£162 Million to bury the Queen! AIBU to think this could have been better spent improving Public Services like the NHS, Education, Housing etc

It was an absolutely magnificent spectacle and worth every penny in my opinion.

I agree with this and I’m not a monarchist!
It topped all the royal weddings I’ve seen and the recent coronation. 10/10

YOU think the RF serves a purpose. To me, they are a waste of space. So I think you are extremely unreasonable.

Which is fine. Your opinion.

However, you can't deny that these major events actually boost our economy. If they "spend" £150m on a state funeral, then there's probably a boost of £500m to economy

fajitaaa · 18/05/2023 16:35

Of course it could but it wasn't ever going to be was it. It was some sort of queen funeral budget. RIP

It was a funeral how can it "top" a wedding.

They are the only ones whose Wills are allowed to be a secret / to hide the enormous personal wealth.

I don't know how British people have allowed this to continue.

Atishoos · 18/05/2023 16:37

The RF is the biggest con job ever. I hope they are sweating wondering how long it will last.

I mean, come on.... all that (much undisclosed) wealth came from somewhere, all that privilege came from somewhere, all those tax exemptions and hiding of will contents came from somewhere, and the inability to charge the King with any offence because he is above the law came from somewhere. Oh yes a vagina that just happened not to be Sadie's down the pub.

As for the Queen's funeral, well the con job must continue, so a massively expensive send off was necessary. I don't hold the view that she did her duty either. She and her family conned us into thinking they were/are useful, they are not, even taking into account the "soft" diplomacy often spoken about and the "tourism" angle. Even charities do not benefit to any great degree from Royal patronage.

The RF stand for nothing now apart from wealth conned from the people, and gossip about frocks, rocks, strops, feuds and behaviour. That's it really now isn't it?

Toddlerteaplease · 18/05/2023 16:37

I don't begrudge her anything she got. She had no life if her own. But £162 million is a bit steep!

MintJulia · 18/05/2023 16:39

So it cost me less than a coffee. She gave a lifetime of service - literally. Provided a focal point during some pretty terrible governments. Contributed her extraordinary diplomatic skills to some very inexperienced PMs.

IMO she was good value.

You could have built a house for the homeless in that ground that you're just throwing wheat at

Just one house? So wasteful. You could have built a hospital and cured the world on all that land.
Pfft. 😏

Myfuckingredtrousers · 18/05/2023 16:39

Yanbu, it’s a disgrace!

PiriPiriChicken · 18/05/2023 16:43

Thinking regarding RF is too black and white.

  1. The royal family are good for tourism and this money isn’t spent on nothing. It’s been spent with businesses that desperately need the trade.
  2. The RF are (sadly) out of touch
  3. They can still be relevant to people today
  4. It’s too much bloody money to spend on one funeral. Obviously. 😂

All of these things can be true at once!

It was fantastic and so moving. The precision of everything. I don't think I'll ever see the like again in my lifetime. I doubt we'll ever see the gathering of dignitaries like that from all over the world gathering under one roof either.

Mayorquimby2 · 18/05/2023 16:46

fajitaaa · 18/05/2023 16:36

It was a funeral how can it "top" a wedding.

It meant one of the royal family was gone rather than adding another person to it.

That's a net positive

rwalker · 18/05/2023 16:48

Ours friends have four kids both purposely reduced hours so they could get tax credit one uc
colleagues wife openly admits about lying and gets max rate dla and mobility
cousins daughter had first kid at 16 2nd at 19 “she likes babies “ now works the magical 16 hours and lives in a brand new HA house
all of the above are choices

I’d sooner pay for funeral and coronation
than the above

it’s not just the rich and royal family that are causing the problems we have today

lets not kid ourselves if the NHS was better managed and didn’t waste as much public money they’d still need more funding but nowhere near as much as they do now

AFishCalledKeith · 18/05/2023 16:50

This is starting to remind me of that scene in Carry On Screaming...

  • Emily Bung : You haven't taken me out for ages
  • Det Sgt. Bung : Don't exaggerate, we went out a couple of months ago, had a lovely time.
  • Emily Bung : You call that lovely, my poor mother's funeral.
  • Det Sgt. Bung : Well I enjoyed it!

Well I enjoyed the funeral Grin

Nearest hour more likely

Yep - five hours exactly.

gogohmm · 18/05/2023 17:02

That is full costs, some of that would have been spent anyway, some is additional eg the policing costs were high but not of it additional. The mod seems low, guessing the transport was train's transporting service personnel? Chartered buses etc

Parky04 · 18/05/2023 17:05

She should of had a Direct Cremation - only £995!

Exactly… really annoys me how stingy some British people are sometimes 😂 if it was up to them we’d have no state occasions, nobody managing or facilitating or governing anything, no art, no culture, nothing beautiful, just 68 million nurses 😂

Agree, but we are meant to be happy there was enough millions in royal pockets to keep Andrew from having to appear in court on child trafficking charges. Happy he is in a 70 bedroom house as a single unemployed man. Happy this family of billionaires can keep their money hidden from the taxpayers who fund their excesses.
Hope those who think £162 million is 'worth it' and will think the coronation cost will prove worth it, never moan they cannot get hospital treatment, an NHS dentist, a decent neighbourhood school or an affordable home for their children as we used our tax money donated to billionaires who wouldn't do what they do if they were not kept in unimaginable splendour by us!

I've far more respect for real volunteers who get nothing in return for their work except a feel good feeling.

I see

I am not quite that callous lol
I was really talking about the beauty of the spectacle, it was quite moving and cathartic in a way. Like a visual show of what grief is about, I do believe that many people attended not in memory of the Queen but in memory of their own relatives who had lived during her reign.

Deadringer · 18/05/2023 17:20

Yes they should have shoved her in a black bag and left her out for the binmen. 🙄

mumda · 18/05/2023 17:29

For context. This is the amount of money that can be won on the lottery, not every week, but it is and has been won at that level or above a few times.
