Amsterdam has a new Ad campaign telling young Brits looking for a messy night out to stay away

It's pretty bad when there had to be an actual ad campaign?

Do you think it's fair that only British people are targeted?

I spend a lot of time in Amsterdam for work reasons and the british "blokes abroad" there are a total embarrassment. It's a beautiful city and severely blighted by the twats who go there for the red light and drugs scene.

Nimbostratus100 · 29/03/2023 18:46

Knowing friends in Amsterdam, there are many aspects of the city's drug culture that make their lives miserable - this is tackling one of them

ReneBumsWombats · 29/03/2023 18:48

Yes. I can't count the number of times I've been mortified in Europe and elsewhere by obnoxious Brits.

thewooster · 29/03/2023 19:02

What do the Dutch expect? They offer booze, drugs and women for sale and then moan when the morons turn up!

BulldogSpirit · 30/03/2023 06:36

I read they are targeting Brits first as obviously we make up the larger proportion of the stag tourists, but will then turn their attention to other EU nations.

However, who are they trying to attract with their women in windows and drug cafes? Families? Boomers with lots of dosh? Honeymooners?

They built the city on sex and drugs and now they complain. They need to 'ave a word with themselves😂

Tinybrother · 30/03/2023 06:39

They need to stop catering for them then

DutchKatje · 30/03/2023 06:56

I’ve been to Amsterdam many times with my dc and it is a family friendly city, as well as the other stuff which is in one area and avoidable.

I know there has been a recent effort to clean up the city’s image.

There is not much detail in the article but I imagine Brits are being targeted because unfortunately their behaviour is more excessive.

thegrain · 30/03/2023 06:57

Seems fair enough

thewooster · 30/03/2023 07:02

But if they still offer women for sale for sex and drugs are smoked freely, they will never stamp out the punters/dopeheads.

MelchiorsMistress · 30/03/2023 07:04

Unfortunately it is fair. British people can be a complete embarrassment when they’re abroad.

elgreco · 30/03/2023 07:07

I agree with those suggesting advertising women for sale and expecting decent males only to turn up is fucking absurd.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/03/2023 07:09

Yesterday on Jeremy Vine radio show, a woman rang in from Amsterdam. She had moved out of the city because of UK stag parties. She said people do visit the red light district but don’t usually behave like the stag parties. It’s more discreet, so makes you wonder.

She also said she had men putting their dicks through her letter box and she had enough.

So, yes I think UK stag parties probably are disrespectful.

Xrays · 30/03/2023 07:09

Have to wonder if this is some genius reverse psychology campaign… of course young brits are going to want to go if people tell them not to!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 30/03/2023 07:12

She also said that in Holland if you drink more than 3 units a week you are classed as an alcoholic. Which I found incredible.

Devoutspoken · 30/03/2023 07:16

Maybe they just get stoned instead

SageHoney · 30/03/2023 07:18

Primarily, the Netherlands is at fault for being utter misogynist clowns. Yes, it's embarrassing that British misogynist clowns show up to lap it up, but that's not the main/core problem.

I guess it's easier to deal with drunk Brit tourists than the traffickers 🤷🏻‍♀️

That's what I was thinking, a little ad at the top of the page is hardly going to put these lads off.

If they want to clean up the city's reputation, they need to stop the prostitution, drugs etc at source.

LunaNorth · 30/03/2023 07:26

How’s that going to work?

’Let’s go to Amsterdam on holiday! LADS LADS LADS!’

’Oh, hang on Gary, I’ve just seen an advert saying ‘stay away’ ‘

’Oh. Let’s go to Florence for some culture then.’

but as always, it is not the people who made these decisions who are living with the consequences. The people who "built the city on sex and drugs" are a) a different generation, b) a different demographic and c) in a different location to the ones complaining.

Amsterdam's "sex and drugs" reputation has always been a nightmare for the normal residents. It wasn't until the dead bodies of addicts starting drifting along canals into wealthy areas that anything was ever acknowledged, and then mostly what happened is richer people moved away from being downstream where the bodies keep ending up

Tutulechapeau · 30/03/2023 07:33

Poor old brits always the victims.
Many of them show complete disrespect for the country and people they are visiting, doubt they behave like that over here where there aren't decriminalised drugs or legalised prostitution.
Oh wait....

Exasperatednow · 30/03/2023 07:33

Yep, it is fair.

thewooster · 30/03/2023 07:34

Plus they allow women to sell themselves and they rely on the income, so what happens when punters are restricted. Who helps them when their income is halved.

I don't like the idea of women offering their bodies in windows but if the
Dutch allow it, they should realise they need punters. Same with the drug cafes.

Brits might be arseholes, but they are cashed-up arseholes and these trades rely on them.

A better idea would be to stop offering women as goods.

Beantag · 30/03/2023 07:41

thewooster · 30/03/2023 07:02

Quite.

I have travelled extensively over the years, and whilst yes some Brits behave appallingly abroad, its certainly not unique to us. Plenty of terrible, rude, arrogant, drunken behaviour from people from other places too- curious why they aren't taking actual steps to address the behaviour they are trying to dissuade such as stop exploiting women.
