Amsterdam has a new Ad campaign telling young Brits looking for a messy night out to stay away

It's pretty bad when there had to be an actual ad campaign?

Do you think it's fair that only British people are targeted?

Sorry, my last post was badly written. I just meant light-heartedly, that perhaps we could do with a bit of a clamp down on some of the rowdy stag and hen parties here.

JacobsCrackersCheeseFogg · 30/03/2023 12:15

I like Amsterdam. I knew it well in the late 90s. Probably changed now...but like any city, if you go looking for sex and drugs, you'll find it. It's just in Amsterdam, it's blatantly advertised. Like any city, there are seedy parts. I didn't like Montmartre in Paris because of the sex shows. I felt uncomfortable. I have visited the RLD in Amsterdam once, thought it was seedy and crap, so avoided it since.

I like the canals, museums, markets, shops, restaurants...in Amsterdam.

LakieLady · 30/03/2023 12:23

Brefugee · 30/03/2023 11:51

they're starting with what they perceive as the biggest problem and will move onto others when they have tackled that.

But have any of you actually been to Amsterdam? it isn't wall to wall Coffee Shops and windows full of prostitutes. I haven't been there for a while, but AFAIK the coffee shops nearest us (I'm not in NL but live in the border region so the rules may be different) require NL ID before you're allowed to use them.

I haven't been to Amsterdam since approx 2005, but went several times in the 80s and 90s. The city just seemed to be getting seedier and seedier, and the last time I went, I didn't feel comfortable east of Singel in the evening. The whole central area was starting to have an atmosphere like the red light district, just without the prostitutes. Never had any problems getting served in coffee shops.

It's a beautiful city, and there's so much to see. I hope this doesn't put other travellers off going.

teomama · 30/03/2023 12:00

Lol, what do you expect when you have legal prostitution and drugs is a bit like, what did this woman expect, not to be raped when she's wearing such a short skirt.

Amsterdam has world class museums, architecture, art scene, restaurant scene. Mesmerizing flower gardens in the outskirts of the city. All of these are valid reasons to visit.

It's never cool to stereotype, but unfortunately young British tourists are famous all around Europe for their excessive drinking and rude behavior. I have a friend who's married for a Czech lady and lives in Prague, and trust me, they are more than tired of the stag dos of British lads. Sure, there's a profit to be made here, but that doesn't make this particular group any more likeable.

Yeah...but what do you envisage when you think of Amsterdam? Piss ups, stoners and blokes buying sex.

The Dutch built it and now they are running around like headless chickens blaming the Brits who contribute to the problem but not solely. Who they going to blame once the Brits are gone and the problem continues, because it will. Men all over Europe will still stagger around the streets (speaking English) and gawp at the sexxxy happy ladies in the window who love sex with them.

The Dutch need to take a look at what the shop windows and cafes offer and have a think to themselves...hmmm...maybe this is our own fault.

Absolute fools.

teomama · 30/03/2023 12:57

Cant agree here. I’ve been to Amsterdam many times and zero of them have been associated with drugs/prostitution/excessive drinking. It’s in their hands to change that perception though, that’s very true.

Tg2023 · 30/03/2023 13:17

Yes yes of course it's the British couldn't possibly be other European tourists being drunk, rowdy and obviously we all know that only us English lasses are the ones who pull down our knickers and piss in the streets! Never & I mean never has a tourists from another nation done this is some other country. It's simple unheard unless it us disgust British.

StarlightLady · 30/03/2023 13:20

I think other cities need to follow Amsterdam's example. Let's make it clear people who behave in a certain way are not wanted and spoil it for others.

HowcanIgetoutofthisalive · 30/03/2023 13:22

I saw that. I immediately thought 'god how embarrassing'.

i don’t think anyone claimed the British are the only problem. Being the biggest problem isn’t the same as being the only one.

Tg2023 · 30/03/2023 13:35

@whumpthereitis No it's definitely us we are the problem (all the time) according to every other country in Europe! Just another British bashing thread. Don't know how it doesn't piss everyone off.
All the so called countries who don't want our tourism would be fucked without it!

I can assure you that quite a few other countries are rocking exactly the same victim complex whenever their shit gets highlighted.

VapeVamp12 · 30/03/2023 13:37

Tekkentime · 30/03/2023 08:27

The thing is, I for instance, would never go there. I would find it so seedy and I don't do drugs. There are so many other places for normal people to go to that they're going to attract those who are looking for sex and drugs.

When I was in my late teens I went for the cannabis. Now i'm in my 30's I've been a few times - you may smell weed occasionally but its an amazing city, arts, museums etc and pretty good shopping. I really love it and I don't smoke or anything like that.

Fifi1010 · 30/03/2023 13:39

It's well known Amsterdam has sex and drugs. Then they wonder why decent men aren't turning up 🤣🤣 shut down the brothels then they might see a change.

Choconut · 30/03/2023 13:41

It's just pointless really, like the people who go there for sex and drugs are going to stop because an ad asks them to.

Besides The Netherlands have far, far bigger problems that they need to tackle.

There is a huge problem with synthetic drugs being produced there - Dutch Minister of Justice and Security, Ferdinand Grapperhaus, publicly stated in 2020 that “The Netherlands is at risk of becoming a narco state." In Amsterdam Red light district businesses are part of criminal networks, money is laundered, some of the women are trafficked and there are drug cartels involved.

Trying to say Brits coming to Amsterdam for drugs and sex are their big problem is a just deflection. They need to clean their country up from the criminals that are making billions (apparently 16 billion a year 'washes around the country'in dodgy money).

The Netherlands really would be fine without the Brits gracing us with their presence.

We have no problems with tourists. Just the ones that misbehave. Tourism only accounts for 4.5% of Amsterdam GDP. The problem sector only for a part of that.

AlexiaR · 30/03/2023 13:55

But it’s not just in Amsterdam - wherever you go, you get these Brit yobs, behaving terribly. They are like Neanderthals. Those awful stags, and hen dos - behaving like entitled hooligans, loud, rude and very drunk, intimidating and disrespecting the locals. Lots of places are starting to crack down on this awful and embarrassing behaviour.

Ponoka7 · 30/03/2023 15:42

StarlightLady · 30/03/2023 13:20

I think other cities need to follow Amsterdam's example. Let's make it clear people who behave in a certain way are not wanted and spoil it for others.

A group recently did that at a hotel in knowsley, but when we say we don't want groups of young males who target schoolgirls, suddenly it's a race issue.

BitchBrigade · 30/03/2023 17:45

Love people specifically bringing up hen do's and stags, forgetting that it's not just young people. Some Families tend to be the better behaved, but then you start getting big groups getting on for 50's and 60's acting like utter cunts in the name of being the life and soul ruining family resorts. Stick to adult only resorts you mindless fucks.

The "Amsterdam shouldn't offer these things if they don't want issues with British fuckwits" smacks of blaming the women for wearing a short skirt. Amsterdam isn't "asking for it" offering these things just like a women isn't in the way she dresses. Maybe, just maybe, the village idiots of the UK needs to learn to behave better, rather than change a country because they can't damn well cope and lose their minds. Majority of nations can handle it just the way most men can get by not raping and molesting people.

For both of those issues, MEN are the biggest problem as fucking usual.

LindyLou2020 · 30/03/2023 18:01

I think there have been enough comments on here from PPs who can corroborate that drunken Brits abroad, (and in the UK as well), do seem to behave much worse than other nationalities.
But my first post asked........why is this?
Is it in our DNA?
Is it a "class" thing?
Do we have any sociologists or whatever on here who can explain this?

LlynTegid · 30/03/2023 18:01

Seems a reasonable campaign to me.

I've been many times, most recently to the Rijksmuseum and Oude Kirk for exhibitions. Went past some windows a few years ago on the way back from the Westerkerk and the women there looked miserable, so would not be surprised if they were trafficked or economically trapped.

LlynTegid · 30/03/2023 18:02

@LindyLou2020 the issues go back in my view to Oliver Cromwell and Queen Victoria and the society they created.

@LlynTegid

Ooh, that's interesting - seriously.
My knowledge of history of that era is woefully lacking.
Would you be willing to elaborate, and educate us.......(ok, me) then?

CocoFifi · 30/03/2023 18:30

As someone who lives in Europe, I have to say that Brits, in general, have a very bad reputation and I am frequently embarrassed to be British when I see the way many Brits behave. EU countries are realising the damage such behaviour is doing to their reputations, as it puts off other tourists off visiting

whumpthereitis · 30/03/2023 18:34

(Protestant) repression and the having to be so controlled on the homes shores that it goes out the window when in another country? See also the Germans.

there’s a similar issue with new money Russians and I do wonder if it is down to similar: being ‘freed’ after tight control.

I do notice it less in Catholic and Orthodox countries (ones with greater freedoms than the former Soviet states, at least) which generally don’t have an all or nothing approach, and thus are largely better at moderation.

that’s my theory based on anecdata anyway.

maddy68 · 30/03/2023 18:45

Yep. Brit's are horrific. I live in a holiday destination. It's always the brits that forget how to behave
It's so embarrassing
