Is my baby still alive mistaken miscarriage? Why is my belly so big?

Has anyone ever had their belly get way bigger directly AFTER miscarriage?

I had a scan and was told likely miscarriage especially if bleeding starts which it did.

Since then my belly is HUGE and no it's not weight gain I'm naturally always size 8 and it's literally only my belly that's gone big not the rest of me.

Has this happened to anyone? I'm going to take a pregnancy test but should I be worried?

How long ago was the miscarriage? How far along were you?

PumpkinPie2016 · 02/06/2023 19:10

Sorry to hear about your suspected miscarriage 😔

How long ago was your scan and how many weeks would you be now, assuming the pregnancy hadn't miscarried? If it was fairly recent, could it be hormones still settling?

I would try to get another scan - can you afford a private one? If not, can you contact the hospital and explain your concerns ?

ivfregret · 02/06/2023 19:12

The miscarriage was 13th May where I would have been six or seven weeks.

My belly has never ever looked like this but it wasn't spotting it was bleeding so I assumed it's definitely gone but even DH looked at it and thought it is bigger than he has ever seen.

It's also pouch like like a pregnancy but I don't want to waste time clinging to something so wandering if this is possible or I'm being stupid

Well it’s not a baby bump even if you didn’t have a miscarriage OP. A pregnancy test won’t tell you much either as hormones could still be settling. Can you book in for another scan somewere? The belly could just be bloating. Sorry about your loss

ADHDDDDDDDBOOM · 02/06/2023 19:19

Forget about the stomach and rely on a pregnancy test. I'm surprised the hospital didn't give you that very basic advice.

Heartsnrainbows · 02/06/2023 19:19

I've known people to have episodes of heavy bleeding during pregnancy and not lose the baby. I'd book another scan tbh as a hormonal test won't tell you much this soon after miscarrying.

Not true.
unless there's retain product, the test should be negative by week 2.

It's been 3 weeks.

My pregnancy tests were still positive 5 weeks after my miscarriage, so that ‘very basic advice’ is actually pretty useless.

Not always the case, hormones can take longer to settle, and even if she has retained products causing a positive test, she wouldn’t still be pregnant would she? Scan would be more useful.

Rightnowstraightaway · 02/06/2023 19:23

When I miscarried I had to have another scan to check everything had gone. Did you not have this offered?

I'd seek another scan. Pregnancy tests can still be positive after a miscarriage for a while.

Favouritefruits · 02/06/2023 19:23

I bled through my pregnancy it’s so much more common that we are lead to believe, you wouldn’t be showing at 7 weeks though. You need to do a proper pregnancy test, one that says words rather than lines as you will keep seeing thing that may not be there.

TheSnowyOwl · 02/06/2023 19:24

My pregnancy tests were positive for a long time after my first miscarriage. I also don’t think many women, especially when it’s their first pregnancy, have a bump that early on. Lots of bloating is much more likely.

EsmeSusanOgg · 02/06/2023 19:26

The actual miscarriage for me happened at 12 weeks (just before scan) but the evidence of my uterus option etc. showed it had happened at 8-9 weeks and it just took my body a few weeks to catch up hormonly. During which time I had a lot of bloating, as you'd expect if you were still pregnant around then. That did not go down properly for another couple of weeks after the event. I also tested positive for a week post-miscarriage too.

It took me by surprise, and wasn't very pleasant. I wish it had been explained to me before hand.

Sending internet-hugs OP. If you're not sure, ask for another check. A scan is going to be the only really relaible thing right now.

Cantbebotheredwithausername · 02/06/2023 19:31

How many weeks are you along?

You can only know for sure you had a miscarriage if it's confirmed on a scan. If it's too early to reliably detect a heartbeat, it'll only be possible to know for sure by performing two scans 1-2 weeks apart to look for growth/heart beat.

I'd ask for a scan in your position. Yes, it's actually possible that you're still pregnant. Bleeding when pregnant doesn't always mean miscarriage.

Ihatethenewlook · 02/06/2023 19:32

I’ve known two people to not know they were carrying twins, miscarry one, and then find out months later they still had one of the twins.

EricNorthman · 02/06/2023 19:32

I did a pregnancy test as my stomach started being a hard bloat. 2 hours after a positive test, I had a miscarraige. Unmistakably so.....
Had to go to the EPU to get checked out, and there was still a viable pregnancy sac. She is now sat beside me and almost 3!
I had miscarried a twin.
So yes it does happen, and I pray this is the case for you x

EricNorthman · 02/06/2023 19:36

My bloating from was week 7 onwards. To the point my closest friends new if i wore a fitted dress

TeenLifeMum · 02/06/2023 19:44

I bled and was told pregnancy wasn’t viable but it turned out it was and I had twins. Get checked xx

Kiwano · 02/06/2023 19:46

Did you have a D&C?

Bewilderedbotheredbemused · 02/06/2023 19:46

Did you just have some bleeding OP and assume it was a miscarriage or did you go to the epau and they confirmed it.

i always thought bleeding was a sign of miscarriage but I had 2 episodes of bleeding with my eldest and they told me that 70% of women have some sort of bleeding. So you could still be pregnant. I’d take a test and then maybe try and book it at a private place if positive.

ill keep everything crossed for you :)

Rocket1982 · 02/06/2023 19:50

Get checked medically. Yes it could be twins but there are other rare complications like partial molar pregnancy which would need to be treated.

catforbashes · 02/06/2023 19:56

Why were you told it was a likely miscarriage? Was that before the bleeding started?

FWIW I bled heavily at 8 weeks, a huge gush that ran down my legs (sorry). The pregnancy continued and I had a healthy baby.

I really hope you can get an answer soon

WoolerOwl · 02/06/2023 19:57

As Rocket1982 said, really important to get checked hcg test and perhaps scan because of the small but serious possibility of molar pregnancy. If your hcg levels are fluctuating or still rising, and there isn't still a viable pregnancy, you should ask the medics to consider this as a possibility. xx

WoolerOwl · 02/06/2023 19:58

Sorry about the crossing out, not intended.
