To hate the trend of shops giving lower prices for ‘members’

Just give us lower prices without forcing everyone to carry cards or download apps (that glitch/not scan/no wifi in store).

Just wasted 30min of lunchtime in Boots only to realise my physical card is at home, so I would be charged more. Logged into Boots site and the number isn’t even on there - “we keep the last 3 digits hidden”.

Amazon Prime wins again.

Go on tell me how much you all love carrying cards/downloading apps for £1 off some foot peel socks.

Well no, they can’t afford to sell you coffee for £4 if you’re not a member, because Margaret the member is in fact giving them more than £4 for her coffee - Margaret is also giving them valuable information about her and her family and their shopping habits.

I like it personally - a reason to stay loyal to the shop I guess!

I have the apps and then add the cards to my apple wallet, very easy.

Absolutely do not care if my data is being harvested/sold 😂

I agree. Hate being manipulated. I can’t bring myself to pay the higher ‘non member price’ so I either go without the item, find a substitute whose price has not been fiddled with, or else go somewhere else. I rarely set foot in a Tesco now thanks to shenanigans like this.

The issue is not carrying a card around. It's the fact that an extremely sophisticated, detailed picture is being built of you and your family, that is then used to target you (and your children) with advertising – especially when they are online.

I'm genuinely curious about this. Could you explain how they could target me? They presumably would only have my postal address and the (fake or "burner") email address I put on the form. They're very welcome to send me junk mail every day, it goes straight in the recycling bin! (And presumably costs them a lot of money.)

I don't really understand why data on my digestive-biscuit consumption is of any value to them at all.

This is the classic example of how they can use the data in quite intrusive ways. For example, targeting you with baby product ads before you’ve told family that you are pregnant.

Every time you click on a link on MN or any use any other website for online shopping you are targeted by advertisers. I don't see why you are all angsty about Tesco using your data.

There’s also some retailers who do make you pay for membership - and then you get much lower prices. Like Beautypie for example.

I guess the theory is that you will choose to buy more stuff, so that the membership discounts on products you buy is more than you’ve spent on the membership. Also because you’ve already shelled out for a year’s membership, so should stock up now before you have to pay for another year.

Beauty Pie and Tesco are hardly comparable! 💁🏻‍♀️🤣🤣🤣

They will identify that people with your digestive biscuit consumption levels typically also buy other specific products - and send you advertising (e.g. coupons) specifically about these items. Thereby tempting you both to buy more items and keeping you loyal (because you identify with the store as they sell items that appeal to you as a digestive biscuit lover).

this. I have an elderly relative with dementia still just about able to go to the local supermarket independently but doesn't have a smartphone and definitely wouldn't be able to use one and has no clue what an email address is. why should they have to pay double the price for items. it's like they're being penalised for having dementia and not being able to manage these things such as apps etc which younger more able people can. It annoys me so much and all needs scrapping.

It’s so blatantly manipulative, I hate it and it’s more likely to drive me elsewhere than make me join their schemes. But it has always been the supermarkets’ weak point- that customers aren’t tied to them in any way- so I suppose it’s not surprising they’re attempting to change that.

I hate it too because my Tesco app ALWAYS logs me out because there’s no signal in the shop O often have to go stand by the front door to get signal to sign on for cheaper goods.

Take a screenshot fo your clubcard bar code, I always have the same problem with it not downloading but now problem solved.

I won't shop in Tesco anymore.
The Co op doesn't do this yet, but I'm rural & they DO charge £££££ in there.
My Dd likes Salad Cream. We are out. I went to the Co op to buy some. Only brand available is Heinz. They wanted £3.99 for a small squeezy bottle. Nope.

The collection of customer data and the building of customer profiles is a step towards personalised pricing. We already see this in some markets online. If retailers can see that you are a loyal customer of an item and do not consider similar items easily acceptable substitutes for that item, they know that they can charge you more for said item than they could a customer who would easily make the switch to another product. You are deemed to be willing to pay a higher price because you place a higher value on the item. In personalised pricing, most customers will lose out. Is this a pricing set-up that you want to support and encourage?

It’s the ‘one price for members and one for non-members’ thing that I hate - that and the stupid ‘zapping’ advert, which is so irritating. I’m not particularly rational about data - I like my My Waitrose Loyalty wallet and I always have a look at the end of my shop to see if there’s anything I fancy buying in there. I don’t feel ‘targeted’ because it feels as if they are doing me a favour offering me some deals that are ‘specially tailored to me’. It does show you how it’s really in the psychology of it, and ‘knowing your customer’.

Im fine with it. It means my son can go to the corner Tesco and not have to take a bus to a Lidl on occasion. He keeps an eye what's available.
For me it's a bonus - and if Lurpak is 50p cheaper that week then I'll buy that.
It's just a card. Not sure why it's so much hassle. Plus Tesco vouchers have terrific deals!

Our Co-Op Sainsburys and Tesco all do the whole "you have saved 8.68 today on member discounts"
Superdrug had membership prices on some of the items.
It's just another move to coerce the already cash strapped public to join up and be "loyal"
Yes I like saving a few points to use at Christmas but if they can offer the coffee £1 cheaper to a nectar holder they should just reduce the price for all shoppers they are still choosing Sainsburys wether they have a card or not.

I wonder if they lose out on people who can’t bring themselves to pay the non-member price because they don’t have a card with them for whatever reason, as it feels so painful and so walk away from the purchase altogether. They must measure these things and decide they can afford to write off these customers.

Obviously I wouldn’t hold it over anyone for not thinking that deeply into it (it’s loyalty cards after all!) but I doubt anyone would be shocked by the connection once it was made .
