to point out that one Y chromosome does not make you a male

Nimbostratus100 · 06/04/2023 09:53

In response to other posts insisting that one genetic test and one Y chromosome makes an athlete indisputably male with no room for error, I just want to point out that it not true.

There is always genetic exchange, for example, between a mother and baby, so anyone who has had a son will still have Y chromosomes in some cells in their body, and that will possibly show up in a genetic screening.

I am all for keeping men out of women's sport, and defining them genetically, but please lets not go over the top - one test does not prove you are male

And if I have a son and a male cat, will I test as a tomcat?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Actually just spat coffee out at that and then my iPad tried to record a spoken message on here 🤣🤣🤷‍♀️

Is that what's happened to your friend OP. Poor bloke.

😂😂

🤣🤣🤣

Mic drop, that's the end of the thread now.

Bikeybikeface · 06/04/2023 12:26

OP, can you give an example where this has happened so we can understand the point you are trying to make? Where you are coming from?

Genevieva · 06/04/2023 12:26

Having residual DNA in your body from bearing children doesn't change a woman's own DNA.

Foodie6 · 06/04/2023 12:23

Thank you OP for educating me on microchimerism because I for one had no idea that was a thing (I'm sure a lot of people here had no clue either).

No idea why everyone is mocking you. Well I do this is Mumsnet afterall. If an elite female athlete went through genetic testing and Daily Fail released a vague article saying they need to go for further testing with no other details, this forum would be the first place that a thread would appear insisting they need to be ousted from the sport immediately.

I think if an athlete like Laura Muir was report d as needing more tests it would be HIGHLY UNLIKELY anyone would assume it's because she shagged her male uni friend a few years ago and now has a stray Y chromosome and is actually a man.

They'd probably assume some drug cheating going on.

That's been proven often.

I actually also now want to know that statistics between who drug cheats the most. Males or females.

The problem is the abuse and suspicion directed at women who end up needing the further testing.

Which women are they, then? You yourself have said that testing is blind, the samples go into coded phials, then to a laboratory, where they are tested. This is a confidential process.

If there is a problem, or something suspect, the lab will send the details to the relevant authority, which will cross reference the code with their database.

If necessary, they will summon the athlete for a further test. What they will not do is post:

Tracey Jones has got a Y chromosome, OMG!

on Twitter.

And as everyone else has already said, the laboratory staff will be well aware that a tiny %ge of her cells may be male. (They're not repurposed bin men and perfume counter ladies). As in forensic analysis, (mentioned by you, several times) the sample can be subjected to a DNA test and the photogram of the resulting set of bars in a gel electrophoresis bath will show:

Ta da! The genetic profiles of two different people, to wit, mammy and bairn.

If I, a geology graduate, can remember that from university biology classes 29 years ago, I'm probably set for a new career as a geneticist!

Madamecastafiore · 06/04/2023 12:31

I'm a geneticist too and you're talking bollocks (well actually I'm not but I still call bullshit on you being a geneticist).

BloodyHellKen · 06/04/2023 12:32

OP, please tell me you work for Labour/Lib Dems/Greens and this sort of thing you speak of will be used in their manifesto for the next GE 😂

ZombieMumEB · 06/04/2023 12:33

The OP has probably watched a few TikToks and believes they are now a qualified geneticist.

daisy1765 · 06/04/2023 12:35

the OP is a geneticist? HmmHmm
Yeah, obviously.

You might if they are swabbing your door knobs after you petted the cat.

Genevieva · 06/04/2023 12:37

Unlike drugs testing, genetic testing for athlete is not a common practice. Indeed, genetic tests are not widely used to prove someone's biological sex in any area of life. The reason is obvious - unless someone has problematic clinical symptoms that suggest a DNA test is necessary, it simply isn't necessary. Biological sex is physically apparent. Whether someone has a second X or a Y chromosome has a large and obvious impact on our physiology. With this in mind, your post seems pointless.

titchy · 06/04/2023 12:37

I'm a geneticist and so's my wife!

Onegingerhead · 06/04/2023 12:40

So it’s actually normal PCR they do, not qPCR? Either way it would give an extremely, extremely thin Y chr band in case of microchimerism methinks. Similar to low level contamination.
No idea how they actually do the test, but would be interesting to design one that takes the (potential) issue into equation. But prolly it already exists

You’re not a geneticist, you’re a very naughty…

hold on, let me check your karyotype…

Mumsnetter!

Hankunamatata · 06/04/2023 12:40

Surely if there is an issue with cheek swab test then they follow up with blood test.

YouJustDoYou · 06/04/2023 12:42

I love how so many TRAs suddenly become either "medical personnel" or "biologists" to "prove" their viewpoint 😂

PriOn1 · 06/04/2023 12:42

The problem is the attitudes of some women, who dont really understand the genetics, reacting so angrily to athletes who need more than one test.

Ah yes. Those famous cases where testing for sex has occurred, it has been reported in the Daily Mail that a single Y chromosome has been found, and women have reacted angrily in a public way.

Presumably OP (and the poster who spuriously introduced the Daily Mail) can show the tweets or other social media posts where this unlikely sequence of events occurred?

user1492757084 · 06/04/2023 12:44

Couple a DNA test with a questionnaire including a question,
"Have you ever been pregnant or given birth?"
That should increase the accuracy.

FatFucker · 06/04/2023 12:44

I normally can't be assed with these type of threads as they are so obviously TRAs, but this one is just hilarious!!

He's meant to be a geneticist, who's had a female friend who wasn't allowed to race as she tested as male!

I'm loving it! I knew NOTHING about genetics but suspect a hell of lot more than the OP, after reading some of the really interesting PPs.
