AIBU to think this dinner was not junk food?

My youngest sister is 15 weeks pregnant with her PFB and I find myself having to bite my tongue constantly with the nonsense she is spouting. All of a sudden she is a child rearing goddess after read half a parenting book, I really wish I could tell her to shut the fuck up and that I’ve managed to get my eldest child to 16 years old without her helpful hints. Her comments about how she would never feed her PFB junk food like I was preparing when I was cooking a quick dinner after activities last night nearly saw me commit murder with a spatula.

The meal in question was tacos, quick easy and nutritious I thought but the way she went on and on about junk and frozen/tinned vegetables being highly processed who knows maybe I am wrong and they are seen as junk? So Mumsnet was my quick Monday night dinner as unhealthy as she made out? We don’t get home until just gone 7:30pm on Mondays and I can get this to the table in 20ish minutes and it’s eaten without complaint by all 3 dc.

250g 5% mince beef
1 tin of kidney beans
1 tin of mixed beans
2 tins of tomatoes
frozen sweetcorn
frozen peppers
frozen sweet potato chunks
2 red onions
1 chilli
1 packet of taco seasoning
taco shells
Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, peppers, radishes, celery, grated carrot and spring onion.

I should add she managed 3 taco shells of the highly processed mix without complaint.

Oh you know what you need to do - hang tight, patience. Then you can delight in picking her up on sh*t food choices when her child has arrived.

stbrandonsboat · 28/03/2023 17:20

Ha ha remind her of this conversation when she's frantically getting McDonald's for junior after being up all night trying to get Sudocrem out of the cat/carpet/junior's ears 🫣

Bless her heart 😂

Bree82 · 28/03/2023 17:21

Doesn’t sound junk at all. Sounds great!!
also I remember Jamie Oliver saying something about how good frozen veg was because it is frozen at the perfect time when it is most nutritious!

Elements of it are definitely junk food

250g 5% mince beef - not junk
1 tin of kidney beans - junk
1 tin of mixed beans - junk
2 tins of tomatoes - junk
frozen sweetcorn - junk
frozen peppers - junk
frozen sweet potato chunks - junk
2 red onions -not junk
1 chilli - junk
1 packet of taco seasoning -junk
taco shells -junk
Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag junk, cucumber not junk, cherry tomatoes not junk, peppers not junk, radishes junk, celery junk, grated carrot not junk and spring onion. not junk

The question therefore depends on your definition of "junk" food. Is a burger junk it it has salad in (mix of junk/non-junk elements) or do you consider it partly healthy? Likewise a pizza, is a cheese and tomato pizza junk because there's nothing healthy but a pepperoni one mixed?

At the end of the day, who cares though, if you like it, eat it.

Hmm There's always one. Did you go through tossing a coin to decide whether each element was 'junk' or not?

LlamaFace19 · 28/03/2023 17:27

Haha I remember being like this when pregnant with my PFB. No 'junk' or sugar etc.... She's now four and as I type this she's eating her dinner.. Chicken kievs with potato waffles and beans 😂 I do cook from scratch too but some nights I just cannot be bothered. Your dinner sounds lovely!

motherofqilins · 28/03/2023 16:56

@ClaraThePigeon the sauce and seasoning. I would prefer to avoid overly salted premade seasoning and sauces but I already did also say it is not the worst food.

My god, another one. Between five or more people, I wonder how many grains of sugar and salt each person had? Treat food! A healthy home-made meal full of vegetables and beans! Get a grip.

pictoosh · 28/03/2023 17:30

Oh please tell her to fuck off.

YouJustDoYou · 28/03/2023 17:30

Now I'm craving tacos.

Crikeyalmighty · 28/03/2023 17:32

So far today I've seen Rice Krispies and tacos with mince and vegetables described as treat food best saved for weekends etc- WTF! No wonder so many middle class teens here in Bath swarming out KFC or Maccy Ds if their parents genuinely think these are treats- what the hell do they get fed!

@Dotjones come back and explain your tomfoolery!

Fladdermus · 28/03/2023 17:34

I think my mother in on this thread. Junk food is anything she doesn't like. So going by her definition:

250g 5% mince beef - not junk
1 tin of kidney beans - junk
1 tin of mixed beans - junk
2 tins of tomatoes - not junk
frozen sweetcorn - junk
frozen peppers - junk
frozen sweet potato chunks - junk
2 red onions - junk
1 chilli - junk
1 packet of taco seasoning - junk
taco shells -junk
Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag (junk), cucumber (not junk), cherry tomatoes (junk unless they came out of my dad's greenhouse), peppers (junk), radishes (not junk), celery (not junk), grated carrot (junk until cooked) and spring onion (not junk).

Some people are weird.

They just lick an apple and sniff some milk for breakfast .. that's enough, surely ?

yogaretreat · 28/03/2023 17:35

Did you ask her what she means by junk food? I'm very confused.

Zooeyzo · 28/03/2023 17:39

I have a sister like yours OP. We laugh about it now...by that I mean I laugh and remind her while she denies it and gets embarrassed.

MysteryBelle · 28/03/2023 17:42

Those are the healthiest tacos and side salad I have ever seen. Your sister is demented!

AlwaysANewUsername · 28/03/2023 17:42

Just smile and say "that's so interesting, thank you for your expertise".

Before I had my first baby I said / thought some really silly things including that I was completely against dummies, that it was easy for everyone to breastfeed and even that I wouldn't need a stair gate because I would just be constantly watching my child every second of every day. You can imagine how quickly I changed my mind ...

UrsulaBelle · 28/03/2023 17:54

I think she thought it was junk food because it tasted nice! I guess she thinks of non-junk as being a lettuce leaf wrapped around a stick of celery.

begoneday · 28/03/2023 17:56

FluffyUnionSocks · 28/03/2023 13:16

@discobrain Thank you she has turned into a twat and I’m struggling to be around her currently.

It won’t last. She’ll come to her senses once her darling baby turns into an annoying toddler.

justmewithmylifetoday · 28/03/2023 18:03

Sounds lovely, nutritious and plenty of veg. Don't know wtf her problem is tbh.

HuggingtheHRT · 28/03/2023 18:12

Ha! Everyone's an effing expert until they actually have kids! Wait til she's pleading desperately with an fussy toddler who refuses to eat anything other than chicken nuggets and Munch Bunch yogurts. See how holier-than-thou she feels then 😂😂

Of all the batshit crazy posts about food I've read here, this one takes the absolute biscuit - junk!!!

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 28/03/2023 18:15

To me, junk is highly processed, high fat and/or high sugar - high calories with limited nutritional value. That taco meal is probably the very definition of NOT junk. And I'm defenitely going to steal it!

letthemalldoone · 28/03/2023 18:15

Oh and @FluffyUnionSocks (my flabber was so ghasted by the above comment) - bide your time. The last laugh(s) will be yours!!!

As were mine when the baby that would never stick its well-disciplined fingers in any electrical appliances swung off a radiator and pulled it off the wall!!😂

Mumof2amazingasdkiddos · 28/03/2023 18:16

I'm not sure of the etiquette but I've screenshot your original post listing the ingredients and then your post saying how to make it, if I delete your username am I able to share the screenshot with a group of friends in a cooking WhatsApp group please?

In response that's a delicious meal (hence me screenshotting!) Bite your tongue and give it 6 months or so after the baby is born and you should have your not a twat normally sister back lol I used to be the perfect hypothetical parent and I cringe now at some of the well meaning advice I dished out before I had my 2 🙈

WalkingOnTheCracks · 28/03/2023 18:25

She's got into your head, hasn't she? You're posting a detailed recipe on MN, so that we can all pronounce judgement on it.

I mean, I read the whole thing, but then I backed up to this bit...
