£162 Million to bury the Queen! AIBU to think this could have been better spent improving Public Services like the NHS, Education, Housing etc

A few years ago they put up a statue opposite Pizza Express by a local artist and people complained that it cost 3 whole hospital beds. It’s like yeah well 3 hospital beds would look rubbish outside pizza express.

I don't know - 'Three hospital beds outside Pizza Express' sounds like a good contender for the Turner Prize.

Queen was head of state. If uk / gb / whatever was a republic and a president died in post, the govt would have picked up the funeral tab.

HerMammy · 19/05/2023 08:30

Let's not forget Charles' tax free £350m inheritance, god forbid they stand on their own two feet.

greennotepad · 18/05/2023 15:32

The queen of england being frugal 😂

There have been a ‘Queen of England’ since the 1700’s. The title changed as there was a wee bit of a union.

BashfulClam · 19/05/2023 08:35

*hasn’t been

Amboseli · 19/05/2023 08:50

Don't forget the royal family don't pay inheritance tax unlike us peasants and serfs.

WandaWonder · 19/05/2023 08:52

How much did it generate in tourism etc.?

GCWorkNightmare · 19/05/2023 08:54

Famzonhol · 19/05/2023 08:02

Which was good for the hotels and kept money circulating in the economy.

The taxpayer paid for it.

Sorryyoufeelthatwayy · 19/05/2023 09:05

“I’m no monarchist or royalist (yes you are) but tourism, hard work, dedication, duty, world stage, frugal blah blah P.S. we hate Meghan”.

Yawn

Famzonhol · 19/05/2023 11:54

GCWorkNightmare · 19/05/2023 08:54

The taxpayer paid for it.

Nonsense. The money didn’t just disappear. It was paid to workers who went on to circulate it in the economy as normal.

Famzonhol · 19/05/2023 11:54

And themselves paid tax on what they earned.

GCWorkNightmare · 19/05/2023 12:49

I wonder what proportion of the £4-500 per room
per night we paid at premier ins went to the workers. 🤔

Castlerock44 · 19/05/2023 13:00

I don't think she'd have been appalled at all. In fact that's probably what she'd have expected. All that "frugal" talk was nonsense....(who the heck was she saving money for) Probably when it came to paying staff, but certainly not when it came to taking from the public purse.

Castlerock44 · 19/05/2023 13:01

Toddlerteaplease · 18/05/2023 16:02

She was apparently. Always switched off lights, didn't waste things. She was a product of her war generation.

Certainly wasn't frugal with her many palaces/homes. Usually all fully staffed and maintained. Frugal with staff wages though. Hmm

Castlerock44 · 19/05/2023 13:03

00100001 · 18/05/2023 16:34

Which is fine. Your opinion.

However, you can't deny that these major events actually boost our economy. If they "spend" £150m on a state funeral, then there's probably a boost of £500m to economy

Those extra bank holidays cost the country billions in lost revenue.

I don’t think £3 per person would make much difference to education, nhs, housing etc.

Did they?

I gently think you’re being unreasonable. I think the monarchy serve a purpose - it is useful to have an apolitical figurehead and the pomp is part of the theatre that keeps them relevant. As for the NHS etc, I am extremely grateful for it but think there is a huge amount of wastage that this money wouldn’t fix.

Exactly. Just throwing money at the NHS would t fix anything long term. They should move to a model like we have in Australia. It’s still free for those who need it and I never have to wait for a doctors appointment etc.

Castlerock44 · 19/05/2023 14:22

If they paid inheritance tax like the rest of us, they could have funded it themselves. Imagine that Shock If there wasn't enough I'm sure they could have afforded to pay the balance.

Castlerock44 · 19/05/2023 14:34

suminagashi · 18/05/2023 16:14

I'm sick of moaning whingers who do nothing but complain about other people. So what if it cost that for the Queen's funeral? I couldn't care less. She gave a lifetime of service, and she deserved it. As did Prince Philip. So there.

I'm sure most of us would be happy to give a lifetimes "service" to acquire umpteen palaces and millions of taxpayers cash. That "service" included sailing round the world on the royal yacht Brittania and visiting countries we could only dream about, (but they called it yours of duty) with an army of servants thrown in to attend every conceivable need.

Plus all their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren financially secure for life.

But they love to say "lifetime of service" like its real hardship and we the surfs fall for it.

How dare these "moaning whingers" not be happy for them.

Castlerock44 · 19/05/2023 14:35

Yes every time they have one.

The monarchy received a sovereign grant of £86m in 2020/21, making it the largest declared source of royal income. While the figure is reviewed every five years, the Sovereign Grant is normally calculated at 15% of the crown estate profits.
I’d love to know from republicans how we’d pay for a president. Where would the government get the funds from? It wouldn’t be from the Crown Estate.

If we didn't have a monarchy the profits from the crown estates would revert back to us. They aren't theirs to keep.

With their huge security bill the royals cost close on £365 million. A presidency would be a hell of a lot cheaper if modelled on Irelands.

GCWorkNightmare · 19/05/2023 12:49

Well next time you stay in a hotel yourself you can ask the hotel owner how much of the money goes to the hotel workers, how much to electricity, water, buildings maintenance, insurance, food, lease etc etc. and get a breakdown.

Then you’ll know.

MummyJ12 · 19/05/2023 14:59

@Castlerock44 It’s disputed as to what would happen to the crown estate, it would probably be split but we don’t know for sure as to what the Royal Family would be able to retain. So it’s impossible to say that all of it would revert. You’re right in that the Royal Family don’t own it though.
