Amsterdam has a new Ad campaign telling young Brits looking for a messy night out to stay away

It's pretty bad when there had to be an actual ad campaign?

Do you think it's fair that only British people are targeted?

I’ve lived there and it is a beautiful city. However, if you are going to devote an entire district to windowed psrotitition, sell pre prepared assortments of cannabis and magic mushrooms etc in bars … I’ve no idea what types of tourists you’re expecting to attract and it’s hardly a surprise that they’re of the more ‘boisterous’ nature.

This. I'm pro legalisation. I've been to Amsterdam twice.

It's fair to stay they've taken advantage of this for years. If you dedicate a whole district to not 'coffee shops', let's be clear a lot are not, they are also BARS to encourage alcohol use alongside cannabis, and then add in sex on show every where you're going to encourage a certain type of visitor.

If they no longer want that, then they need to start closing down and moving businesses to that there's not a dedicated entire district purpose built for this behaviour.

BitchBrigade · 30/03/2023 10:23

Of course it's fair to blame the brits. One country complaining might be unfair. This is now one of multiple.

What's that saying? If more than one or two people tell you that you are the problem, then you might be the problem?

Funny how other nations tourists can control themselves perfectly fine....

They don't. HTH.

Theresamooselooseabootthishoose · 30/03/2023 10:29

Everytime I’ve been the Italians were far worse in their behaviour.. goading the women, heavy drug use, obnoxious etc. Not to say brits aren’t bad, because I’ve cringed at some sights when there but I’ve noticed they’re more lairy and the bark is worse than the bite however I’ve been made to feel really uneasy with Italian men in Amsterdam. I still love the place and think of it with fond memories, beautiful city and so much more than the red light and great drugs 😆

May I ask for opinions on a slightly wider issue?
I, and people I know, have certainly witnessed totally obnoxious behaviour from drunken Brits abroad. I have actually felt embarrassed and ashamed.
We also see it in the media, and I might have been tempted to accuse the media of exaggerating the extent of the problem had I not seen it for myself.
Other people say that it is definitely not just the Brits who behave like this, and that it's unfair to blame them, and no other nationality.
I don't honestly know if that's true or not.
But, if it is us Brits who are the worst behaved, why is that?
I've often wondered about this, and I honestly don't know.

I haven't gone on a single foreign holiday in 25 years (since I was a child) to any of the "hot" destinations where there hasn't been at least ONE group of obnoxious British twats ruining it for everyone around them.

Even Centre Parcs isn't safe. Or Butlins. It's a 100% British thing and it's disgusting.

DutchKatje · 30/03/2023 10:38

Well we can speculate on what other nationals get up to all we like but the Dutch have decided to crack down on antisocial behaviour in Amsterdam and groups of male British tourists are their first target.

Just because a country decides to legalise certain activities, it’s not an excuse to turn up and behave badly.

LimitIsUp · 30/03/2023 08:51

Well I'm going as a tourist and I am visiting the Van Gogh museum, the Anne Frank museum, the Keukenhof Gardens 🤷‍♀️ I am going mid week rather than at the weekend though - deliberately.

You are looking for a different experience of the city. Hope you have a wonderful time. My point is, people can’t peruse sec workers gyrating in full few, they can’t get openly and legally stoned, drunk and full of mushrooms etc in other European cities, not so openly at least. It’s on a plate there and that’s why it attracts so many folk ‘like that’ and then they get too drunk, too high, vomit everywhere etc…. They go to Amsterdam for that very reason, I won’t know why a city would provide this and then be surprised they attract a certain type.

Maedan · 30/03/2023 11:26

I love Amsterdam, have friends there and have spent a lot of time there over the years. Love to pop by a coffee shop occasionally or go have a few drinks but nothing wild. The groups of Brits I see are an embarrassment, I pretend I'm Canadian 😂🤣 I hope the ads work!

MarquessofPembroke · 30/03/2023 08:44

a lady dropping her knickers in the street for a piss. We’re a classy nation!

oh give over. How many British women would ever do that?

Men literally piss wherever they like when they are drunk. Can't get too aerated about a drunk woman doing it when there are whole streets in town centres smelling like urinals because of men

vinividivinci · 30/03/2023 11:44

I think its great. We should create some ads to deter people from coming to UK stag/hen cities e.g. Blackpool, York, Newcastle and so on.

StarmanBobby · 30/03/2023 11:46

It's young British MEN they want to get rid of.
Dublin had the same issue - pissed up mainland UK stag and hen do's making the Temple Bar and city centre a nightmare for everyone else.
Bars started banning groups - that really helped.

StarmanBobby · 30/03/2023 11:48

Any way - why the offence? They're targetting ads at Uk and Italy saying don't come here for a 'messy' night or you'll get in trouble. We're cracking down. Seems fair to me!

I have never heard of any Dutch person wanting to have a stag do there. So you're safe...

carriedout · 30/03/2023 11:50

It is only people who behave badly that they don't want, they are happy to welcome anyone who behaves reasonably.

These are usually UK people I think?

I do not actually know the stag culture of other nations, but in the City nearest me that gets loads of stag parties, they appear to be almost all UK stag parties.

Brefugee · 30/03/2023 11:51

they're starting with what they perceive as the biggest problem and will move onto others when they have tackled that.

But have any of you actually been to Amsterdam? it isn't wall to wall Coffee Shops and windows full of prostitutes. I haven't been there for a while, but AFAIK the coffee shops nearest us (I'm not in NL but live in the border region so the rules may be different) require NL ID before you're allowed to use them.

Comefromaway · 30/03/2023 11:53

Dd went to Holland recently as a 21st birthday present to herself. She didn't go to Amsterdam but instead visited friends and went to places like Rotterdam (she had been on two school trips there and kept in touch with the families who hosted her).

When she arrived she was questioned as to where she was going, had to show details of where she was staying etc etc and warned that when she left the country she and her car were likely to be thoroughly searched (and she was).

I completely agree, not sure why you thought my post was saying otherwise.

Sorry Cats I was agreeing with you. Need to work on my delivery Grin

whumpthereitis · 30/03/2023 11:55

Is it fair to target the Brits? Well yes, if they’re the ones predominantly causing the issues. That isn’t to say that other nationalities behave perfectly, but that more problem are caused by the British.

I doubt it has much if anything to do with brexit, given that the bad reputation of the horribly behaved British abroad has been known for years.

Theluggage15 · 30/03/2023 11:59

Amsterdam is lovely but the Dutch have caused this problem. They’re very on board with sex and drugs trafficking.

It's not at all uncommon in Brighton on a Friday or Saturday night.

A friend has a basement flat in a quiet side street, and she's often looked out of her front window, thinking she can hear rain, only to see someone squatting and having a piss on the pavement outside her house.

I think most people outside of UK never even heard of Blackpool tbh....
It's not customary in most places to go on piss up stag abroad as well

teomama · 30/03/2023 12:00

Lol, what do you expect when you have legal prostitution and drugs is a bit like, what did this woman expect, not to be raped when she's wearing such a short skirt.

Amsterdam has world class museums, architecture, art scene, restaurant scene. Mesmerizing flower gardens in the outskirts of the city. All of these are valid reasons to visit.

It's never cool to stereotype, but unfortunately young British tourists are famous all around Europe for their excessive drinking and rude behavior. I have a friend who's married for a Czech lady and lives in Prague, and trust me, they are more than tired of the stag dos of British lads. Sure, there's a profit to be made here, but that doesn't make this particular group any more likeable.

Brefugee · 30/03/2023 12:02

There's a Sex Workers Union in the UK too - doesn't stop them being raped, beaten, degraded.

but it's still illegal in the UK isn't it? It's not called the oldest profession for nothing, is it? At least where it is legal there is a chance that at least some of the women will have health insurance and pensions (Germany) and a health certificate to be able to work in the regulated establishments (pretty much like a food hygiene certificate for a chef)

I'm not a fan of prostitution, but i'm not daft. I would rather that if we have prostitution that there is at least some effort to make it at least a little less awful for at least some of the people involved.

The sheer arrogance of people saying "well Amsterdam shouldn't have prostitutes or coffee shops" is staggering. Spain is starting to tackle the issue of drunken hoardes, and it's several years since the mayor of Prague literally asked the Brits to stay away (and afaik it is difficult to make stag/hen party bookings there even now)

And sure, other nationalities are an issue. But i trust the the Mayor or Prague or Amsterdam or Mallorca or wherever to make their own judgement calls.

WalkAwaySugarbear · 30/03/2023 12:07

I'm with the Dutch there too and been to Amsterdam many times during my 20s. I was with DH and some friends, we weren't wild but saw plenty of (british) nobheads.

It's a lovely city and I'd love to go back.
