£162 Million to bury the Queen! AIBU to think this could have been better spent improving Public Services like the NHS, Education, Housing etc

Stable door

spilt milk

the moment has passed

Wait for the “tourism” argument though 😂

Fruitful82 · 18/05/2023 15:21

I think the queen would have been appalled by the money spent.

a frugal understated woman, but they disrespected her by doing what they would have known she would have felt very uncomfortable about

WhenTheBeeStings · 18/05/2023 15:22

Fruitful her funeral had been planned for years. She knew all the arrangements.

She signed off on it when alive.

FeltCarrot · 18/05/2023 15:23

But she knew what kind of funeral she would get. Even Phillips funeral would have cost a fair amount. The RF are so out of touch it’s unbelievable.

StoneofDestiny · 18/05/2023 15:24

Yes - the Queen planned and agreed it all herself. She wasn’t paying!

Question. For how long would the money spent on the Coronation fund the NHS? Guesses to the nearest day.

Fruitful82 · 18/05/2023 15:25

No way. I imagine to signed off something

but it wasnt this

unless she underwent a seismic personality shift over the last year of her life

PuttingDownRoots · 18/05/2023 15:25

A massive part of that will have been security. All those World leaders and foreign monarchy flying in for example.

StoneofDestiny · 18/05/2023 15:26

They are the only ones whose Wills are allowed to be a secret / to hide the enormous personal wealth.

SoupedUpSue · 18/05/2023 15:31

I gently think you’re being unreasonable. I think the monarchy serve a purpose - it is useful to have an apolitical figurehead and the pomp is part of the theatre that keeps them relevant. As for the NHS etc, I am extremely grateful for it but think there is a huge amount of wastage that this money wouldn’t fix.

StoneofDestiny · 18/05/2023 15:31

TheInterceptor - it would contribute - and there would be something to show for it. There is nothing to show for it going on a funeral except another royal pantomime.

Why could they not have a small private funeral and ask these wealthy attendees to plant trees in her honour. That would have stopped the unnecessary flying around the word, security costs and all the other pallaver that went with it.

The queen of england being frugal 😂

VariationsonaTheme · 18/05/2023 15:36

Lots of the costs of these things is to do with the amount of personnel needed. Those people are being paid whether they’re performing a ceremonial role like the funeral or coronation, or doing their every day job in the armed forces/police force/ ambulance crew. So it’s not all ‘extra’ expense.

StoneofDestiny · 18/05/2023 15:36

soupedupsue there is vast wastage in the Royal Family. Cringeworthy fighting to evict a single man (Andrew) from a 70 bed mansion that he is determined to stay in. Huge mansions fully staffed by empty most of the year and unnecessary flights, visits and ‘outings’ for countless royals and their entourages!
One Head of State (not their extended family, cousins, brothers, sisters, children ancient aunts and uncles, ex nannies, ex servants etc all housed at taxpayers expense.

I think you're talking nearest hour, actually. Just based on England's budget, not taking into consideration the other 3 countries, £165m would pay for 8hrs.

80skid · 18/05/2023 15:42

Every card and tribute to her has been kept and stored in archives too. Millions and millions of them stored forever.

StoneofDestiny · 18/05/2023 15:43

variation Nope - MOD coats 2.8 million of that

OP posts:
tigger2022 · 18/05/2023 15:47

Yes YABU she was head of state for 70 years, it was a state funeral (look at republics like US and France - they aren’t cheapskates when it comes to state occasions), 30m people just in this country (nearly half the population) watched it, it wasn’t just about her it was about a transition period, and most of it was security (so blame the naughty people for that)… also the money is not being spent INSTEAD OF the NHS and it would run the NHS for about 20 seconds anyway lol

knottsberryfarm · 18/05/2023 15:50

a frugal understated woman who’s happy was owning racehorses.

I mean the idea the queen was frugal is surely just a myth?

knottsberryfarm · 18/05/2023 15:50

**hobby

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 18/05/2023 15:54

I'm no monarchist but for crying out loud what was anyone expecting?

She was the Queen of England for decades, was there ever even a slim possibility that her funeral would be a frugal affair? Why would it be expected that it would be anything other than a massive affair with a global presence?

Compared to the absolute fuck-tonne of money the Tories have pissed up the wall over the last dozen years endorsing each other and lining their own pockets, it's a negligible cost.

Theunamedcat · 18/05/2023 15:58

The government WOULD NOT have spent it on the NHS its obvious they have money because how else would they find it when they want to they just won't spend it on the NHS

Your foolish if you think otherwise

The queen of england being frugal 😂

She was apparently. Always switched off lights, didn't waste things. She was a product of her war generation.
