To say you can still look okay at 13 stone?

I'm 13 stone 7... To my horror! I knew I'd put on a lot rapidly in a short space of time. I'm aware this actually makes me obese. And I need to lose weight for my health

I don't think I look huge though. Definitely not. Might say I'm a bit chubby at a push. Face doesn't look too fat

AIBU to say you can actually be obese and not realise because you don't look 'fat'?

I'm 5'3 so not tall

@ThereItIs1 spot on 👍 I totally agree with you (wish I could tell myself these things though) there are many women who I think are beautiful and not all of them are 'slim' their beauty is visible through their confidence/sense of contentment/humour/strength etc etc. I'm trying to lose weight just now but not to get the numbers on the scales down (I don't weigh myself) but to feel more confident and get fitter and stronger.

Vivfor60 · 26/03/2023 10:44

I am 5 '3" and 10 stone. I don't look particularly overweight, but I look bigger than I like. My perfect weight is about 9 stone 3. Am surprised WollyWinka considers themselves over weight at 9 stone, but everyone is different.

Mephisneon · 26/03/2023 10:47

Of course you can. But mumsnet is really weird about size and acts like anything over a 10 or 12 looks awful.

RatesWillRise · 26/03/2023 10:49

I think we all have a different ideal weight. The BMI ranges are large to cater for different builds.

My sisters and I have small builds. Towards the top end of her BMI one sister had terrible knee pains. The doctors said she had an op or lose weight. She chose to lose some eight the the knee issue vanished. So even at a ‘normal’ weight her body was not coping because of her frame. Yet stupid people here would preach ‘you are not medically overweight, blah blah’. When critiquing those are either end of the BMI spectrum some people lose the ability to think.

Argh, posted before checking for typos. Hopefully it makes sense.

Yes. My BMI is within the healthy range. Still been told to lose weight by my GP due to my ethnicity. I have no reason to doubt her. Small Asian frame, in my 50s. I wish I had made more of an effort in my 40s.

Exactly. The Asian bmis are:

Asian BMI (kg/m2) for adults
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 – 22.9 Normal weight
23 – 27.5 Overweight
Above 27.5 Obese

Fat distribution is different. We are not all the same so cannot say, ‘at x height I am y weight and I look/don’t look fat so you are wrong!

This thread is still going?
Why the weight obsessions?
I bet the ladies on here with serious illnesses are wishing that's all they had to worry about.

JaneFondue · 26/03/2023 11:21

Weight is linked to serious illnesses!

Vivfor60 · 26/03/2023 11:42

There is nothing wrong with caring about health, which is inextricably linked to weight. We may not like it, but it is true. Being a little overweight doesn't seem to affect health too much and may even be beneficial according to some studies, but staying a reasonable weight is one of the best things we can do for our health.

You can look groomed, stylish, sexy, polished, fun, attractive, voluptuous, strong, well dressed, relaxed or any other number of wonderful things with those stats - but it's highly unlikely you don't look overweight.

Hope all the perfect slim women feel better now they've told someone who says she's previously had anorexia that she needs to lose weight or is too big.

These competitive " I'm really slim" threads are so boring and unhealthy

They really are. I’d like to know where all these perfect slim women are when almost 2/3 of the population is overweight or obese using the BMI metric (and the evidence of my own eyes).

finalwhistle · 26/03/2023 12:11

I think I'm deluded as well as you OP. I'm same height and about 11st 7, genuinely when I look in the mirror I don't think I look huge but when someone takes a photo of me I'm horrified 🤷🏼‍♀️

I have this. I look absolutely fine in the mirror, but in all photos I look like a fat grey old lady

MrsHughesPinny · 26/03/2023 12:19

I’m a bit taller than you at 5’7 but I look my best around your weight. I like being curvy. Any lower and my boobs and bum start disappearing!

Oh! Just seen your pictures - I was wrong, you don't look overweight (but I was right on you looking attractive and stylish and wonderful!), you look great OP.

Cherryblossoms85 · 26/03/2023 12:21

I would be trying to lose that to keep healthy. High protein diets.

I’m 5”2, and currently edging towards 9st, usually around 8 1/2 but have gained due to medication. I’m definitely a bit “chubby” looking at 9st.

I’m exactly the same as you for exactly the same reason.

BananaPalm · 26/03/2023 13:03

JaneFondue · 25/03/2023 19:33

It's really odd. I am 5"7 and 11 stone, and I look more overweight than you. How is that possible?

My thinking exactly! I'm 5"7 and around 11.8 st but I do look significantly bigger than the OP. How????

I also look loads bigger!

Unless OP has that filter my friend has which makes her look slimmer - always a shock when you see her in RL!

For me, it's because I have unwisely decided to carry my weight on my tummy:)
Everyone who has posted looks better than me because their weight is spread evenly. I have a classic peri-menopausal apple shape.

Yeah me too. I don't look bad from the front but from the side I look vast.

finalwhistle · 26/03/2023 14:43

Having looked at your photo I don't think for one minute you're 13st 7, I suspect your scales are broken.

Plock · 26/03/2023 16:20

Reinventinganna · 26/03/2023 12:22

I’m exactly the same as you for exactly the same reason.

I'm the same height and the only time in my adult life I've been 9 stone is when I went through a traumatic experience and stopped eating for 6 months.

Reinventinganna · 26/03/2023 16:27

@Plock funny how we are all different. I went up to 9 stone after a traumatic event. The prescribed medication (along with EMDR) helped me to deal with the trauma but made me gain weight. I don’t really mind the weight gain, I see it as a side effect of recovery from PTSD.
