to point out that one Y chromosome does not make you a male

In response to other posts insisting that one genetic test and one Y chromosome makes an athlete indisputably male with no room for error, I just want to point out that it not true.

There is always genetic exchange, for example, between a mother and baby, so anyone who has had a son will still have Y chromosomes in some cells in their body, and that will possibly show up in a genetic screening.

I am all for keeping men out of women's sport, and defining them genetically, but please lets not go over the top - one test does not prove you are male

I have no intention of losing my temper in the face of deliberate goading which cleverly skirts round the Talk Guidelines.

Have a pleasant evening.

This is such a weird thread.

OP - microchimerism is a thing
MN scientists - yeah we know
OP - my mate had one Y chromosome in a sample and got shamed and abused
MN - really? Normally they just investigate further. Tell us more.
OP - you're all ignorant and abusive <flounces>

Grin

You missed out a few intermediate steps.

OP - I'm a Geneticist, dontcha know?
MN - Chinny reckon Hmm
OP - Not only that, but I'm the only MNer who has higher than GCSE Biology! <flounces again>

OP <flounces> due to post op something or other resulting in an inability to type and thus fails to explain why their mate had fallen foul of those pesky Y chromosomes.

Meanwhile, OP has been busy on other threads at all hours helpfully explaining asexuality and the UK’s education system.

Op is nearly 60 she said earlier so plenty of time for all her careers 🤣

See, I can understand recognising someone I know online, and then being able to say that I know they are who they say they are, but I don’t know how I would know that a friend knew them.

I can’t imagine reading this and then messaging a friend and saying
‘hey, do you know someone who chats shit online claiming to be a maths teacher and a geneticist?’
‘why yes I do. Well I know someone who is an adult woman who chats shit on anonymous forums and could be anywhere in the world but I’m not sure if she’s a geneticist, or a maths teacher’.
‘that’s her’.

ilovesooty · 07/04/2023 23:16

@PriamFarrl it wasn't at all like that, but I can't explain why it wasn't.

I had awareness of the OP before this thread.

If a poster is going to post conflicting info about who they are/what they do, then it’s tough luck if someone calls them out. Especially if they’re trying to shut down other opinions (or, more importantly, knowledge) down.

Troll-hunting guidelines must be a nightmare to enforce. I prefer troll-type posts to stand, and to see the arguments against them. But it’s a balance against giving the buggers “air-time”.

Anyway, good to see that OP must be feeling better after their surgery and able to post elsewhere (whilst inserting a caveat that hostility and aggression is expected). At least they’re cracking on with things.

tractorreactor · 08/04/2023 11:01

My personal opinion is that only female/women can give birth. That's the measure I'd take when considering why a female may have a Y chromosome floating around. Shame it's all seemed to have become so complicated. No need for cheek swabs at all on mothers really is there...

sst1234 · 08/04/2023 11:29

More linguistic contortionism over what makes a man a man and a woman a woman. There are only two sexes. The absence of something regular from a man or a woman doesn’t make them something else. It just means they have an abnormality, but still a man or woman.
