What foods are always in your freezer?

Trying to get more organised so thought it might be useful to share ideas.

We always have veggie burgers and a sliced loaf of our favourite bread, several flavours of ice cream, and some frozen fruit for chucking on breakfast or for smoothies. There's usually a portion or two of something like a lasagne for lunch, that was leftover from a dinner. When we go away I try to always freeze milk so we can always have a cup of tea no matter how late it is when we get home.

What handy items do you always have in that help you throw a meal together? I tried frozen chopped onions which seemed like a really useful timesaver, but they tasted kind of weird to me - maybe I should try them again?

Our freezer is the most under utilised appliance in our house! It’s got some ice cream, vodka, peas and that’s about it. It’s a big double door fridge freezer that’s plumbed in so it does give us ice and water which I love so I don’t mind.

Frozen chopped coriander, mint, fenugreek, peppers, peas and mixed vegetables.Ice-cream in a few flavours and lollipops. Samosas, spring rolls, chicken puff pastries, piccalilli squares and butter chicken pies all home made. Margherita pizza, garlic bread, waffles, fish fingers and fish. I always have frozen meat in the freezer and some curries for when u can't be bothered to cook.

Lovelyring · 08/04/2023 22:31

Chips, peas, mixed veg, meat and fish that I bought on offer, sausages, frozen berries, ice-cream.

Also some meals I've batch cooked (bolognase and curry mostly). And portions of homemade Thai curry paste.

Sohungrynow · 08/04/2023 22:32

Peas
bread
chips
sainsburys meat pie (lush with chips and peas, can be cooked from frozen)
lurpack and butter
milk (1/2 pint in a soup bag defrosts quickly when just home from holiday, or some frozen in ice cube trays)
sausages
chunky fish fingers (because battered fish portions are so dire these days)
peeled and cut parsnips and celeriac (bung frozen in a pan being brought to boil whilst peeling spuds for scrumptious roasties)
any veg that needed using up that can go in a stir fry
cubes of roasted butternut squash to make into a quick soup (when have time to roast the veg but not make the soup).

try and always cook more portions of stews, soups curries etc and freeze the extras which I try and keep in one drawer so just open it browse quickly before going to work and is defrosted by time I get home.

I froze eggs in the pandemic. Found an interesting article on it from US where people lived miles from anywhere and did this for the non laying season.

I cracked two eggs into a ramekin dish, froze, dipped ramekin in boiling water to get the frozen eggs out, froze them in bags. Did a test with a couple first, defrosted a couple of days later and made into an omelette absolutely fine.

froze 36 in total. Defrosted the odd ones during the pandemic and used them. Must admit it was more of an emergency experiment.

We always keep a Camembert in the fridge and part baked bread sticks in the cupboard. Our family go to when we can’t be arsed is baked camembert with chunks of warm bread to dip in it-yummy! Super easy and our 10 year old thinks it’s a real treat.
We also always keep steak in. We have a hot stone so easy supper is bung some chips in the oven with the hot stone cut steak into chunks and everybody cook their own steak on the hot stone at the table.

Hotcrossed · 09/04/2023 07:56

frozen spinach
frozen peas/peppers/sweetcorn

half a loaf of bread
some sort of fish

shockedballoon · 09/04/2023 13:14

Got a larder freezer when we got our kitchen done and it's such a luxury having this much freezer space, so weve got a whole drawer and a half with various leftovers/batch cooked stuff - the rest varies, but these bits are pretty consistent:

ginger & garlic cubes
Bag of freezer spinach
Peas
Sweetcorn
Ongoing bag of chopped coriander (added to if get fresh in or grow some)
Chopped chives from the garden
Supermarket frozen mash
Some form of mince
Bacon
Bag of smoked fish (basa or haddock)
Oven chips
2 Pizzas
Fish fingers
Ice cream (always have vanilla in, sometime other fancy stuff as well)
Bag of frozen berries/ fruit of some sort (currently have mango & strawberries)

Tisfortired · 09/04/2023 13:29

Lots of frozen veg, I also freeze kale and spinach as soon as I buy it to Chuck in stews/curries etc as it never gets eaten fast enough and goes off in the fridge.

couple of pizzas for cba nights, goujons, waffles, smiley faces etc. Also a treat drawer of ice lollies and ice creams, usually a tub of Ben and jerrys or similar.

Ratonastick · 09/04/2023 13:35

Prawns. They’re expensive but easy to cook into something nice from frozen so I buy whenever they are on offer.

“Fresh” herbs. I chop any leftover into bags and keep refilling whenever anything is getting tired. The bottom of some of them have probably been mummified for a decade.

Leftover bits and pieces. Half a tub of cheese sauce, shredded ham, etc. Every so often I go excavating and find something surprising!

Ratonastick · 09/04/2023 13:38

Oh, and industrial quantities of tomato passata. Had a huge glut of tomatoes last year so stewed and sieved about 20 bags!

SunshineLollipopsAndRainbows · 09/04/2023 13:41

I have too much in my freezer so we’re currently trying to eat some of the reduced ready meals & leftovers eg tagine, bolognese sauce etc. I always have oven chips, fishfingers, battered cod/haddock fillets, salmon fillets, chicken Kievs or southern fried chicken pieces, cauliflower cheese grills ( only for me), petitpois, some other frozen veg although for some reason I don’t tend to use much apart from peas & cauliflower cheese ( again just for me). DD14 likes quorn nuggets so I often have those in. Oh & I like minted lamb burgers.

HavfrueDenizKisi · 09/04/2023 13:50

Loaf or two of sliced bread
Pitta bread
Bake from frozen croissants/pain au choc
Ice cream
Peas
Chopped onion
Minced beef
Minced lamb
Sausages
Frozen whole ginger
Oven chips
Halloumi
Frozen raspberries/mango

recklessgran · 09/04/2023 13:55

Bread split into zip lock bags as only DH eats it and saves waste.
Selection of M & S ready meals in case only one eating/ someone in a hurry etc
Selection of frozen potato things - hash browns, croquettes, crinkle cut chips, waffles etc
Frozen peas
Various fish - fish fingers, salmon, basa fillets, sea bass
Packs of steak mince for cottage pie, lasagne, bolognaise etc
Chicken mini fillets - versatile for pan frying and having with a sauce, making curry, casserole or chicken pie.
A few joints of half price beef from Tecoss current offer.
Ready made Yorkshires
A couple of quiches and pizzas
Frozen raspberries
Ice cream, choc ices and magnums.
That's about it - could survive for a couple of weeks eating from freezer. Occasionally do eat the freezer week to use up stuff festering in there.
Mmm - that's funny - I didn't think I made much use of the freezer but reading that back it looks as though actually I do!

Redminionpenguin · 09/04/2023 14:13

Frozen veg such as peas, cauliflower, green beans.
Chopped onions and peppers.
Bread.
Milk.
Chicken pieces.
Mince.
Frozen meals that I've batch cooked.

I struggle to get to the shops as I'm a disabled single parent. I have an online delivery every 8 days, so need enough food for me and 3 teens to last that long. It has helped me be extra organised, meal plan and order in advance.

TarasHarp55 · 09/04/2023 14:17

oven chips, onions, peas.

cobblers123 · 09/04/2023 14:30

Raspberries, blueberries, blackberries and currently some pineapple.

Garden peas, bread.

The rest of the freezer varies with meat and fish and also some vegetarian things.

Why don't you crack them into a bag and freeze them straight in the bag?
