AIBU to think this dinner was not junk food?

My youngest sister is 15 weeks pregnant with her PFB and I find myself having to bite my tongue constantly with the nonsense she is spouting. All of a sudden she is a child rearing goddess after read half a parenting book, I really wish I could tell her to shut the fuck up and that I’ve managed to get my eldest child to 16 years old without her helpful hints. Her comments about how she would never feed her PFB junk food like I was preparing when I was cooking a quick dinner after activities last night nearly saw me commit murder with a spatula.

The meal in question was tacos, quick easy and nutritious I thought but the way she went on and on about junk and frozen/tinned vegetables being highly processed who knows maybe I am wrong and they are seen as junk? So Mumsnet was my quick Monday night dinner as unhealthy as she made out? We don’t get home until just gone 7:30pm on Mondays and I can get this to the table in 20ish minutes and it’s eaten without complaint by all 3 dc.

250g 5% mince beef
1 tin of kidney beans
1 tin of mixed beans
2 tins of tomatoes
frozen sweetcorn
frozen peppers
frozen sweet potato chunks
2 red onions
1 chilli
1 packet of taco seasoning
taco shells
Each plate had a side salad on consisting of bistro salad leaves out a bag, cucumber, cherry tomatoes, peppers, radishes, celery, grated carrot and spring onion.

I should add she managed 3 taco shells of the highly processed mix without complaint.

She's got into your head, hasn't she? You're posting a detailed recipe on MN, so that we can all pronounce judgement on it, so that you can feel you're not the dreadful mother she's implying you are.

I mean, I read the whole thing, but then I backed up to this bit...

I really wish I could tell her to shut the fuck up

...and my advice is, 'Yeah, do that.'

maddiemookins16mum · 28/03/2023 18:29

Just bide your time…..grin and nod etc, you’re moment will come.

FluffyUnionSocks · 28/03/2023 18:34

@Mumof2amazingasdkiddos absolutely you might need to put a trigger warning on your post that this meal mostly contains junk!

Hahaha yes I will absolutely share it as a junk food recipe! Thank you 😊 I hope your sister calms down soon enough and realises she's being a bit daft, until then just smile and don't rise to it

Newestname002 · 28/03/2023 18:46

That meal is pretty well balanced nutritionally and, actually, I'd love to be eating it now! Beats the double chocolate muffin I've just eaten... 🌹

takealettermsjones · 28/03/2023 19:19

Smile, nob and think about all the years of future meals you'll be able to take the pics out if her

Smile and nob! 🤣🤣🤣

maryberryslayers · 28/03/2023 19:47

Ha, just nod and smile sweetly, in the knowledge you can remind her of this in 3 years time when she's feeding PFB chicken nuggets in the vain hope they'll eat something.

Lots of mums to be are like this, before they actually have their babies, most probably feel like fools when they look back.

Timetochangetheoil · 28/03/2023 21:03

Oh god like many others on this thread I was the perfect mother…before I gave birth!! You really don’t need to do anything just patiently wait, even just until she’s in the newborn phase or the thick of trying to establish a nap routine or anything... She will realise how challenging it all is probably in the first couple of weeks and realise what a numpty she’s been to judge you. If you want to be really mean you could say it doesn’t get easier 😂 I look back and remember my internal judgey thoughts about other parents and actually cringe. I was so clueless.

Side note…Tacos are one of our favourite family meals and something I can guarantee my 3 and 5 year old will 100% eat every last bit of…we love taco nights! They just really enjoy constructing their own, the endless cheese, salad flinging everywhere... I know it sounds sappy but when I was TTC I dreamt of sitting round a messy table with noisy kids sharing a meal like that and honestly some nights when I see them chattering away and tucking in I almost have to pinch myself because it is one aspect of parenting that is just how I imagined…simple joys ay!

On second thoughts, this is probably better advice than mine, which was to tell her to fuck off.

Copasetic · 29/03/2023 04:25

Ha ha. She is an idiot! My sister in law gave lots of advice when she was childless and had an idealistic view. We just laughed. The child she got tested all boundaries and she soon changed her tune. She'd have been happy to have just had him sat at the table eating, yet alone monitoring every mouthful!

OrderOfTheKookaburra · 29/03/2023 04:30

I've always thought Insta Mexican food like tacos gets a bad rap by being described as junk food. It's pretty healthy in the scheme of things (or it wound be if my 2 would add the salad and veggies... 🙄).

Your DSis is being a PITA and have my permission to note down all of her pearls of wisdom and present them back to her sometime during her DC's toddlerhood and watch her squirm with embarrassment.

WandaWonder · 29/03/2023 05:03

With people that dramatic I just go 'yeah it's junk food and I added turmeric which will turn your child into a Tory supporter when they grow up'

Or some other made up drivel

lala2023 · 29/03/2023 06:09

@motherofqilins

Treat food 😂😂😂

How very smug and middle class 😂😂😘

LuckySantangelo35 · 29/03/2023 13:05

motherofqilins · 28/03/2023 16:50

I would say it's not junk food but it is treat food that I would try save for friday or the weekend and also try to limit these treat foods to once a week.

I do think she is being ridiculous and it is not the worst food in the world. If that is what works best for you and your schedule I would say just ignore her and know you are doing absolutely fine.

@motherofqilins

what makes you think it’s a treat food that should be reserved for once a week?

God knows, but I’m telling you this…I wouldn’t want to eat midweek at her house.

lala2023 · 29/03/2023 18:01

@Antiquiteas I really enjoyed that comment !

TheEponymousGrub · 29/03/2023 18:11

BlueBananaLlama · 28/03/2023 16:55

Write her comments down. Get them printed into a small booklet. Give it to her as a Xmas gift when the child is older and she's feeding it prawn cocktail Skips while sitting in front of Cbeebies.

Brilliant! Do it, do it, do it!

Tessabelle74 · 29/03/2023 19:26

We are ALL perfect parents, until the kids actually arrive then we're all sucking dust off dummies and shoving chocolate at our kids to make them shut up! She'll learn 🤣

Madamum18 · 29/03/2023 19:33

Ok if you dont want to eat it make your own. And she can watch the rest of you tuck in!!!

5128gap · 29/03/2023 19:39

Can't believe all the damning with faint praise on here! 'It sounds fine' it's 'quite' healthy.
That meal has 8 portions of fruit and veg and I'd bet you a plate of doner meat, chips and a pork pie that it's healthier than 90% of people's Monday dinners. What on earth constitutes very healthy for the people who think that is only 'quite'?

QueenoftheFarts · 29/03/2023 19:41

Make a note in your diary to revisit this in a few years..... you will be able to rip into her when she's trying to function in the real world and cutting corners on coping with the pace of family life...

Once had someone pull a similar judgy move with my parenting of my teenagers..... who have turned out just fine, never an issue, just easy, nice kids and now well grounded adults.....but when theirs hit the teenage years 5 years later, they were absolutely feral.... how we laughed.... (behind their backs)....

wanttokickoffbutcant · 29/03/2023 19:50

I remember telling my friend my DD wouldn't watch kids TV......we were at Peppa Pig World by the time she was 18 months..........

Fluffmum · 29/03/2023 19:56

Ignore her.

Lovely13 · 29/03/2023 20:09

Frozen veg tends to keep more of its nutrition as it is frozen at time of harvest. Fresh veg when transported can lose some of its vitamins etc.

PleaseStopSayingHuBbY · 29/03/2023 20:19

I'd very happily eat your 'junk' for my tea. Sounds lovely.

Hopefully she'll be embarrassed when you both look back.
