Is my baby still alive mistaken miscarriage? Why is my belly so big?

Has anyone ever had their belly get way bigger directly AFTER miscarriage?

I had a scan and was told likely miscarriage especially if bleeding starts which it did.

Since then my belly is HUGE and no it's not weight gain I'm naturally always size 8 and it's literally only my belly that's gone big not the rest of me.

Has this happened to anyone? I'm going to take a pregnancy test but should I be worried?

I've just recently been in this situation where extreme bloating continued and worsened due to retained pregnancy product. The first thing to do is take a pregnancy test. If negative (unlikely), accept that it's still pregnancy hormones causing bloating and that it will rectify itself soon. If positive, then it is likely the miscarriage did not complete itself. You will then need an ultrasound and may need medical management. As people have said, even in the unlikely scenario that the baby actually is okay (which sounds unlikely though you haven't told us exactly what the scan indicated), the stomach size increase will still be from bloating so I wouldn't read into it. It simply means your pregnancy hormones are still active and it sounds like retained pregnancy product (which is actually very common) is the culprit. Did you have many large clots when you bled?

So realistically if it wasn’t a miscarriage you’re 9 weeks. You wouldn’t have a noticeable bump like you’re describing.

there could be other causes, get checked out if you’re concerned.

BeeHappy12 · 02/06/2023 20:17

I've had 3 miscarriages and pregnancy tests have been positive for up to 5 weeks later. The nhs epu told me not to test until at least 3 weeks after the miscarriage

pilates · 02/06/2023 20:23

I would ask for another scan

TookTheBook · 02/06/2023 20:27

I'd be worried it was an infection - retained remaining pregnancy tissue. Could be very serious.
Get seen as soon as possible. Go to the EPU.

ivfregret · 02/06/2023 20:27

It's bloating. I just took a test it's negative.

Thank you all though I guess I was clinging to a tiny bit of stupid hope!!

My belly really is massive though it looks like I need to hit the gym a bit more 😂

This is what I'm worried about because the clots that came out were not that much to be honest I was surprised. I'm going to epu

How do you feel in yourself OP, do you have any bleeding, pelvic pain, fever?

I agree my concern would be infection, Id want that ruled out asap.

Soontobe60 · 02/06/2023 20:33

I don’t understand why people would continue to take pregnancy tests after a miscarriage.

Have you ever had a miscarriage?

KisstheTeapot14 · 02/06/2023 20:36

Agree with TooktheBook, that was exactly what I was thinking too as I was reading.

Any signs of temperature?

Get seen for a scan to check. 111 or Midwife or EPU, whatever is the quickest route. Explain you are concerned about retained products (hate that phrase but its what they understand). Infection and septicaemia could be a real risk.

And if there is still a pregnancy, like a secret twin then you also need to know that too.

I really don't want to alarm you but if it is this you need to be seen asap.

🌸 Sorry for your loss, look after yourself.

Come back and let us know how you've got on.

ivfregret · 02/06/2023 20:38

Thank you all, I hate TTC it causes so much bullshit I cannot believe all the bullshit and there isn't even a pregnancy yet.

Complete shit.

But thank you all.

Another waste of a Saturday going for a stupid scan all this has wasted enough of my life already.

Maybe it's time to move on

I don’t understand why people would continue to take pregnancy tests after a miscarriage.

  1. That's literally what my EPAU told me to do to confirm it.

  2. Grief makes you do weird shit and cling on to any bit of hope

Have you ever had a miscarriage?

ivfregret · 02/06/2023 20:41

Yes I've had 5 @namechange55465

Yes I've had 5 @namechange55465

She was asking the poster she quoted, not you OP

KisstheTeapot14 · 02/06/2023 20:43

Don't lose hope @ivfregret . Get checked out so you're safe.
Tomorrow is another day. Gentle virtual hugs.

ivfregret · 02/06/2023 20:46

Thank you I didn't realise @TeaKitten I wasn't angry at the poster anyhow just at my situation.

It makes me sad sometimes because it's lingering over my life.

If I can't have children I just want to move on.

If I can I just want it to happen.

The uncertainty is really unpleasant.

I think about it all. The. Time.

Not even because I'm massively into children if I'm honest but it's just holding my life and emotions io so much.

You need to get checked with another scan. Hoping for the best for you x

ivfregret · 02/06/2023 20:50

I've just checked and EPU is closed until Monday and my local scan clinic Jo availability until 10th is there anywhere else I can go?

OP posts:
NadjaCravensworth1 · 02/06/2023 20:54

Any other private scans you could try? I've found they are so nice and may be able to squeeze you in, might be worth ringing around in the morning? I would say try a&e but I've been there with miscarriages before and they've never had anyone who could actually scan me, every time I've had to wait days for an appt. I'm so sorry OP, it's a brutal journey x

KisstheTeapot14 · 02/06/2023 20:55

111 and ask to be seen or A and E x

Dillydollydingdong · 02/06/2023 20:56

Maybe there were two babies in there and you only lost one?
