To hate the trend of shops giving lower prices for ‘members’

Just give us lower prices without forcing everyone to carry cards or download apps (that glitch/not scan/no wifi in store).

Just wasted 30min of lunchtime in Boots only to realise my physical card is at home, so I would be charged more. Logged into Boots site and the number isn’t even on there - “we keep the last 3 digits hidden”.

Amazon Prime wins again.

Go on tell me how much you all love carrying cards/downloading apps for £1 off some foot peel socks.

I agree. Tbh I don't even mind boots so much as that's just points isn't it (unless its recently changed)? It's Tesco and Sainbury's that I refuse to shop at anymore unless I absolutely cannot go without it. I've been quite successful with the Tesco boycott (it's my most local shop and I was in every couple of days) and a few weeks ago when Sainsbos started the whole "pay £8.50 for a jar of coffee members pay £4 for" I added them to my list too.

I don't want to be forced into it. Points / rewards etc are a bonus, but the way they're doing it now feels more like blackmail. Left your phone in the car? PAY DOUBLE!! Nope. I'm not playing their game. Ram your £8 jar of coffee up your hoop.

horseymum · 06/06/2023 15:40

It's also discrimination against those who can't afford a smartphone/ don't have email/ homeless/learning disability/ dementia and find it too complex. Just have fair prices for everyone

BonnieGlasses · 06/06/2023 15:41

Yes, I hate it too. Was in Boots the other day, the item I wanted was £12 or £8 with an advantage card. I went next door to Superdrug where I got it for £9 no strings attached.
And don't even get me started on Tesco...!

Talipesmum · 06/06/2023 15:43

I hate carrying rewards cards but I’m more than happy to have them on my phone as it’s always with me. The boots app used to not work when scanning the reward card at the tills but it’s been fine for ages now so I always use it. I don’t use any I have to carry in person cos it’s so annoying.

Skinnermarink · 06/06/2023 15:48

Sadly Boots has slashed the number of points you get for purchases by half- such a shame, it was one of the best if not the best loyalty card out there. So now there are a lot of Advantage card only offers to keep it sweet.

stbrandonsboat · 06/06/2023 15:53

They harvest members' data which they sell on to advertising companies and goodness knows who else. They're nothing but scammy blackmailers.

LizzieSiddal · 06/06/2023 15:53

I agree with you. I used to pop into Tescos occasionally but now feel totally excluded when I went in and saw all the Membership prices. Won’t be going in again.

Mylifeislikeaboatrace · 06/06/2023 15:56

My cynical mind thinks that they can slash the prices because they are over priced to begin with. I'm a Lidl gal everytime, no frills no fuss, I like it that way.

LifeIsPainHighness · 06/06/2023 15:57

I hate it too because my Tesco app ALWAYS logs me out because there’s no signal in the shop O often have to go stand by the front door to get signal to sign on for cheaper goods.

infuriating

Absolutely.

PurpleBananaSmoothie · 06/06/2023 16:04

I didn’t mind the rewards aspect. I used my boots points roughly every other year around Christmas to top up presents and I like the Tesco club card rewards. I really don’t like the member prices. Or that the member price is the big one and the non-member price is very small. It meant that if we popped into sainsburys instead of Tesco we lost a few clubcard points but now it’s a difference of £30.

Can anyone explain what they could do with the data that could be annoying to me? A genuine question. Is it just that they might send me junk mail?

Phos · 06/06/2023 16:13

It doesn’t cost you anything to join and most places you can have a key fob or have a digital card on your phone. Even if not it’s no great hardship to put an extra card in my purse. So no, I don’t dislike it.

LizzieSiddal · 06/06/2023 16:22

To me when you walk in a shop and it’s full of “Member price” stickers, it’s saying fuck off to anyone without the membership card.

JamMakingWannaBe · 06/06/2023 16:30

Especially the "membership" lunchtime meal deals!

Fillyfrog · 06/06/2023 16:33

They do it at Morrisons now I've noticed! I've never wanted to download the Morrisons reward card and now i kind of feel I have to 😡

stargirl1701 · 06/06/2023 16:33

Yup. I don't shop at Tesco anymore.

FuckTheLemonsandBail · 06/06/2023 16:35

It's really manipulative, I never minded the idea that people could accrue points (they're rewarding you for the very valuable data you're providing in using their loyalty card) but this new trend of making things a LOT more expensive if you don't have a card feels really dodgy to me. The price difference can be really significant. I try not to shop at places that do this now.

FloweryName · 06/06/2023 16:42

I like the member prices but apart from Boots I’m useless at using the points for anything so this way I still get to benefit. I don’t believe it saves money overall though, they’re still making enough out of me on all the other overpriced things.

HollyFern1110 · 06/06/2023 16:46

I really don't understand how people have the time to get upset about things like this. I do have a Tesco Clubcard & the Lidl Plus app but not any of the others. If a shop is selling something at a price I don't want to pay I'll just buy it elsewhere. It's never occurred to me to get pissed off that others have downloaded an app I can't be bothered to.

I would hope that there's a way round the application process for those with learning disabilities, dementia, visual impairment, homelessness etc.

So long as everyone is able to get the card & savings then it is fair. You don't need a smartphone for a Tesco Clubcard.

LittleMissViolet · 06/06/2023 16:50

It's an utter pain in the arse. A few times I've popped in Tesco on the way home to pick up something. While I was there I thought I would add a few other things from my list then realise I don't have my card. Only things going in my basket are the ones that don't penalise non-card holders..... More fool you Tesco.

It's Waitrose all the way for me I'm afraid. I feel they are the most of fair of all the supermarkets in terms of their marketing and what they promise/deliver.

Pixiedust1234 · 06/06/2023 16:53

Huh?? I thought the Boots card was just for points and not lower prices?

I only know of Tesco and Sainsburys doing cheaper prices for membership.

Rubbish.

My mum is one of those "don't have a smartphone" people, she could no sooner send an email than fly to the moon.

She has a plastic Tesco clubcard and a plastic Co-Op card.

LauraNicolaides · 06/06/2023 16:54

Totally agree! And I only ever used to shop at Tesco. Ironically it was Tesco's loyalty cards that drove me into the arms of their competitor! (That and the fact that they never have any fucking tills open.)

I don't mind membership cards. I just leave them in my purse it's not like they are heavy to carry around.
