What foods are always in your freezer?

Trying to get more organised so thought it might be useful to share ideas.

We always have veggie burgers and a sliced loaf of our favourite bread, several flavours of ice cream, and some frozen fruit for chucking on breakfast or for smoothies. There's usually a portion or two of something like a lasagne for lunch, that was leftover from a dinner. When we go away I try to always freeze milk so we can always have a cup of tea no matter how late it is when we get home.

What handy items do you always have in that help you throw a meal together? I tried frozen chopped onions which seemed like a really useful timesaver, but they tasted kind of weird to me - maybe I should try them again?

various unlabelled meals

Known in our house as Freezer Roulette

Thelnebriati · 07/04/2023 10:42

Red wine slush, its my favourite for adding to tomato sauces.
A few portions of meals which I batch cooked.
I buy huge blocks of cheese, cut it up and freeze it.
Fresh herbs and ginger.
Chicken broth.

PussBilledDuckyPlait · 07/04/2023 10:50

Random thing that's come out of its packet and we're not sure what it is.

Otherwise, just frozen veg as a constant, everything else is bought for specific use.

specialk9 · 07/04/2023 11:04

Fish cakes, fish fingers, chicken nuggets, some meat we haven't got around to eating.
Peas, sweetcorn, cauli cheese, chips, hash brown, pizza, mash
Microwave meal x 2 for emergency meals
Ice cream, ice cream cones, lollies, ice

Basically I keep in there everything I can make for a dinner if we had no fresh food in.

AuntiesWoodenLeg · 07/04/2023 11:24

I live alone but still cook like the family's here, so usually have about 20 surplus portions of homemade soups, pasta sauces, curries. Handy when I can't be bothered cooking. Also frozen basics like chopped onions, leeks and peppers, bags of sweetcorn, peas, broccoli, broadbeans, bag of prawns, a few portions of turkey and fish. And some frozen cooked soy beans from when I had a go at making my own soy milk, but couldn't face doing a second batch...😬

zingally · 07/04/2023 11:31

Not a lot tbh! Usually have some frozen chips, icecream, maybe some bread. Often have Frubes in there, as the kids like them frozen for pudding sometimes.

Otherwise it's just a mishmash!

Chicken Thighs/breasts
Good quality breaded/battered chicken chunks
Bread
Milk
A kilo of bacon
4 lb sausages
Casserole veg mix
Chopped onions and peppers
Home fry chips
A few boxes of frozen chips
Petitpois
Butter
Crumpets

I also have a very stocked larder as I have several auto immune diseases and have been caught out in a flare before. Plus I'm on some benefits and live in total fear of my money suddenly stopping for whatever reason. If that happens it can take weeks/months to sort out so I love a buffer to put my mind at ease.

Imisssleep2 · 08/04/2023 20:40

More for my toddler than me, but i make a big batch of mashed potato and freeze in toddler portions for quickness when in a rush. I also buy my chicken in bulk as cheaper and freeze in different marinades. Make a big batch of Bolognese so we can eat some and freeze spare batches for either spaghetti Bolognese or to be made into lasagna, also do the same with sweet and sour chicken, and meat part of cottage pie.

Frankola · 08/04/2023 20:41

Frozen jacket potato's. An obsession in my house.

Tinylove23 · 08/04/2023 20:48

Bread so it doesn't go mouldy.

GlassBunion · 08/04/2023 21:08

Peas
Spinach
Batch cooked meals
Croissants
Joints bought cheaply for when we have family days
Mince
Bread
Rolls
Fish fingers

HildasLostSock · 08/04/2023 21:14

Peas, chips, fish fingers, chopped garlic, breaded chicken strips (if I have wraps in the cupboard & salad in the fridge I use the chicken strips to make wraps if I can't be bothered to cook). Home made veggie pasta sauce frozen in individual portion sizes. I used to have frozen chopped onion & frozen mince (bought already frozen, so I can use just a handful if that's all I want eg DC5 says they want spag bol for dinner I can make a child size portion using that at short notice) but DC has gone off spag bol for now - if it comes back into favour I'll likely have a regular stock of them again..

IhearyouClemFandango · 08/04/2023 21:26

Oven chips, ice cream, frozen veg, bread, a few quick dinners like oven cod, scampi, pizza etc as well chicken breasts, mince, and a load of veggie foods for my teens.

willstarttomorrow · 08/04/2023 21:50

Yellow ticket items and since becoming a lone parent working full time, frozen chopped onions, garlic, ginger and herbs and mashed potatoes because I can then throw stuff together in very little time. Alongside oven chips, nuggets to make a quick wrap and salmon because it is so quick and easy to make a meal from. Also any amazing deal from Heron Foods (miss Jack Fultons)!!!! That maybe a niche Northern reference.

Cherrysoup · 08/04/2023 21:51

Bread
Milk
Rolls for burgers
Chicken breasts
Chips
Ice cubes
Vodka-several varieties
Faggots
Lots of dog food (they're raw fed)

Leftbutcameback · 08/04/2023 21:53

Frozen fish - usually tuna steaks and salmon fillets. Much cheaper than fresh fish. Cook from frozen in the air fryer (wrapped in foil) for an easy dinner with rice.

IntheJingelyJangelyJungle · 08/04/2023 21:53

Donotgogentle · 06/04/2023 20:58

Soffrito - use it for so much cooking - bolognaise, soups, curry.

It makes for much less food waste as I don’t need to have onions, carrots & celery in stock. And it’s easy.

Ooooo I like this tip!!!! I never have celery when I need it for a soffrito! 👏

Leftbutcameback · 08/04/2023 21:54

Also hash brown waffles which I love!
