What foods are always in your freezer?

Trying to get more organised so thought it might be useful to share ideas.

We always have veggie burgers and a sliced loaf of our favourite bread, several flavours of ice cream, and some frozen fruit for chucking on breakfast or for smoothies. There's usually a portion or two of something like a lasagne for lunch, that was leftover from a dinner. When we go away I try to always freeze milk so we can always have a cup of tea no matter how late it is when we get home.

What handy items do you always have in that help you throw a meal together? I tried frozen chopped onions which seemed like a really useful timesaver, but they tasted kind of weird to me - maybe I should try them again?

Chopped onions and peppers. Some kind of frozen green veg - peas or beans are the most versatile. I make batches of tomato sauce and freeze them individually. Quite often have frozen wine ice cubes in there too for adding to sauces. I also to have some cake or brownies in there too just in case of emergencies.

Donotgogentle · 06/04/2023 20:58

Soffrito - use it for so much cooking - bolognaise, soups, curry.

It makes for much less food waste as I don’t need to have onions, carrots & celery in stock. And it’s easy.

Donotgogentle · 06/04/2023 20:59

Also chopped frozen garlic.

NormalForNuneaton · 06/04/2023 21:00

Peas and sweetcorn - good to add to dishes as well as a side portion of veg.
Spinach - chuck a couple of bales into curry etc
Leftover/batch-cooked cheese sauce and tomato pasta sauce - great timesaver when you're making lasagne etc
Reduced price/yellow-stickered fish, meat, sausages
Fresh chillies - grate to add to dishes
Oven chips, fish fingers, fish cakes etc for the ultimate "bung in the oven" lazy meal

Do you buy it chopped or just do a load of chopping to freeze? I’m gonna try this as celery often gets half used.

Mine has lots of the above mentioned items, especially lots of bread products, rolls, crumpets, bagels etc.

moderationincludingmoderation · 06/04/2023 21:02

I keep ginger in freezer, just grate whatever I need as and when, & keeps for ages.

Always have whole leaf frozen spinach for curries and omlettes.

Frozen raw prawns - they always Defrost quickly for a last minute stir fry.
