My youngest sister is 15 weeks pregnant with her PFB and I find myself having to bite my tongue constantly with the nonsense she is spouting. All of a sudden she is a child rearing goddess after read half a parenting book, I really wish I could tell her to shut the fuck up and that I’ve managed to get my eldest child to 16 years old without her helpful hints. Her comments about how she would never feed her PFB junk food like I was preparing when I was cooking a quick dinner after activities last night nearly saw me commit murder with a spatula.

The meal in question was tacos, quick easy and nutritious I thought but the way she went on and on about junk and frozen/tinned vegetables being highly processed who knows maybe I am wrong and they are seen as junk? So Mumsnet was my quick Monday night dinner as unhealthy as she made out? We don’t get home until just gone 7:30pm on Mondays and I can get this to the table in 20ish minutes and it’s eaten without complaint by all 3 dc.

250g 5% mince beef
1 tin of kidney beans
1 tin of mixed beans
2 tins of tomatoes
frozen sweetcorn
frozen peppers
frozen sweet potato chunks
2 red onions
1 chilli
1 packet of taco seasoning
taco shells
Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, peppers, radishes, celery, grated carrot and spring onion.

I should add she managed 3 taco shells of the highly processed mix without complaint.

Op, make sure you keep an eye out for any Happy Meal toys in years to come - the great symbol of parental shame! 😂😂😂

@Dotjones

u ok Hun?

GordonsAFGirl · 28/03/2023 16:32

All complete nonsense re junk. I made everything, ditto my mum. Both DC healthy weight and they like a pizza or Maccy Ds.
We had no 'junk food' in the 1970s and both girls ended up in diet clubs.
By six months she'll be shoving those Hipp jars in her trolley😁
My teenagers friends who didn't have a once a month treat tend not to be able to leave the fast food joints alone.

santastolemycat · 28/03/2023 16:34

I hope her kid is the fussiest kid that ever lived!! And he/she eats a diet of chicken nuggets and chips till they’re 18 😂

Climbles · 28/03/2023 16:38

What does she eat generally? Does
she only eat organic, plant based food and considers read meat junk, or any non organic food?
The only thing I’d consider ultra processed in that meal is the tacos and maybe the seasoning but technically so is bread and pasta and any carbs, unless she thinks you should mill the flour yourself? Complete PFB madness and the precious one isn’t even born yet. Come back and give us more gems with the LO is born and she won’t let them be in the same room as a mars bar.

Tryingtoconceivenumber2 · 28/03/2023 16:41

Not junk, I follow a nutritionist called SR nutrition on Instagram she has various books out and she often does posts on quick meals using freezer and cupboard staples that are similar to what you have made x

Drfosters · 28/03/2023 16:42

Don’t worry, you can be smug when she’s giving her toddler crackers for tea as they won’t eat anything else. I always find it funny when people have all these wonderful perfect ideas about how they are going to raise their kids and don’t wonder why everyone else isn’t doing it!

Apologies @DotAndCarryOne2 , yes mix up with quote feature and meant to tag @Dotjones in both posts! Similar username 😁

No probs.🤣

DreamingofGinoclock · 28/03/2023 16:47

YDNBU ...I thought this would have been quick tea after activities...shoved some fish fingers in ...which would have been perfectly reasonable tea once a week and is a staple in this household (but can see how others may say no far too much processed stuff etc)

But your tea is far more nutritious/ balanced and I can't see how your sister could call it too processed

Once her PFB reaches the fussy stage I doubt she will be like she suggests 🤣

motherofqilins · 28/03/2023 16:50

I would say it's not junk food but it is treat food that I would try save for friday or the weekend and also try to limit these treat foods to once a week.

I do think she is being ridiculous and it is not the worst food in the world. If that is what works best for you and your schedule I would say just ignore her and know you are doing absolutely fine.

@Dotjones, you have got to be kidding!

I think so or someone with some very serious food issues who survives on mince and cucumber

@Dotjones

Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag junk, radishes junk, celery junk*

What the actual fuck?!?! So because green salad leaves are placed into a plastic bag they're suddenly "junk food"

And what the fuck makes you think Radishes and celery are junk food?!?!?!?!?' You do realise these are both plants don't you?!?!?!

But how come they are junk but cucumber and cherry tomatoes aren’t junk? Don’t they come in a bag too?
@Dotjones you’re going to have to come back and explain your reasoning, you psycho.

I would just keep saying “yeah we’ll see, speak to me in 5 years”

Of course her child will be eating junk and processed food etc, she just sounds like an armchair critic to me.

Until she actually becomes a parent she’ll never know what it entails.

Wait until her PFB is sitting in soggy soil trying to eat worms !!

ClaraThePigeon · 28/03/2023 16:54

Why is lean mince with beans and a lot of vegetables a treat food?

VWHoliday · 28/03/2023 16:54

Do you think @Dotjones has name changed and we will never see the name again?

Surely they have now realised that just because something is tinned, frozen or in a bag it is not junk food.

BlueBananaLlama · 28/03/2023 16:55

Write her comments down. Get them printed into a small booklet. Give it to her as a Xmas gift when the child is older and she's feeding it prawn cocktail Skips while sitting in front of Cbeebies.

Another comment that is baffling me.

Rinkydinkydoodle · 28/03/2023 16:56

I’d say that’s anything but junk food. Don’t sweat it, just remember this day, when she finds out parenthood isn’t a learning curve, it’s a fucking cannonball run. Ah the happy days of MTBness, when my kid was going to watch no more than an hour of TV a day, be an avid reader and adventurous eater (none out of three ain’t bad).

motherofqilins · 28/03/2023 16:56

@ClaraThePigeon the sauce and seasoning. I would prefer to avoid overly salted premade seasoning and sauces but I already did also say it is not the worst food.

Why is it treat food? Should they be on Gwynnie P’s 12 hr fast and bone broth lunch?

WeeOrcadian · 28/03/2023 17:06

You think she's bad now? Wait until said PFB arrives.

Hellno45 · 28/03/2023 17:07

Smile, nob and think about all the years of future meals you'll be able to take the pics out if her.

stayathomer · 28/03/2023 17:11

ah give her a break, we all did it op, and we all went back on absolutely everything we said we wouldn’t do!! (I used to silently judge people who gave cereal bars, popcorn or crisps in lunches, and assumed my children would only drink water and milk. You should see some of our lunches now!) Btw if she thinks that’s junk food my god we’re all fecked !!!

Mariposista · 28/03/2023 17:16

Your sister is a massive twat hahahaha
Can I come for dinner? Sounds delicious.

LeChatChat · 28/03/2023 17:16

Not junk food at all - a good mix of different colour veg in it also.

One thing I realised this week though - those taco seasoning sachets are absolutely jammed full of sugar, so be careful anyone on a weight loss plan. The Old El Paso one is about 50%!! We are going to make our own seasoning from now on.
