To say you can still look okay at 13 stone?

I'm 13 stone 7... To my horror! I knew I'd put on a lot rapidly in a short space of time. I'm aware this actually makes me obese. And I need to lose weight for my health

I don't think I look huge though. Definitely not. Might say I'm a bit chubby at a push. Face doesn't look too fat

AIBU to say you can actually be obese and not realise because you don't look 'fat'?

I'm 5'3 so not tall

I'm the same height and the only time in my adult life I've been 9 stone is when I went through a traumatic experience and stopped eating for 6 months.

Same for the same reason. I went down to 8.10 and looked awful. I’m a pear shape - my boobs disappeared and you could see all my upper ribs. According to my mum I looked haggard. I look loads better carrying a bit more weight, about 10st works for me.

Plock · 26/03/2023 16:41

I have big boobs and when I lose weight they deflate and look like empty balloons 😅

ArianahX · 26/03/2023 16:47

I'm 5'4" & 14st, my weight is mainly on my boobs then my bum & some on my tum, my legs & arms are quite slim.
If I dress carefully I don't look 14st. My dress size ranges from 14 - 18 depending on the item & the shop.

Men still look at me like I'm attractive and I still feel attractive!

I know being this overweight is very unhealthy as I am pre diabetic, often short of breath on exertion (not attractive), and have weight related aches & pains.
I gained the weight thanks to the medications I'm on including anti psychotics which are notorious for weight gain making me constantly hungry but too fatigued to exercise. Also due to emotional overeating which is linked to my mental illness.

I know my best weight is 11st or preferably lower.
Im trying really hard to change my diet to a low carb, low sugar, low saturated fat protein rich diabetic friendly eating plan. Im also beginning to exercise more & I'm losing weight really slowly now.

But what I'm saying is, at my current weight I don't feel im unattractive.

Reinventinganna · 26/03/2023 16:47

That’s definitely a perk that I’m enjoying @Plock 😂

That's the downside of losing weight. I love how I look in my clothes and the shape of my face when I'm thinner, but I miss the lovely big boobs I have when I'm bigger - and the womanliness. I guess the best look for me is to be bang in the middle of what I think is my ideal weight and what I consider as overweight. Then I might get to keep the nicer boobs.

DedicatedFollowerOfFashion84 · 26/03/2023 23:15

The only other time I’ve been around 9st was full term pregnant…

Of course you can. But mumsnet is really weird about size and acts like anything over a 10 or 12 looks awful.

I think the problem is that some women think they look awful over a certain size, but other people don't see them that way.

This thread has made me think about how I see weight because I always see myself as being "bigger" when I am a certain weight, but someone on here asked the question "bigger than what?" It's as though we see being thin as a gold standard and anything different is of less value. I think this even though I can see with my own eyes that curvy women are every bit as beautiful as thin ones. I don't want to set women against each other, but I often think curvier women are far more attractive. I mean, Marilyn Monroe was at her most beautiful at a size 16.

It really helps that a lot of advertisers now use a range of body shapes to advertise fitness gear etc. It really makes a difference because it intervenes in the constant brainwashing that women have to be thin.

RedEyeBaby · 27/03/2023 19:52

Gosh yes I'm 12 stone 10 and I look so much worse than when I was 10 stone. I now have high blood pressure too and the stress of that isn't helping 🫠
I'm the world's slowest slimmer but I'm hoping to speed it up.

" I admire your confidence " just sounds so bitchy!

I don't think it sounds that bitchy. I weighed that much and was a lot taller and was def overweight. I've worked really hard to shed three stone and now clothes fit better. When I was 13 stone and a size 14/16 I kidder myself I looked fine. I didn't, I look much nicer now. It's been a slog mind.

Marilyn Monroe was never a size 16. Urban myth. Probably a modern 4 or 6.

Xrays · 27/03/2023 20:06

I’m 5ft 7 and 14.5 stone. Size 18 ish. And I would love to wake up tomorrow being a size 10 again as that’s what I spent most of my life being until I was diagnosed with lupus and other health issues which has meant steroids and lots of inactivity due to illness and the weight has piled on. I’m in a period of remission at the moment and doing a LOT of brisk walking and watching what I eat to try and bring it down again. I don’t think I look terrible but I felt sexier and more confident at a smaller size. But then I do remember feeling self conscious even then, and quite critical of my figure at a size 10 so maybe I’m just never happy! 🤷‍♀️😆🤦🏼‍♀️ I am under no illusions that I currently look pretty hefty. It takes more effort for me to look good at this size than it did when I was slimmer.

100% agree Marylin was not a size 16, she was not a modern size 4 though. Not in this world. Probably a size 8-10 in today's sizings - 12 to 14 when she was a bit bigger. Never a 4.

First pic of her here she would be about an 8-10 today, the second one a 12-14.

JaneFondue · 27/03/2023 20:33

I think those pics of her being a bit bigger are deceptive. She was tiny. Can't link now but her measurements are well documented. She had a 22 inch waist which is not a size 12. Maybe 8 then.

Which is why Kim K had to rip her dress to get into it.

Blossomtoes · 27/03/2023 20:42

Apparently her waist was 28” in They Like it Hot.

Blossomtoes · 27/03/2023 20:44

Some Like it Hot, even! Wtf can’t we have an edit button?

SecondhandMuck · 27/03/2023 20:48

the thing about Marilyn that makes her different from actresses today is how soft and jiggly her body was. you'd never see that these days in Hollywood.

JudgeRudy · 27/03/2023 20:55

Unless you are an athlete and very muscular, at 5ft 3 you are fat. That doesn't mean you don't look OK though. I used to think like you. Friends would also say 'you're not fat'. I think what they meant is you're not especially fat. The thing is I look pretty 'average' and visually compare well to people either the same weight, or similar age (mature)...that's because they're fat too.
What I actually want to say is "Yes, I am fat- just not as fat as you!" but I fear that would be socially unacceptable.
What's your plan?

StepAwayFromTheBiscuitJar · 27/03/2023 21:00

My partner is a little over 18 stone. He's 6'2 and built like a brick shithouse! Deadlifts about 280kg. It's mad that some women weigh almost as much as him. He's huge even for a bloke.

StepAwayFromTheBiscuitJar · 27/03/2023 21:01

Didn't mean that nastily! It just blows my mind as he dwarfs most people at 18 stone.

JudgeRudy · 27/03/2023 21:08

sayitaintsobow · 25/03/2023 19:35

@JaneFondue I have really strong legs which I'm almost adamant puts loads of extra lb on the scales but I don't think that's scientifically accurate

Just my delusion... but I do have huge calf muscles that must weigh a lot

You're a mesomorph. I am too. So strong and sturdy especially limbs. Bet you were a bit of a sprinter at school. You're right, you're limbs probably are pretty 'dense' which will push up your BMI. I bet also you've got a nice pert high bum, a hollow back and a small waist. Downside is prone to a bitbof a pot belly so even as a skinny kid it wasn't flat....if I'm right listen in.....
You're small waist, still looks great from the back but not quite so good from the front. Pot belly/mummy pauch? Boobs were little, but bigger now. As long as your boobs stick out further than your belly right? Do they still? What I'm trying to say is don't be complacent. You look well groomec (what we can see) but if you leave it, it'll creep up on you. Of course you might not give a fig if you put on a few pounds....but I think you do. 😉

Merangutan · 27/03/2023 21:17

I’m 5’5” and I know I definitely start to look worse as soon as I put on 5-6 pounds. That’s my own personal view. I lose waist and cheekbone definition, the cellulite starts to appear and my arms look flabby. I guess it depends on how you carry your weight and what you view as okay looking. If you feel good who cares if anyone else thinks differently? It’s the ideal attitude to have!

Yes she looks voluptuous in SLIH. A great film, by the way.

I suppose they say the screen makes people look larger. And it's true because often when you meet celebs in the flesh they are teeny tiny.
