing with a glass of wine 🍷

2 glasses and I'm pretty tipsy but I have a massively low intolerance. My DP can drink a bottle with dinner and you'd barely notice.

Neither of us are regular drinkers. Alcohol affects everyone differently. Height, weight, metabolism, what you've eaten that day. How frequently you drink isn't the only factor

What if she needed to take the kids to A and E?

The same thing people without cars do?

StemStem · 07/06/2023 17:08

Yes.

MummyJ36 · 07/06/2023 17:13

Once in a blue moon? Nope. Although you’ll probably regret it the next day! But no judgement, I’m hardly teetotal. On a regular basis, every day, a few times a week etc. probably not a good idea and may be an indication they’re not coping well with life at the mo.

AndYou · 07/06/2023 17:14

I personally think drinking that much alone is an issue but I bet most don’t. As a one off very irregular event then fine if it’s quite frequent then it’s a problem.

The UK is full of functioning alcoholics in denial.

Oh for gods sake, this old chestnut. I'm a non driver, OP would have to improvise and get help like thousands of others do.

What if she needed to take the kids to A and E?

We only have one car and my DH takes it to work away most weeks. So she’d do what I would do if it was ever needed I guess. 10 years of parenting and it’s not happened yet though.

Willmafrockfit · 07/06/2023 17:15

they should have an alcohol free night to start

givemushypeasachance · 07/06/2023 17:15

I live alone and I'm not much for socialising, my close friends don't really drink anyway, so most of my drinking is - gasp - "ALONE". I eat alone and sleep alone and clean the bathroom alone as well for good measure. It would be weirder in my book to save my drinking for only when in the company of others. I don't drink to tolerate being with other people, I like the slight fuzziness of a G&T now and then and the taste of an IPA! I'm allowed to do that when I'm by myself, as I am most of the time.

Depends how often surely?

The obsession with wine drives me absolutely up the wall

Prosecco ok?

Summersizzle · 07/06/2023 17:20

My DH drinks a bottle of wine (at least) every night of the week. He thinks he doesn't have a problem!

MrsRachelDanvers · 07/06/2023 17:21

Since when is a bottle of wine 3 glasses😮? That’s almost half a pint for one glass. Traditionally, a bottle is 6 standard glasses-and each glass is about 1.5 units. Is it the trend in drinking wine out of enormous balloons to blame?

Really? I had a night in on my own last night. Rare treat! Movie, takeaway and a bottle of wine for one.

not had the opportunity for months, but still managed to polish that bottle off easily.

Sunshineishere1988 · 07/06/2023 17:22

Every single night - I would say yes. Even if shes just having it as she enjoys wine, that would be pretty terrible for her liver and health in general.

Relaxing on a Friday night with a bottle of wine or the odd glass in the week - no problem and I think most Mums enjoy wine after a busy week!

(Is it Friday yet?)😜

Nowdontmakeamess · 07/06/2023 17:23

Alcohol is a poison, so she’ll be doing a lot of damage to her body drinking that quantity every day.

Large glass in a pub is usually 250ml - 1/3 of a bottle and small is 175ml
Glasses did used to be 125ml at one time

Source - years of working in pubs and a brain that retains only useless information

What if she needed to take the kids to A and E?

It's not such a bad point. A and E, people manage with taxis etc, but I would be concerned about the age of the children who are at home. Drunk with a 10 year old? Not ideal, but not the end of the world.
Alone and drunk with a baby or a toddler? Poor parenting choice.
