£162 Million to bury the Queen! AIBU to think this could have been better spent improving Public Services like the NHS, Education, Housing etc

Exactly… really annoys me how stingy some British people are sometimes 😂 if it was up to them we’d have no state occasions, nobody managing or facilitating or governing anything, no art, no culture, nothing beautiful, just 68 million nurses 😂

Haha yes a creaking NHS monolith and that’s it 👌

Mayorquimby2 · 18/05/2023 16:46

It meant one of the royal family was gone rather than adding another person to it.

That's a net positive

I think that's a needlessly horrible thing to say. Imagine if someone spoke in terms like that about your parents or even child. It's a net positive to the world that they've gone.

Famzonhol · 18/05/2023 17:38

Oh for goodness sake.

Most of that money went on payments to the many people who worked on or at the funeral. And what do you think they’re all going to do with that money? Why, spend it and put it back into circulation of course.

Fruitful82 · 18/05/2023 15:25

No way. I imagine to signed off something

but it wasnt this

unless she underwent a seismic personality shift over the last year of her life

It had been planned for over 30 years.

The Bank Holiday will also account for a substantial part of the costs too.

It is hilarious to think people believe the queen was frugal!

I've often thought this. Some people would just like the whole country to be a hospital. No money spent on parks or beaches or mountains. No entertainment. Just one big hospital.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 18/05/2023 15:54

I'm no monarchist but for crying out loud what was anyone expecting?

She was the Queen of England for decades, was there ever even a slim possibility that her funeral would be a frugal affair? Why would it be expected that it would be anything other than a massive affair with a global presence?

Compared to the absolute fuck-tonne of money the Tories have pissed up the wall over the last dozen years endorsing each other and lining their own pockets, it's a negligible cost.

Agree wholeheartedly!

luckylavender · 18/05/2023 17:45

Fruitful82 · 18/05/2023 15:21

I think the queen would have been appalled by the money spent.

a frugal understated woman, but they disrespected her by doing what they would have known she would have felt very uncomfortable about

Hardly. She did the planning. It was exactly what she would have expected.

A few years ago they put up a statue opposite Pizza Express by a local artist and people complained that it cost 3 whole hospital beds. It’s like yeah well 3 hospital beds would look rubbish outside pizza express.

CareerQuestioner · 18/05/2023 17:45

Sounds pretty reasonable for a state funeral- about £2 a head for the country. I’m sure the family would have rather done it privately but there would have been an outcry if they had attempted that. Can’t win, really.

Otoh you really can’t call someone whose favourite hobby was racing frugal. Frugal on the small things, maybe.

Hahaha. I know. Our local council put up some bunting or something and people were complaining the money could have gone to the nhs that's on its knees. Yeah, that years old bunting could have been traded in for a box of plasters. 🙄

I am not quite that callous lol
I was really talking about the beauty of the spectacle, it was quite moving and cathartic in a way. Like a visual show of what grief is about, I do believe that many people attended not in memory of the Queen but in memory of their own relatives who had lived during her reign.

Fair point.

You’d get a few takers on here I’m sure 😬

Unhealthier, but it’s ok we live in a hospital

Yes I don't think people get how the budgets work. The council can't just say right no flags for us let's buy plasters from boots for the NHS instead.

Lapland123 · 18/05/2023 17:59

What an enormous waste of our taxes

KnickerlessParsons · 18/05/2023 17:59

TheInterceptor · 18/05/2023 15:25

Question. For how long would the money spent on the Coronation fund the NHS? Guesses to the nearest day.

About 24 hours or so.

ichundich · 18/05/2023 18:00

YANBU. Also what about the cost of these royal mega shows to businesses that are forced to close on the extra bank holidays and zero hour or temp workers who won't get paid when they don't work? Britain is so stuck in the past; it's depressing.

Dinoflaw · 18/05/2023 18:02

The NHS costs more than this in a single day, can't say I can get too worked up about this.

StoneofDestiny · 18/05/2023 18:03

No money spent on parks or beaches or mountains

..........would have been a fantastic investment to build a few more parks across the country that everybody could enjoy and watch develop for future generations. Much better way to remember the passing of a significant person than an ostentatious funeral.

Just one house? So wasteful. You could have built a hospital and cured the world on all that land.
Pfft. 😏

Sorry.... Shameful

Oh, so it's fine to spend £150m to knock buildings down and turn the land into a park so people can waltz about.

But it's not ok to spend £150m to boost the economy by 5x that?😐

Same is for illegal asylum seekers in hotels. £5m a day.
