My youngest sister is 15 weeks pregnant with her PFB and I find myself having to bite my tongue constantly with the nonsense she is spouting. All of a sudden she is a child rearing goddess after read half a parenting book, I really wish I could tell her to shut the fuck up and that I’ve managed to get my eldest child to 16 years old without her helpful hints. Her comments about how she would never feed her PFB junk food like I was preparing when I was cooking a quick dinner after activities last night nearly saw me commit murder with a spatula.

The meal in question was tacos, quick easy and nutritious I thought but the way she went on and on about junk and frozen/tinned vegetables being highly processed who knows maybe I am wrong and they are seen as junk? So Mumsnet was my quick Monday night dinner as unhealthy as she made out? We don’t get home until just gone 7:30pm on Mondays and I can get this to the table in 20ish minutes and it’s eaten without complaint by all 3 dc.

250g 5% mince beef
1 tin of kidney beans
1 tin of mixed beans
2 tins of tomatoes
frozen sweetcorn
frozen peppers
frozen sweet potato chunks
2 red onions
1 chilli
1 packet of taco seasoning
taco shells
Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, peppers, radishes, celery, grated carrot and spring onion.

I should add she managed 3 taco shells of the highly processed mix without complaint.

I suspect @DotAndCarryOne2 is referring to foods that fall into the UPF category? But I’m sure she’ll correct me if I’m wrong?

Singularity82 · 28/03/2023 15:54

Apologies @DotAndCarryOne2 , yes mix up with quote feature and meant to tag @Dotjones in both posts! Similar username 😁

Crikeyalmighty · 28/03/2023 15:55

Sounds great- she will learn!! By the time baby is 5 months old she will think she is doing ok if she's served up pie, mash and beans before 8pm

LemonInaMug · 28/03/2023 15:56

I would just keep saying “yeah we’ll see, speak to me in 5 years”

Of course her child will be eating junk and processed food etc, she just sounds like an armchair critic to me.

Until she actually becomes a parent she’ll never know what it entails.

Just tell her this! Explain PFB syndrome, in as kindly and patronising a way as possible. It's the sisterly thing to do. If you point her towards Mumsnet she'll be serving rice crispies for breakfast in no time.

Elements of it are definitely junk food

250g 5% mince beef - not junk
1 tin of kidney beans - junk
1 tin of mixed beans - junk
2 tins of tomatoes - junk
frozen sweetcorn - junk
frozen peppers - junk
frozen sweet potato chunks - junk
2 red onions -not junk
1 chilli - junk
1 packet of taco seasoning -junk
taco shells -junk
Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag junk, cucumber not junk, cherry tomatoes not junk, peppers not junk, radishes junk, celery junk, grated carrot not junk and spring onion. not junk

The question therefore depends on your definition of "junk" food. Is a burger junk it it has salad in (mix of junk/non-junk elements) or do you consider it partly healthy? Likewise a pizza, is a cheese and tomato pizza junk because there's nothing healthy but a pepperoni one mixed?

At the end of the day, who cares though, if you like it, eat it.

Do you just make shit up to beat other women with?
You are so wrong I feel bad for your complete understanding of food.

Sounds perfect to me! Bite your tongue and await the perfect moment to remind her of her comments when the time comes 😉

I may be wrong, but I thought that in some cases frozen veg actually contains more nutrients because it's frozen quickly after harvesting?

You’re absolutely right about frozen veg

Mumtobabyhavoc · 28/03/2023 16:05

First: Clearly you are one of the super mums I aspire to be! 😀
I'm off tinned veg etc, but still use tinned beans. The meal sounds great! My only changes would be the taco seasoning and hard taco shells. The packet seasoning is likely too much salt etc. Easy to mix your own. I'd do taco bowls: all the toppings over wild and brown rice, or a soft tortillas. But really, mostly inconsequential. And I just don't like crispy taco shells and eat brown and wild rice blend a lot so I always have a container of prev cooked in the fridge. 🤷‍♀️

I get your sister... first baby, everything new, all the pressure to do things right etc. The rabbit hole of Instagram nurseries, BF/pressure to EBF, BLW, development milestones....it can create a lot of anxiety. 😱😬
Try to help her filter the important bits and reassure her a lot will come naturally. 💖

SchoolTripDrama · 28/03/2023 16:06

@Dotjones PLEASE explain to me in detail as to how on God's green EARTH frozen vegetables are even in the same postcode as 'junk' ?!?!

TellHimDirectlyInDetail · 28/03/2023 16:06

Don't bite your tongue. Tell her.

Pheebzbuffay · 28/03/2023 16:07

Gymnopedie · 28/03/2023 15:11

I don't know whether you're being sarcastic or whether you didn't do GCSE chemistry!

Joking in relation to the poster saying the meal wasn’t junk food but was very very high in sodium

WonderingWanda · 28/03/2023 16:08

Ah bless her. Just laugh and let her crack on op. Your tacos sound very healthy. When we have tacos my dd will only put cheese in hers ....I am a parenting failure!

I am sure I was once a smug twat who was never going to let their kids eat suger at some point before I had kids.

If she's really annoying just try a condescending "You'll learn" in her direction to shut her up.

AD1996 · 28/03/2023 16:08

My 15 month old was grown on McDonald’s, subway, Dr Pepper and pizza. He came at 39 weeks via C-Section absolutely fine lol

Strawberrydelight78 · 28/03/2023 16:10

Well it's not you never got it out the freezer straight in the oven without having to prepare anything.

Skodacool · 28/03/2023 16:11

@Dotjones, you have got to be kidding!

whattodo22222 · 28/03/2023 16:14

Not junk at all, sounds perfectly balanced and tasty. Just out of interest, what does she think passes as healthy?

SchoolTripDrama · 28/03/2023 16:15

@Dotjones

Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag junk, radishes junk, celery junk*

What the actual fuck?!?! So because green salad leaves are placed into a plastic bag they're suddenly "junk food"

And what the fuck makes you think Radishes and celery are junk food?!?!?!?!?' You do realise these are both plants don't you?!?!?!

Lotusflower16 · 28/03/2023 16:20

Wth is wrong with people nowadays? Everything is junk, snacks kill you, fruit is evil, frozen veggies are out to get us and so are the tinned ones.
OP your dinner sounds delicious. I have a chilli in my slowcooker atm and I can't wait for it to be ready!
Next time, tell her to bring her own food if she is not happy with yours!

PurBal · 28/03/2023 16:20

Just saving this recipe. Yum.

Workbabysleeprepeat · 28/03/2023 16:21

Oh op thank you for posting, the replies have really made me giggle. Your meal was really good, very healthy. And love the frozen chunk idea - stealing that!

VestaTilley · 28/03/2023 16:23

YANBU. To be honest, you’d be doing her a favour by telling her the truth- she knows nothing, yet. If she carries on spouting this nonsense she’ll alienate friends far and wide.

Also, if your food was junk why was she eating it? Next time she speaks out of turn give her what for.

Hobert · 28/03/2023 16:26

Why are radishes junk? And salad? I know Dot was trolling but I feel like I need an answer, even a made up one.

MrNook · 28/03/2023 16:27

Wait til her toddler only eats pizza and chocolate, she won't be so smug then.

I always thought my child would only play with wooden Montessori toys, wear organic clothes and eat lots of homemade healthy food. She lives off pesto pasta and yoghurt and has lots of noisy plastic toys 😆

KatherineJaneway · 28/03/2023 16:30

I reckon @Dotjones AKA @DotAndCarryOne2 has been on the Wine

DebussytoaDiscoBeat · 28/03/2023 16:30

Dotjones post - junk
This thread - not junk
