To hate the trend of shops giving lower prices for ‘members’

Just give us lower prices without forcing everyone to carry cards or download apps (that glitch/not scan/no wifi in store).

Just wasted 30min of lunchtime in Boots only to realise my physical card is at home, so I would be charged more. Logged into Boots site and the number isn’t even on there - “we keep the last 3 digits hidden”.

Amazon Prime wins again.

Go on tell me how much you all love carrying cards/downloading apps for £1 off some foot peel socks.

It doesn’t cost you anything to join and most places you can have a key fob or have a digital card on your phone. Even if not it’s no great hardship to put an extra card in my purse
If it only was that simple!
I had the Tesco and Lidl card on my phone.
The number of times I have got to the till and the app needs updating! Beyond ridiculous. Something I don't realise until I got my phone out. Or the times there has been no signal and it just buffers.

I have been trying to update my Tesco card as I was locked out for some reason and ended up in that stupid situation where it doesn't recognize my email when I log in so I try to set up a new account and it says email already taken.
I was in Tesco at Prestwich a few weeks ago and only had a limited amout of money. I wasn't expecting the phone card to crash and had budgeted for the Tesco prices. I had to do the return item shame move when I didn't have enough cash at checkout. I am not talking about a fiver but something like £30 difference between non and Tesco price.

Framboisery · 06/06/2023 16:57

Don't mind the Tesco, nectar and Boots cards as it does gain discounts.
Waitrose card is useless, purely harvesting my data for no real gain. Morrisons seems the same.

One advantage (ha!) Of an Advantage card is that they email and write to you if you've bought something that has been flagged up as having bad batches of been withdrawn for whatever reason. Found this out recently.

Paperlate · 06/06/2023 16:57

If you can afford to shop at Waitrose I don't suppose 50p off a tin of beans in Tesco means that much to you.

TheGrimSqueakersFlea · 06/06/2023 16:58

@BonnieGlasses you would have got points and possibly money off if you used a superdrug card. They have a loyalty card similar to boots

Paperlate · 06/06/2023 16:58

I don't have the apps, just the physical cards.

jellycakeandicecream · 06/06/2023 16:59

The Stocard app works well as you only need one app to store your loyalty cards on, rather than each individual store.

UpTheAnte · 06/06/2023 16:59

The membership thing does annoy me, but paying higher prices annoys me more. For those with a smartphone, download the Stocard app, you can store all the numbers for your loyalty card in one place.

OhmygodDont · 06/06/2023 17:00

You can store most of these cards in the wallet section on your phone. It’s not exactly a huge deal or screenshot the barcode from in the app then delete the app if you really want.

Don’t think there are many place who don’t offer rewards by having their app or card these days.

Maybe aldi and sparks? No wait sparks have a membership thing got some free Percy’s once. Waitrose?

Elphame · 06/06/2023 17:01

With you on this. I hate the two tier pricing.

The apps always need updating when I try and use them which I rarely do which is probably the problem. I like to confuse the algorithm as much as possible!

LauraNicolaides · 06/06/2023 17:01

LizzieSiddal · 06/06/2023 16:22

To me when you walk in a shop and it’s full of “Member price” stickers, it’s saying fuck off to anyone without the membership card.

Them: So why not just get a loyalty card?

Me: So why not just go to Lidl? Grin

Verv · 06/06/2023 17:01

I dont have any membership or store cards. Or apps for points or whatever.
Cant be arsed with it.

TitInATrance · 06/06/2023 17:03

It’s annoying and I avoid Tesco and Sainsbury’s because of it. I do have the Lidl app and co-op card but differential pricing seems less of a thing with them.

This. I remember everyone kicking off online over Xmas because of the massive savings on alcohol if you had a clubcard, they ignored the thousands of other people repeatedly pointing out that literally anyone could get one for free. I keep mine on a fob on my keyring, it doesn’t have to be on a device. If you’re capable of shopping and paying for it all by yourself then you’re capable of scanning a key fob. It’s a clever and effective way of getting people to use their company. I’m a carer and I’ve mostly shopped at Tescos since I got a club card, I’ve got some massive savings for my clients, and I get the benefit of the points. Win-win

The Co op do different pricing for members. Especially on essentials like bread and milk

Fiddlerdragon · 06/06/2023 17:11

For all the people complaining about the app. All you need is a keyring

stbrandonsboat · 06/06/2023 15:53

They harvest members' data which they sell on to advertising companies and goodness knows who else. They're nothing but scammy blackmailers.

Yes, it's annoying and just a huge attempt at getting data.

I practically got a lecture in Superdrug about not having one. I'm hoping a Savers will open nearby!

My normal shopping is at Aldi but mum likes me to take her to
Morrisons. She's given up on loyalty cards there because of the faff and the till lady kept repeating "but you might save money".

Considering mum is now a tiny old lady with a walking stick and very obvious other difficulties, I couldn't believe how much the woman was selling it. I glared at her, she rolled her eyes and gave a big sigh. but she was honestly going on and on and upsetting mum, hence why I glared.

OhBling · 06/06/2023 17:22

Well, I just wish it was more blatantly explained. "We will give you a discount because the data we get from you using your loyalty card has significant value to us. It is a straight financial transaction in which we are, in effect, paying you to provide us with that data."

cocksstrideintheevening · 06/06/2023 17:23

LifeIsPainHighness · 06/06/2023 15:57

I hate it too because my Tesco app ALWAYS logs me out because there’s no signal in the shop O often have to go stand by the front door to get signal to sign on for cheaper goods.

infuriating

Screenshot your qr code from the app, no network needed.

They're not going to discount for no reason so you get a discount in return for your shopping habits / info. Can't get worked up about it. I have all mine in my phone.

TshirtInColour · 06/06/2023 17:25

Mylifeislikeaboatrace · 06/06/2023 15:56

My cynical mind thinks that they can slash the prices because they are over priced to begin with. I'm a Lidl gal everytime, no frills no fuss, I like it that way.

Lidl also do a darn annoying loyalty card

redskylight · 06/06/2023 17:25

You can always buy the item at the non-member price (getting it cheaper is a perk for being a member, so you can opt not to be one). I don't see why a few cards (how many of these shops do most people go to?) in your wallet is a big deal though. You don't need to have the app or a smartphone.

shivawn · 06/06/2023 17:26

Tesco is the worst, their membership offers are such bullshit half the time anyway. Saw cereal bars there yesterday, €2.50 a box for non-members or €1.50 for members. Those same bars are €1 a box in a competitor supermarket with no membership card needed.

SchoolShenanigans · 06/06/2023 17:27

It's not though, is it.

H&M regularly give me £3 vouchers off which add up quickly and often equates to 20% off. Then, I get to buy sale things before they've sold out and often other money off.

So... Personally I do see the benefit, and if someone forgets their card or doesn't want to use the app, then that's on them.

TshirtInColour · 06/06/2023 17:27

Don’t be fooled by this membership lark, you are not members, and you aren’t making savings, they inflate the prices, and use algorithms to keep their profits high
We don’t want to be in the Costco situation, and have to pay to enter a supermarket.
Costcos prices are not cheap in my opinion, but they make millions from their membership fee

DancedByTheLightOfTheMoon · 06/06/2023 17:27

Well soon it will be online only or click and collect so problem solved, supermarkets no longer want customers shopping in stores,.and.to be honest you can see why.

Confusedmumannoyedson · 06/06/2023 17:27

I do agree @SaturdayGiraffe however, I imagine they gather a lot of data about their customers with the loyalty cards and so reward them for using them.
