to point out that one Y chromosome does not make you a male

Nimbostratus100 · 06/04/2023 09:53

In response to other posts insisting that one genetic test and one Y chromosome makes an athlete indisputably male with no room for error, I just want to point out that it not true.

There is always genetic exchange, for example, between a mother and baby, so anyone who has had a son will still have Y chromosomes in some cells in their body, and that will possibly show up in a genetic screening.

I am all for keeping men out of women's sport, and defining them genetically, but please lets not go over the top - one test does not prove you are male

this is exactly what I mean by aggression.

You think the phrase "crack on" is aggressive?

Goodness.

This may freak OP out even more; my body contains cow DNA, and tomato DNA, and lettuce DNA, and wheat DNA, and….

IfIHadAHeart · 06/04/2023 12:46

I just want to say thank you, OP.

I’ve been having a bit of a shit time of late, and have really struggled to find anything to smile about. This thread has had me chuckling away. I’m not sure that’s what you intended when posting it…

I would love to hear more about your background in genetics, just so I can steer my DC towards a different university etc.

You win the thread.

monsteramunch · 06/04/2023 12:47

Are you going to say any athlete can enter the woman's game, if they claim to have given birth in the past?

Look at the logistics of it! All anyone would have to do is make that claim, free pass to woman's sport!

If someone can produce medical records they gave birth, to back up their claim they have done so, that would seem like a pretty logical way to satisfy burden of proof.

Shelefttheweb · 06/04/2023 12:50

I have to say, I am impressed that OP hung around to try and argue their point. Most TRAs drop what they presume is a gotcha and then leave, especially when women disagree (aka ‘are aggressive and hysterical’)

Nimbostratus100 · 06/04/2023 10:26

The levels of hostility and ignorance on this thread is exactly what I am talking about.

This just makes woman who are defending womans rights look aggressive, and stupid

How does that help?

Hahaha. You're talking about women on this thread being aggressive and stupid, when

a) you don't know they're women
b) you're the only one throwing out insults and not engaging with reasoned points.

Genevieva · 06/04/2023 12:53

@Shelefttheweb Truly inspired! Love your comment.

I cant write any more right now . I tried to keep up with the posts but they were coming too fast. I will try and catch up later, if there are not too many posts.

But I hope at least some people understand the results of testing a bit better now

Hahahaha just at the point you were asked to explain what happened to your friend. Great timing.

FatFucker · 06/04/2023 12:44

I normally can't be assed with these type of threads as they are so obviously TRAs, but this one is just hilarious!!

He's meant to be a geneticist, who's had a female friend who wasn't allowed to race as she tested as male!

I'm loving it! I knew NOTHING about genetics but suspect a hell of lot more than the OP, after reading some of the really interesting PPs.

Oh, for sure, this never happened to the op 😂

Couple a DNA test with a questionnaire including a question,
"Have you ever been pregnant or given birth?"
That should increase the accuracy.

😂😂😂😂

NonHypotheticalLurkingParent · 06/04/2023 12:56

No one’s disputing the science - it’s the methodology. Your analogy from forensics of testing a swab from a door handle is flawed. That door handle was probably not clean to start with so the cells found might be from any number of people with any number of chromosomes. Even a swab from a clean door handle is going to be looking at a minuscule number of cells - there’s a tiny possibility that there will be an XY amongst the XX. Due to the small sample size - it’ll skew the results.

Testing athletes will involve a much larger number of cells - not taken from a door knob. A few random XY cells does not mean the athlete is male.

I’m made up of atoms which have empty spaces between them - a wall is made up of atoms that has spaces between them. Theoretically, if all the empty spaces aligned I could walk through the wall. The chance of this happening is infinitesimal, probably the same chance as a cheek swab for female who’s given birth to male giving a result of 100% XY chromosomes.

As opposed to those nice TRA's that say no debate and send death and rape threats to JKR?

Kucinghitam · 06/04/2023 13:02

I think in OP's fantasy genetics lab, the methodology comprises <CSI-style science-y montage involving incorrect use of Gilson pipettes and coloured water> followed by a machine with blinking coloured LEDs, then a computer monitor with that 1980s green pixellated text says 'Y-chromosome detected!' a spinning red light on the ceiling illuminates and the PA system blares AWOOGA AWOOGA and white-coated minions scramble out to tackle the unfortunate test subject to the floor shouting "She's a man!!!"

itsgettingweird · 06/04/2023 13:05

If necessary, they will summon the athlete for a further test. What they will not do is post:

Tracey Jones has got a Y chromosome, OMG!

on Twitter.

Omg this thread keeps giving 🤣

Shelefttheweb · 06/04/2023 13:06

Forensics looking at DNA from a door knob are unlikely to stop at whether or not a person who touched it was male - knowing a male touched a door knob is unlikely to be very helpful in an investigation. They would be looking for the whole DNA profile (or as much as they could retrieve)

MrsOvertonsWindow · 06/04/2023 13:06

This is not about genetics - it's a tone policing thread. Look at how many times the OP used the words "hostile, aggressive, abuse, looking and acting stupid, pointless, ignorance" to describe posters. Our self identified "geneticist" is yet another trans activist using cod science to lecture and berate women.

But it's a very funny thread so thanks for that OP 😂😂

Eranzer · 06/04/2023 13:08

SNWannabe · 06/04/2023 10:19

Ummm, if you've carried and birthed a baby boy...I would say that has cleared up any question of "are you male or female?" anyway...surely? I am not a geneticist though.

😂😂😂

Best not to use a 15 years old reference to prove a point. Has this work been replicated more recently? Have other authos come to the same conlusion since 2007? If so, please direct us to the research
Also, this is, as are many similar studies, in the murine model. so not necessarily applicable to humans

Lol. You’ve made yourself sound very foolish.

No, more sophisticated than that these days - it will like those drug testing swabs you see them tack on those border control programs. You wipe the suitcase/door knob/elite athlete then pop it in the machine, wait a few seconds for suspense and a red pop up box appears on the screen say ephedrine/cannibis/y chromosome.

I think I've seen that episode. Doesn't the boss lift up his sunglasses squint into the camera and say 'you had just as much of a chance of being a man as I had of being a redhead'.

It's not having a Y chromosome that gives an advantage, its the levels of testosterone you're exposed to, particularly through puberty.

You also have people who are genetically male, but the body can't make or respond to the testosterone, and that person may be identified as female at birth and not realise until they have infertility or don't start periods.

If it wasn't for the fact that going through puberty with testosterone gave such an advantage I'd have no issue with sports having testosterone level groupings similar to how weight classes are used in some sports 🤷‍♀️.
