Tories lose over 1000 seats in local elections

Which was their damage limitation number so when they lost 800 they could say 'we've not done as badly as we feared'.

AIBU to be cracking open the champagne while they try to figure out how the hell they can put a positive spin on this?

YANBU

I’m enjoying it ! I think they will say it is less than it would have been with Truss.

Havanawinter · 05/05/2023 19:27

Absolutely loving every second of this! I’m 32 and have never been on the “winning” side of a vote. I voted remain, always vote Labour, etc. so this feels nice.

What I think..

I am following with pleasure.

TooBigForMyBoots · 05/05/2023 19:29

Finally people are seeing sense.

Pheasantplucker2 · 05/05/2023 19:29

Loving it! Our previously Tory stranglehold went to Green, both seats. And one by only one vote! I used the tactical vote thing to choose how best to get the Tories about, and spread the word. I like to think I played a little part in their victory!!!

I have been obsessively following the numbers.

Now the question is how to translate what is really clearly a desire to change into change at the GE given our first past the post system. I can't see any exact stats but I think left-leaning parties must have taken nearly 2/3 of the vote.

Fallulah · 05/05/2023 19:33

They got back in where we are, despite a really good independent almost catching them. I don’t know who is still voting for them. Only a 30% turn out locally :(

RampantIvy · 05/05/2023 19:33

Our ward has been Conservative for 25 years, but was won by Labour this year. Great news.

cheesywotsit62 · 05/05/2023 19:34

Fab!!!

Nightlystroll · 05/05/2023 19:35

Was this not expected, though? I mean, if Labour couldn't crush it at these elections after everything that has happened with Johnson and Truss, and with strikes and a cost of living crisis to boot, then they might as well have dissolved the party. Glad to see the Tories with a bloody nose but there's a long way to go yet.

noblegiraffe · 05/05/2023 19:36

Was this not expected, though?

No, they've done even worse than expected, which makes it even more pleasing.

Ours also lost and I'm very pleased. They had become increasingly arrogant and distant.

They need a good wake up call and they certainly got it where I am which has been a traditional conservative strong hold.

BlanketPile · 05/05/2023 19:37

I heard Riagi is still saying they are delivering what the people want..umm...

BlanketPile · 05/05/2023 19:37

Rishi!

Sirzy · 05/05/2023 19:39

My 13 year old is obsessed with politics and has just come running down the stairs celebrating hitting the 1000!

HaroldeVwilliam · 05/05/2023 19:41

Local elections are no bearing on general at all.

No, they gave it as the expected figure so when they lost fewer seats they could say they’d done better than expected. 1000 was actually the top of their worst case scenario and they’ve exceeded that with quite a few councils still to declare.

I’m looking forward to the explanations for this.

But didn't you expect them to lose in these huge numbers? I can't believe people thought they wouldn't.

Sloth66 · 05/05/2023 19:45

Local elections are no bearing on general at all.

It’s reflective of how people are feeling though and the fact that the conservatives have lost in such a scale shows the feelings of the nation

wiffin · 05/05/2023 19:46

Ah. What a shame. Poor Tories.

Fuckers. The icing in the cake for me was voting for my friend and seeing her win. In a previously true blue area. I look forward to the general election next year.

Appuskidu · 05/05/2023 19:48

Excellent-am pleased to hear it!
